Dibble Dibble (Art for the people)

by @mace66

Liner Notes

So I was having this conversation about art - in particular the pretentious art of performance artists which (I think) can be absolute drivel - an example being a recent documentary I saw about a performance 'artist' who had done a stage show where he paid a woman to go centre stage and poo on the floor.

I may just be a philistine, but I really can't see the art in that and I think that anyone who can see art in it is also a pretentious moron.

That got me on to saying that if I did a 4 minute song with me just saying 'Dibble' over and over again and said it was 'experimental art', some idiot would probably love it...

Sadly - I'm not in it for the money, so I haven't done a 4 minute track of me just saying dibble....

For those interested in the gear used -

This was recorded on Cubase. The horn sounds are from the Cubase HaLion library. The drum sound is also from the Cubase library and played real time from a keyboard controller. Bass guitar was a Squier PJ bass that I swapped the pickups out for EMG active pickups. The guitars are a Epiphone SG and an Ovation Celebrity (DI'd into the DAW)

Lyrics

Strolling round Chelsea, With a handbag over your arm, Oh so nice to be , Born with wealth and charm, Oh yeah it's what gets you through the night - right, Whatever floats your boat baby.

Mixing in circles, Of an influential kind, Talking in riddles, Let the blind lead out the blind, Oh yeah it's what gets you through the night - right, Whatever floats your boat baby.

Peddling drivel, With the confidence of a saint, Let them eat cake, So they can't see that you can't paint, Oh yeah it's what gets you through the night - right, Whatever floats your boat baby.

Your lecturing nonsense, And they cling to every word, If only they listened, Then they'd know you're so absurd...

Oh yeah Dibble Dibble You say it's art for the people yeah... Oh yeah Dibble Dibble You say it's art for the people yeah...

They want you on prime time, They're so keen to hear your views It's good for the ego, To be making up the news Oh yeah it's what gets you through the night - right, Whatever floats your boat baby.

Take all the money, Well they're giving it all away, Oh so sure to be, Another perfect day, Oh yeah it's what gets you through the night - right, Whatever floats your boat baby.

Kill yourself laughing, As you deface another page, Tell the critics This is gonna be all the rage...

Oh yeah, Dibble Dibble, You say it's art for the people yeah... Oh yeah, Dibble Dibble, You say it's art for the people yeah...

Dreaming in colour, And you can't believe your luck What would those mugs think , If they knew you don't give a hoot!

Oh yeah, Dibble Dibble, You say it's art for the people yeah... Oh yeah, Dibble Dibble, You say it's art for the people yeah... Oh yeah, Dibble Dibble, You say it's art for the people yeah...

I loved the twist of give a hoot. This is such a jam! Great song all around.

I can totally picture this person strolling around Chelsea with that handbag. I was in Greenwich Village last year and I think I saw her there. I googled the price of the handbag: $4000. I digress. This is a funky, wicked good time. Dibble dibble is an anthem for our age (and one heck of a hook)!

Excellent production. The chorus is money. I can't put my finger on what era this sounds like it's from. But, it's good and I like the style.

Wonderful sound, there's lots of nice details, like the boxy snare, the faulty-car-ignition guitar strum, really nice tone on the vox (the double tracking comes across well, neatly wide), the Bill Nelson reference. Stage fouling is subjective: some folk like a deconstructed allegory of human existence.

WOW so thick and fat!

You make me think of Simon and Garfunkle, if they were harder.

The things I especially like about this is that you pay attention to the breaks, and you've got a call and response thing between you and the instruments. Those things both come from the same place, now that I think about it.

Lekker.

Pretty much every time I go to a museum I wonder who decides what hangs there and decide to go home and make something of my own. Your song is a nice reminder about how good it feels to get to decide for ourselves and make our own art. There’s a relaxedness that does feel like wandering around in the sunshine deciding what to look at.

Everything here is great. When I read the liner notes I was expecting it to be a song of you singing dibble dibble over and over haha. Glad you worked that into the chorus. I’m with you about performance art. I just don’t get it. (It was a big thing at my college years ago and it was weird)
