A SONG FOR THE WIND AND THE OPEN ROAD

by @jerrypettit

Liner Notes

Well...a one take vocal, and I think there's a little "dissonance" in the third chorus (my fingers must be getting fat), but IT'S NICE TO BE BACK!! Looking forward to hearing what everyone else is posting. And--I HOPE YOU ENJOY TODAY'S SONG!

Lyrics

A SONG FOR THE WIND AND THE OPEN ROAD

Words & Music By Jerry Pettit Facebook.com/JerryPettitMusic

You were born with compass eyes and wandering feet Never did you bow to walls or chains Maps were psalms you sang in your sleep Horizons called your name through sun and rain

I remember how you spoke of distant shores Of mountains wrapped in morning's golden veil You said, "The journey opens every door, And home is just a temporary tale"

CHORUS: So here's A SONG FOR THE WIND AND THE OPEN ROAD For the seeker who would not be still May the stars light the path where your spirit goes Over valley, over endless hill You are the wind, you are the open road Forever climbing, forever free In every gust and every mile that unfolds You're alive in the mystery

Your pockets held more stories than silver or gold Photographs of faces, foreign and kind You gathered moments, beautiful and bold Left footprints in the sands of time

Now the maps are folded, journey's veil has lifted But I feel you in the restless breeze In the way the autumn leaves are drifted In the whisper through the willow trees

The road goes on, the road goes on Beyond the veil of time and space Where pilgrims sing their endless song And wanderers find their resting place

So I'll celebrate the way you lived Not the moment that you left our sight Every sunrise is a gift you give Every highway stretching through the night

CHORUS: So here's A SONG FOR THE WIND AND THE OPEN ROAD For the seeker who would not be still May the stars light the path where your spirit goes Over valley, over endless hill You are the wind, you are the open road Forever climbing, forever free In every breath and every mile that unfolds You're alive in the mystery You're alive, you're alive, you're alive in me...

Oh I love how you gorgeous vocals just float over the lovely fingerstyle guitar - and such a beautiful melody. This song really celebrates the adventurous wanderer. Oh what a lovely change-up for your bridge - really pretty. It also just feels like a celebration of life. Great ending too!!

I like how the song ends..."you're alive, you're alive, you're alive in me". Very poignant. So many wonderful descriptions. I get great feeling of admiration for the "seeker" and respect for their "spirit." Beautifully delivered and sung!

I love the seeker hero narrative here, and your vocals are just gorgeous. Born with compass eyes is a terrific opening line.

That fast tempo surprised me. Made me think of the people who fly over our farm in their single seater flying machines. Or a driverless car. New ways to move across the planet. Welcome back!

i wonder how many of those seekers are still out there on the open road..or have they all retired into closed rooms and paranoia? i love the way the music rushes like the wind over hills and mountains. and i hope those open roads stay open for the seekers of the future, and that there is still something worth finding at the end of the road.

Classic folk/rock sound with lovely guitar and soft vocals! I like the way it transforms into a full-blown musical extravaganza. Lyrics top notch!

Compass eyes--what a great way to start! You definitely know how to produce memorable hooks. That chorus really takes off. I love the way this bounces along, and your distinctive voice is always a treat. Makes me want to take to the open road

Oh my I’m so glad to be hearing your music again. Your sense of melody and communication of the message is always so inspiring. Super cool style in this and you add so many lovely details! Fantastic!

Totally different lyrical style here. Music as well but not that distinctive Jerry vocal. A very full song

Wow, a bit different and so good! I just love the lyrics and your vocals! A winner!

Your voice sounds so great here, Jerry! Smooth and lovely. The lyrics are so thoughtful. It makes me feel free :) Beautiful write! What an amazing start this FAWM!

Awesome, Jerry! Some of your best lyrics ever. And I really enjoyed how you put it to that unexpected sort of Celtic rhythm guitar which drove things magnificently. And the one-take vocal sounded flawless to me.

Great lift in the chorus. Love this line “Your pockets held more stories than silver or gold”. Lyrically this may be one of my favorites of yours. It’s about priorities and you lay that out so poetically well. Really enjoyed this Jerry. Nice to listen to your songs again…

Cool picking pattern in the verse. This really has a sense of freedom and feeling of living on the wind. There is a little bit of weird effect on your vocal on the chorus but I didn't hear any dissonance. Good song.

Love the pumping energy in the chorus. Lots of great lines in here. "Maps were psalms you sang in your sleep" Loved this line a lot. Great song!

Such good lines such as 'Left footprints in the sands of time' and many others. Jerry...a magnificent song to start upon your FAWM open road with!

This makes me want to travel but I can't right now, Jerry. Yeah, it's FAWM, you know, so I have to stay home this month.

Strong melody that carries some very good lyrics. Nicely done.

Pretty song. I think "Horizons called your name through sun and rain" is an especially nice lyric. Welcome back to FAWM!
