One Ping Only
Liner Notes
I've had a stressful morning so I felt like doing a shouty #instrumental track. Can instrumentals be shouty? I reckon so. This all came about because I used the most "ping" like sound I have, the "Rubycon Psychedelic Piano" patch in Arturia's glorious Mellotron V emulation, as the first instrument I recorded. Guitars are my Squier Strat and Ibanez RG770. Bass is my JayDee Roadie II; synths are all Korg M3. Lots of #ProgressiveRock sensibilities, even if I've stuck to 4/4.
The #MovieQuote is from John McTiernan's gloriously preposterous 1990 romp, The Hunt For Red October.

Wow what an impressive feast of sounds. Everything feels powerful and in the pocket. Reminds me (particularly the keys?) of early Genesis. Love the title too. Can imagine the ever charismatic Mr Connery delivering it.
Listened three times. So good. I think I'll listen a fourth. Or should I listen in 11/8?
My favorite song of you !
Sounds great as usual. But I'm especially liking the tasteful grit on the guitar and the just right distortion in places. Melodic but hefty. Pretty epic ending, too.
Ooooh that mellotron emulation is just juicy as can be, then the guitars and synths come in layers adding order and richness. Fabulous!
Beautiful proggy goodness. It's definitely got me wanting to shout. Those tense dissonant build ups really give this such unique energy. Solid stuff here.
Great drum groove and that bass is most tasty. Solid song construction, moves along nicely. I jammed out to this one.
This is spectacular, love what youβre doing
And it does come across shouty in the best way
Very epic, love all the synth sounds! Nice changeup with the guitar lead taking over in the middle. Then the final speedup change grabs the ear that might have been drifting - only to end too soon!
A beyond powerful example of what one can do with enough practice. This piece has allowed for a much better day than expected, I suppose.
I like your drummer...and the rhythm generally. Synth lead around 1:20 comes in nicely. It all sounds very uplifting, probably from the rising melodic phrases.
One ping only pleash. Super cool inshtrumental. Kind of takesh you on a ride. The groove and bassh line shuck you in. Love the guitar and shynth harmsh. Great shtuff!
The guitar part that comes in a round 0:33 along with the organ are excellent. Nice instrumental with many wonderful sounds!
Well, that fit right in with the general bombast of most of McTiernan's work (which I mostly love, by the way). I too heard your song title as if it were read by Sean Connery (and, for what it's worth, your liner notes lead me down a bit of a rabbit hole - I had no idea that McTiernan had served time in federal prison for perjury; seems like a sordid tale that deserves further looking into). The Arturia emulations are gold and you used the Mellotron patch to perfection. As always, your guitar and bass sounds are money, and your synth playing is grand. Well done!
I remember liking The Hunt For Red October. So many old movies I want to revisit... Another terrific instrumental from you--I continue to be amazed! β€οΈ
Very chattery those instruments, I dare say! I listened a few times, as I usually miss all the little details and attention you put in your productions. Really nice one!
This one gets the foot tapping. A little Genesis flavour in there I feel, maybe in the guitars and synths? I like the super-fast drums. Amazing production quality, especially given that you created it all today! I bet this worked the morning stress out of your system!
First of all, digging this hard. It captures a vibe for me like multiple eras of Genesis synthesized into one.
ha- this is great! and somehow reminiscent of the themes of that movie (all the intrigue and chase stuff and spy vs spy)-- what a fun song, and what a perfect title (tho i kind of always heard it as 'one ping only, shaken, not stirred')
Indeed it can. Shouty and strong. Easy to be swept away in the dreamlike composition. Well played.
What hit me immediately here is your sense of melody. We've never chatted about musical history much. Have you had formal teaching, or has this developed through practice and your clearly execptional ear? Put it simply, I always hear notes in your music that I'm sure don't exist on any of my guitars... π€£ For a chap that was planning on having a bit of a quiet day, you've really rather excelled with this number. It's just top-notch πππ
I think the responsibility for my melodic approach to things can be laid unequivocally at the feet of a certain Mr Allan Holdsworth, although John's invocation of Rick Wakeman is bang on, too...
Stormy, strong and tight!
That ending reminded me of the film "Twister" when they're driving over the hilly terrain directly into the path of the tornado.
in answer to your question "yes" which is an apt answer as the track slaps off like a wakeman piece. Gee this really has a wakeman (solo) feel to it - very journey to the centre of the earth feel! That makes it a winner for me! it certainly is shouting out to me. Really love this !
The interplay between the shouty chugging guitars and the operatic synth's is really sweet.
Instrumentals can be shouted, but let's say this track moved with purpose. I liked the drums in particular, always feeling like there was a drummer in the room, not artificial loops. Great guitar playing and sounds π
Man, I always love the playing and the production on your tracks, and this is no exception! So good. I too have the Arturia Mellotron but I don't know that preset, I'm gonna have to check this out!! Nice guitar leads and everything else is just right too!
I 100% heard the title in Sean Connery's voice LOL Nice tune! I'm thinking that maybe for collab you'd like me to do vocals on one of your instrumentals or so? This has such great sounds!
That has groove. Love it.
Dare I say many of your instrumentals are shouty? There's something very bold and outspoken about them. This one has such a great groove to it, it's so propulsive. The synth builds are so good, and the guitar solos are so smooth. Gives me some Rush vibes. Love the way you strip it back before the final build. Great construction.
Shouting with instruments! Love it! Maybe it will catch onβ¦
Great vibe in this. I can hear hear and see Ramius in this music.
love it. Short instrumental but a really great instrumental. Great use of space in the mix.
Oooh, there is just such a tasty collection of tones here, across both the synths and guitars. Great tension in the chord builds. Ooooh, and harmony guitar leads! Now I need to change my shorts. π
This is super cool on lots of levels, I really dig it!
Entertainingly, I've sampled Sean Connery in my last tune, he must be in the ether. Just re-watched Red October a few weeks, it's so much fun. #iwouldliketohaveseenmontana
You thought about this arrangement beyond just A section, B section, etc; many layers to discover on multiple listens. That tympani roll (thunder?) going into the E minor section is spot on. The guitars after 2:15 remind me quite a lot of Andy Latimer's work with Camel (more people should know about that guy!). Sweet production.
