That Family Of Mine

Liner Notes
UPDATE! @grayland added some harmonies to the chorus for me! Any time Gary adds something to one of my songs it just gets way better! YeeHaw!
This song started life at my very first FAWM way back in 2013! It was pretty rough back then so I put it away for "some day" for a rewrite and new production. Well, I guess today's the day! New lyrics, new music, new production and engineering. And I am kinda dang happy with it now! Funny thing is, much of this is autobiographical! Grandma never died in the 'lectric chair but a lot of the rest is pretty close to reality! Don't judge me...I'm originally from Kentucky!

That Family Of Mine February 3, 2026 https://johnstaplesmusic.com/FAWM2026/JohnStaples-grayland-ThatFamilyOfMine.mp3
daddy was a sailor had a wild and troubled past served in South Korea got a tattoo on his ass
mama was a workin' girl way down in New Orleans wore her hair in a bee hive taught sunday school in jeans
that family of mine my family's so fine on Monday night we're guzzlin' booze on Tuesday we're all cryin' that family of mine
brother Bill's a preacher spreadin' gospel is his thing he loves to dance the Hoochie Koo and man old Bill can drink
sister Kate's a rounder she's a roller derby queen she was fightin' in the 1st grade got married at fourteen
that family of mine my family's so fine on Wednesday night we're burnin' bush on Thursday we're all fried that family of mine
grandma drove a truck 'til she was blinded in a fight shot a man in Reno just to watch him die
used to give me cigarettes and let us kids drink beer now she waits in prison for that old 'lectric chair
that family of mine my family's so fine on Friday night we're smokin' glass next day we're almost dyin' that family of mine
that family of mine my family's so fine you should come and visit son in case you think I'm lyin' that family of mine

Thanks persaab!
What an incredibly fun song. Great lyrics. Your family sound like they're a great hang. Best wishes to granny.
I was tapping my toes and bopping my head. Laughed at the tattoo lyric :) This is such a professional production. Great work, John!! I second @catmisgivings below. I'd love to meet someone someday from a functional family. LOL. As Tolstoy said, "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way".
Ah, family. Ever met someone from a "functional" family? Yeah, me neither!
Love your bluegrass tunes. The instruments mesh perfectly and your vocals fit this type of song like a glove. Classic John Staples song. Outstanding!
What a cast of characters! Every line is a total hoot! Love the harmonies, the fiddling, the whole production is top notch.
Oh, dang, John. The sweet specificity of teaching Sunday School in jeans just pulled me in and everything about the song kept me there. Some songs are worth waiting for. It feels like an invitation to write more verses about all our own families. And yes to Gary’s harmonies.
Oh my goodness, those added harmonies add such a beautiful lift!
Love the vibes and story in this song! Perfectly arranged too. Wonderful, thanks for the inspiration to write about my own family.
New harmonies in the chorus (chef’s kiss)!
I’m already jiggling - only just started - past ass great rhyme- I am in tears here - what a work of art. Love the little tone shift in family at the end of the section. Brilliant- who’s fiddling?

the BVs really add a lot - what was already a concrete solid tune gets a new edge - the soloing throughout is really great - I didn't notice the mandolin the first time round - even more super!
Fantastic traditional (but NEW0 bluegrass! The alternating lead instruments, and full selection of backing instruments - just great!

Oh yeah, that's a great down-home bluegrass harmony - I can imagine a whole bunch of voices joining in on these choruses!
That's a proper cowboy treatment. Makes me feel right at home, excellent work.

PERFECT addition! Love that
Now that’s some down home, good time stomping music. A fun song and great production. Excellent instrumentation… would have been absolutely perfect with a strong harmony on the ‘that family of mine’ in the chorus. Great job!

Okay, now this is one to be sung around a campfire (when the weather warms up, obviously!) Tight write and I had a smile on my face from start to finish. This one deserves a video now that you've finished it! :) Hey this could work for the Finish It! Challenge! 😃

Oh YES, loving the country tune! I grew up in South Georgia, and this is giving me flashbacks of some group jams I used to be a part of! Music and lyrics rock!

Pretty hard core country--I don't recall hearing that much of this from you in the past (whereas about half of what I do is country). Really a great song!! ❤️

I think you have every country trope possible in here! Some great playing and writing. Hate to be in your family though.

Think I saw your Grandmas face on a wanted poster here in Reno. This one is so much fun! I love the lyrics. You could be singing about my family too. Are we cousins?
Thanks Stacy! HA! Grandma always felt kinda unappreciated, unloved, unwanted. So, now she's wanted! And yes indeed, I think mayhaps we are cousins since Reno and Kentucky are not all that far apart, right?

Dude, one second in and I went, “hell ya!” Your banjo picking is off the chain, and the mandolin solo was 👌 chef’s kiss. All the elements come together beautifully and masterfully. By the end of the song I was singing harmonies with the chorus.
Thank you so much Artie! And HUGE thanks for adding my song to the recommended thread!

Loving this bluegrass jam!!!!! I’m a sucker for a fiddle, so that drew me in immediately. Love that you took the style of music that came from your home state to talk about your family, very fitting! Enjoyed hearing these lyrics, playful and fun. Great overall performance.

It's already stuck in my head and I'll be hummin it all frikkin day!! 😂 The lyric are just perfect!! So many awesome lines like "on Wednesday night we're burnin' bush on Thursday we're all fried" LOL!! And yepper I caught the Johnny Cash reference too!! Man I needed an upbeat funny song to start my day!! As usual your vocals are outa the park excellent!! I just can't think of anything about this tune that I don't love!! Thanks John!! Splendid job!! Ok now I'm gonna have to write a bluegrass tune too - I've been inspired by the best!!

Man, grandma was a badass. The production is really good. That fiddle especially and the mandolin chops are on point. A nice proper hoedown!

a little bit of kentucky coming down to nashville to remind them all what country music is all about. the best shitkickin music i have heard in a long time..and those lyrics dont miss a beat. i especially love the grandma verse with its nods to both johnny cash and bessie smith. if people in hony tonks still go wild, here is a song to jack up the wildness a few notches.

It needed to marinate and came out great indeed. Love love love the fiddle and mandolin. The lyrics, so many just made me snort…starting with picturing your dad’s ass tattoo right at the start 😂 Did grandma do everything leading up to the electric chair though?

How awesome to return to something 13 years later, I love that. Clever lyrics, and the music fits in perfectly. Sounds like you got some interesting family history in there!

Heh, no judgement, except that they sound fun! Great characters. I really like the setup, it's toe-tappingly good and the fiddle adds such satisfying country vibes. I could eat it up on a plate. The changing choruses also worked really well going through the days of the week.

Sold!! 😄
You should be proud. Sounding good and the lyrics is what had me stuck listening to the end.

Yes, even better. I realize a banjo is missing from my collection of string instruments. ;)
Such a family you got. My girlfriend love this. 😁 well she knows these family values better than I. Sounds perfect to me.
