No Wrong Answers No Gold Stars
Liner Notes
#firstfruits #singersongwriter
I started this song Thursday for the Friday #songsidekicksongcircle hosted by @unknownbecky I got interrupted by figuring out that my furnace had gone causing a few faucets to explode. I sang the already written parts to myself while I cleaned up the flood, then finished writing it Sunday.
I like it when I write a song I need to hear. I want to keep playing with the order of the verses and questions like how often to repeat how much of the chorus.
I'll sing it this week at the Song Circle since it fits this week's prompt too "Descending Melody line" and at @zinglizh on-line singing group, and maybe I'll do another version in the class I'm taking with @jyoo on the basics of production....
Lyrics
Maybe there’s no wrong or right Maybe, it’s just us tonight Maybe Maybe
No wrong answers No gold stars Take another breath Wonder where we are No wrong answers No gold stars I don’t know how we got here But Honey, here we are
Maybe we’re the only ones Can’t believe what we’ve done Maybe Maybe
No wrong answers No gold stars Take another guess Wonder where we are
Maybe some nights nature calls Next day the ceiling falls Maybe Maybe
No wrong answers No gold stars Take another bet Wonder where we are
Maybe we’ll come right as rain Could it be birthing pain Maybe Maybe
No wrong answers No gold stars Take another step Wonder where we are
Maybe it’s not win or lose Just a chance for us to choose Maybe Maybe
No wrong answers No gold stars Take another breath Wonder where we are No wrong answers No gold stars I don’t know how we got here But Honey, here we are
Yeah maybe there’s no wrong or right Baby, it’s just us tonight Maybe Maybe

Aww, this is lovely! A really good message and presented in a beautiful way. I like all the little details in the verses ("next day the ceiling falls") and how the chorus ties them all together.
Such a cool title and motif. And the ringing maybe, maybe... very fitting for these uncertain times.
So classic! This has that beautiful simplicity that makes a song work better and better as it goes along. You are masterful at using repetition to create a sort of hooky hypnosis for the listener and no exception on this one. Lovely melody too, Nancy!
Oooh, the title line of this song is just so beautiful. For me it speaks to the messy complexities of adult human realtionships so poignantly. And the vocal melody in that chorus is so wonderful. Very nice work!
Lovely melody and lovely lyric. I can really only echo what has been said before and much better - this is really beautiful and thought provoking.
Sounds lovely. Feels like an evening wrapped in blankets after a hard day. I think things will be okay.
This is a fantastic hook/title, "No wrong answers No gold stars"! And you took this hook and spun a lovely song that has life lessons for us all! Pretty, heartfelt singing too! And in your liner notes you said "I like it when I write a song I need to hear". Yeah, and ya know what, you wrote a song I needed to hear too! So, thank you!
This is so lovely! The guitar is gorgeous & I love your vocals so much! The melody is perfect for the message. Beautiful lyrics, definitely something I needed to hear. I hope things are going better with the furnace and faucets! Really beautiful work that speaks right to the heart <3
This is beautiful. I love the way the lyric changes in the chorus "Take another breath / guess / bet / step" and the repeating "Maybe maybe" The innocence in your voice makes me feel like it's all going to be all right, no matter what else is going on. And I needed to hear that, too :)
at one point i found myself not even listening to the words, which in this case is a great thing. toward the middle i got sucked into this swirling rocking (like a baby) feeling. i would ascribe a lullaby like attitude to for it sure, one that just gently lulls me to a calmer place, and in my opinion that is the (gold) star here.
i got to listen to the live version at sidekick song circle and i will also say the production on this is great, i love sound of the guitar, everything really fits together nicely which is one reason i think the paragraph above got me. so looks like the production classes are paying dividends. not a surprise, as every song you write you outdo your last.
outside of that i do really love the theme. the opening line / no wrong no right, just us tonight. that one gets me, but i'm just a hopeless romantic, which i did think from that line the song was heading in more of that direction, but i do feel like there is more a hint of unrest here, which is really great to add that theme on top of this luring lullaby sound. kudos on a great song. also look at the great comments. glad everyone else agrees!
You voice is so pretty, as always! Great playing too. Nice accompaniment. Well done.
Wow, Nancy, this is beautiful! Love your vocals, and the simple, finger-picked accompaniment, Nice work!
The gentle accompaniment and soft vocals are a really nice complement to the ponderous lyrics. Sorry to read about your flood. That happened at our house too recently after setting our thermostat too low while we were out of town. It's a mess (and led to an expensive plumber visit). I hope everything is in good order now <3
I love the end of the chorus “I don’t know how we got here, but honey, here we are.” Such a great mantra for fawm and for life in general!
Such a beautiful song coming out of a bummer of a situation - a poignant slice of life. You sound awesome here - and I think the structure of the song, lyrically and musical, is right on just the way it is.
great title. lovely contemplative space, but light and open to what life brings, it has a lovely flow, being gently buffeted by lapping waves, just going with it. Lovely song Nancy
Great title for starters and then the words and melody live up to that high bar... I'm afraid it does deserve some gold stars... ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Love a song with repeated phrases with minor variations - to me it only enhances the homogenized themes throughout the song.
Lovely gentle melody and nice guitar tones too.
I love the way your guitar tones and vocal timbre complement each other. Plus this song is a brilliant reminder that simplicity and repetition can be very powerful. Maybe :).
Gorgeous melody, Nancy! The sentiment is beautiful too. And the repetition of ‘maybe’ works so well. Fab write.
Aw so lovely to hear your voice! It’s been way too long! I love your chorus. “Could all this be birthing pain” hit for me. Excited to check out more throughout FAWM!
Glad I got to hear it live yesterday, and again here. Such lovely flow in both vocals and guitar. The repeated lyrics make it pensive, almost meditative. Nice!!
I love it -- so much conveyed by "no wrong answers; no gold stars". I also I like "I don't now how we got here/but Honey here we are." And the whole feeling is nicely meditative. Lovely.
Very nice! All the maybes in the lyrics kind of tell a story on their own. Beautiful melody too.
Jeez--I've had flooding issues in the past and have worried about it with this last winter storm, but all seems okay. Lovely, lovely vocal on this terrific song! ❤️
Beautiful melody. It feels filled with longing. The simple lyrics convey such deep meaning. Really well done.
This is really lovely and I appreciate the maybes, the wondering, and the reassurance. One favorite line is "Maybe we’re the only ones/Can’t believe what we’ve done"
I see what you mean about writing a song you need to hear. The personal scale of this song is really beautiful. Well done.
lovely song Nancy, with great guitar and vocal. It's nice to hear that voice that's so familiar to me from collabs in past years. I've got a possible collab song I'll send you to have a listen to if you're interested. Loved it Nancy and listened a few times which is always a good sign.
I wish you blankets that do not mute your guitar.
Here we are, and it's kind of wonderful through the right lens.
Bummer about your furnace. Lovely song and a good reminder to be in the moment. Thanks!
Sorry to hear of the household problems, but glad you managed to keep this song in mind and then share it with your FAWM fans.
You get better year by year! I love how gentle and comforting you sing here! The whole song gives me comfort! The message is so right and important! Enjoyed this very much!
I love that gentle guitar, it's a perfect match for these wonderful words. I literally just wrote a song that says, "Here we are." Haven't recorded it yet, but it's so funny how the muse works within the community.
Love this!!! Great guitar playing and vocals!! Classic chord progressions and a sweet melody. Loved the chorus!!! No Wrong answers!! Welcome back to fawm!! (sorry about the furnace and pipes...trust me I can relate to frozen pipes!!!)
Beautiful performance and very soulful lyric. The guitar tone sounds so good and the vocals shine here. I love the use of 'gold stars' as a metaphor
Spot on! Lovely voice as always. It's encouraging to hear this as I struggle to find the value in lyrics today. Thanks Nancyhope you are doing well.
I absolutely love the contrast in the chorus of the simple "no wrong answers" and the poetic "no gold stars" . The prosody of word "gold" with the rising note is perfect. Well done.
your liner notes sound like something iris dement might say in introduction to a song, but the song itself makes me feeel like you are becoming a real new york songwriter (but with some refined southern soul). it is such a treat to follow you on your songwriting journey.
Really like this lyric "I don’t know how we got here, But Honey, here we are"! It's a sweet song. Cheers
Wise words. Love the non-judgement, just-be-here-now sentiment. I've missed being present for a lot of special moments because my mind was wandering away wondering what does this mean ? What's going to happen next ? The guitar is a nice earthy base for the lovely vocal melodies to dance over top. Big bummer about your furnace but I'm impressed that you didn't let it dampen your music-making!
A lot of great catharsis here. Hang in there.
This song has a solid melody that’s easy to hear. A substantial description is always good as a listner. Chorus is great..
Look forward to hearing it in singing class! I love: No wrong answers. No gold stars. Even though your song isn't about this, I always felt that in school the focus was always on getting the right answers and good grades and not about learning or being creative.
Pretty song, Nancy. The chorus is well shaped around the verses here and it has singalong potential. Welcome back!
"No wrong answers, no gold stars" - perfectly stated.
Very hypnotic, allowing my mind to ponder and explore. Very nice , steady guitar and vocals. Good job, Nancy!
Love that Maybe Maybe refrain. Such a tender and reflective feel to this. Fitting that it is a delicate guitar fingerpicking platform that your words float over…
