I've Missed You Old Friend

by @johnstaples

Liner Notes

Started in around midnight local time and six hours later...I've got one! Writing a song under pressure is The Way! ๐Ÿ˜€

This one is inspired by my dear friend @grayland who I've known and loved almost my entire adult life!

I've Missed You Old Friend February 01, 2026 https://johnstaplesmusic.com/FAWM2026/JohnStaples-JohnStaples-IveMissedYouOldFriend.mp3

seems like only yesterday our future seemed to be so far away now I find myself surprised to say that tomorrow has become yesterday

I've missed you old friend and it sure is good to talk to you and hear your voice again

years flow by like a mountain stream we dared to hope, we dared to dream we once stood tall, now we lean with beautiful memories in between

I've missed you old friend and I'm so damn glad I've known you our friendship never ends

we played guitar and video games dusty marble in our eyes wandered through a winter paradise with Lucy in the sky climbed the Ivy institute and tamed the microwaves wrote the code and some ballads my friend we've had some glorious days

I've missed you old friend and it sure is good to talk to you and hear your voice again I've missed you old friend and I'm so damn glad I've known you our friendship never ends our friendship never ends

This song sounds like a warm hug. I am always so impressed by your production during FAWM! Such a lovely arrangement. I really like the harmonic movement during the chorus. ๐Ÿ˜Š

@aeye

Sounds great! Everything about this sounds super clean and just well produced. Great melodies, great flow. Nailed it!

@janeg

A song deserving of all the accolades. How lucky both of you are to have such a friend.

[pic]

Yay! Its always great to hear what you create during FAWM. Another great one. I love the mandolin.

[pic]

Really great start, John! Love the mandolin! Your voice is -- dare I say it? -- music to my ears.

[pic]

I like it a lot. Great subject, good rhymes, years flow by like a mountain stream! Well done!

[pic]

This is such a nicely arranged song. I love all the layers with the lightness of the mandolin against the continual movement of the guitar and the gorgeous push of the organ. What a beautiful sentiment - nice to feel some hope and joy on Feb. 1! Really great work! (and I agree pressure can be so helpful....)

[pic]

Loving almost every part of this classy arrangement, with special mentions for the organ and mandolin. โ€˜Dusty marble in our eyesโ€™ is a super line, and Iโ€™m a sucker for a Beatles reference. This is a great tune, John, top work!

[pic]

Excellent song, John! Also a perfect way to kick off the month. Wonderful sentiment. I loved the mando and instrumentation. Lush sounds. Great to hear your vocals again!

[pic]

Love this arrangement, the organ and mandolin were a treat! Lyrically, obviously very personal and affectionate. Friendship that long is precious and it was really well reflected in a warm hug of a song. Great opener!

[pic]

I'm a sucker for some friendship stories and you are a master of Americana. Great to hear your voice and music again! Really nice start, John.

[pic]

oh that organ opening had me straight off. the mandolin is lush and blends so well with the long organ chords. Love the friendship spotlight of this one John. How do you actually tame a Microwave? never mind, I think I will leave it to my imagination!

[pic]

Thank you, Celine!

[pic]

I'm keen to know what that organ sound is from - if you say 'a real organ' I'm going to wail and gnash my teeth,

[pic]

Oh, I've got one of those! I should use it on a song this February...

[pic]

What a beautiful nostalgic song! The emotiveness is strong here! I love your use of simple yet effective musical textures.

[pic]

Thank you, Clio!

[pic]

Lovely instrumentation, particularly the combination of mandolin and organ. Everything sounds warm and cozy, which matches the lyrics perfectly. What a great start!

[pic]

Thank you!

[pic]

So warm and inviting--and what a perfect song to start FAWM with. It's on-point without being on-the-nose, and is so welcoming and melodic. It really gets me excited for the coming month!

[pic]

Thank you, OG!

@mikeb

With that organ, give me a feeling of songs by 'The Band'. Great story, very touching, and hits close for me, as I met up with an old friend I hadn't seen in 49 years last September.

[pic]

Thanks, Mike!!

[pic]

What a wonderful, sentimental, human story!. I love the line, we once stood tall now we lean.

[pic]

Thank you, Sean!

[pic]

Beautiful sentiment of a song, John. Loved the instrumentation and your solid vocals. The lyrics are pretty great as well!

[pic]

Thank you, Matt!

[pic]

I guessed it was about FAWM before I started. Then I was less sure but in a fun way that made it a better song I guess. And enjoyed the toasty vocals from the start and the more-than-competent Americana guitar-driven but full sound. Soaring at the end hit particularly well.

[pic]

Thank you so much!

[pic]

This is so touching and just beautiful John!

[pic]

Thank you, my friend!

[pic]

The sprightly mandolin part is my most favorite thing about this song!

[pic]

Thank you!!

[pic]
@artie

Nicely done, John! Way to kick things off and show us how itโ€™s done. Inspired!

[pic]

Thanks, Artie!

[pic]

I love the mood of this song and of course, the sentiment. A great tribute to a true friend.

[pic]

Thank you, John!

[pic]

this is so beautiful and also really great vocals

[pic]

Thank you!

[pic]

I have missed those cool vocals! friendshio is something special and you've captured it hear well! I like the mando and nice use of the organ. Really good start

[pic]

Thanks John!

[pic]

love the dynamics in the arrangement, the steadiness of the banjo and the welcome entrance of the organ in just the right places. powerful singing on some heartfelt lyrics. very relateable. i have a couple friends like this. best friends from youth who i have a conversation with every few months.

[pic]

Thank you, Bill! I always appreciate your comments!

@sbs

Good to hear your voice again! What a wonderful testament to your friendship. Beautiful!

[pic]

Thank you!

[pic]

Beautiful sentiment, John, and one I can really empathise with right now. Musically, I especially enjoyed that melodic step-up in the chorus. It was unexpected but it works so well.

[pic]

Thank you!!

[pic]

Lovely heartfelt lyrics, off to a great start.

[pic]

Thank you!

[pic]

OMG I love this song so much!!! It hits me hard, chokes me up!! Those lyrics are phenomenal!!! The melody is already sticking in my head!!! Is this about Mark?? I only ask because of the reference to IVY tech... Beautifully crafted chorus.... Lyrics and melody.. Time passes so fast and the conflicts of yesteryear start to fade into the ether... Damn I love this song!!!!! Way to open FAWM and bring a tear to the eye of all of us who miss old friends so much! Thank you for this post!!! Ok gotta go back for another listen now.....

[pic]

Nah, not Mark, this one is dedicated to YOU!!! That bridge is stuff you and I did a loooong time ago!

[pic]

Holy Schnikeys!! the more I listen, the more awestruck I am with this composition. The more I read these lyrics the more I see the subtle references to the stuff you and I have done!! The marble factory!! OMG!!! The Yosemite reference!!! Remember the bear?? Learning electronics at IVY, using that knowledge at Avantek I am so humbled and filled with gratitude to have this wonderful gem. I love you man!! Thanks for being the best friend ever!!

[pic]

I'll never forget The Bear! Aragaki left salmon eggs in his backpack and nearly got us killed! Well, it felt like we were about to get killed! That friggin' bear was right there in our camp with nothin' but thin nylon tent material between us and him!

Do you recall the Lucy reference? That time, as I remember, it was just you and I wandering the Yosemite Valley floor. It was winter. We went everywhere. You tried to convince me to "wear" some moss on my head!

I love you, man!

[pic]

I did indeed get that Lucy reference!! What a memorable day in the valley!! I still have the pictures we took of pine cones and deer crap!! and the sign on the womens bathroom door "Warning, Bear Habitat" LOL..LMAO!! Only Lucy would make that kinda crazy!! I miss her sometimes!!

[pic]

I miss her too but I'd also be afraid of her these days! I'd love to see any pics of our adventures you'd wanna share sometime!

[pic]

Lovely arrangement and heart-felt singing. Great start John!

[pic]

Thanks Gordon!

[pic]

These are some gorgeous lyrics, John - I really like "dusty marble in our eyes" and "tamed the microwaves", for very different reasons. A beautiful celebration of friendship - it's so cool to see this kind of love celebrated in song. Happy FAWM!

[pic]

Thank you! We actually worked in a factory where we made cultured marble sinks and countertops and that crap was all over us!

[pic]

this is so lovely

[pic]

Thank you Rachelle!

[pic]

Lovely sentiment. The arrangement is spot on. The production is top notch as well. A beautiful start

[pic]

Thanks Matt!
