Whiplash

Liner Notes
Debs: I've lost track of the number of times I've gone to comment on a @kahlo2013 lyric and then gone "Oh crap, I hear it." Here's her lyric: https://fawm.org/songs/333837.
She was feeling rock or punk and so were the early commenters. I was feeling and went with this #acoustic / #bluesy thing because I wanted to do #wordpainting where the music does what the lyrics are saying and it felt more natural. You can catch this in the melody and also in the chords (they shift a lot, the positive lines have more major chords, the first chord of the chorus is a bit unexpected, etc.).
A true first take and also the first song written in my new place (maybe the previous owners were songwriters but I doubt it).
Thank you @kahlo2013 you are the best!
Liz says: @debs I love the heartfelt bluesy feel you brought the words to life with! You capture the angst of the sentiment so perfectly. And as always your gorgeous clear vocals and nuanced melodic phrasing across an amazing range make this song really sparkle. Thank you so much for sharing your musical magic with me! Much appreciated!
Lyrics
V1 you call my name you come to town you make me queen and then you take my crown
you lift me up and then you tear me down you float my boat and then let me drown….
C I’ve got… whiplash…. you come running in then you leave too fast…
I’ve got… whiplash… you throw me around like a highway crash…
V2 you want to stop you push to start you pull me in with that ol' Cupid’s dart
you want my love and then you take my heart you fill it up and then tear it apart…
C I’ve got… whiplash…. you come running in then you leave too fast…
I’ve got… whiplash… you throw me around like a highway crash…
B I need a doctor I need a brace… I need support I need more strength.. and I need you to stay away so far away cuz
C I’ve got… whiplash…. you come running in then you leave too fast…
I’ve got… whiplash… you throw me around like a highway crash…

Coooool mood. The melody feels so natural and free, especially with the vocal delivery. The imagery in the lyrics suits the bluesy vibe to me.
I love how the vocals dance on those high notes, so flexible and clear! It sounds great! The jazzy chords are lovely! The word “whiplash” has such a nice rhythmic out to it intrinsically, and it’s played out to great effect here in the song. Excellent collab!
Nothing like a collab with @kahlo2013. She's amazing! I love what you did. Very impressive to sing and play it in one take! Damn, your voice is f'n awesome. Well done!
Awe too kind, James, thank you. I’m so glad Debs brought my words to life so brilliantly!
The verses are just perfect bluesy stuff -- great vocals. You then move into a more jazzy feel for the chorus. Nice contrast. Very nice lyrics, too. Great collab!
Thanks Kevin! Debs has an incredible musical range of talents so it is always a treasure to have a collab with her.
Amazing collab. This is so solid and cohesive. Love it.
Thanks! Debs did an amazing job with the words!
This is so jazzy, I love the tune!! The lyrics by Liz were already really cool and I was actually considering doing my own pop punk vibe XD but honestly? This fits way better and does the lyrics more justice than I feel like I could've. Also I've never heard Deb's voice before and you have a really nice bluesy tone. I'll be listening to more of your songs for sure. Really cool collab @kahlo2013 and @debs :D
One of the best collabs of FAWM this year1 beautiful bluesy vocals, a great hook, and radio-ready lyrics.
I'm a massive fan of the words of @kahlo2013 and you've done a fantastic job on these lyrics...the bluesy style works so well and your voice and playing excel!
Great groove, great match of words to sounds. Great singing.
LOVE the lyrics .... you throw me around like a highway crash! And all the rest are great, too. Great vocal interpretation. Well done both!
Love the minimal instrumentation and prominent and lovely expressive vocals. A perfect pairing with these terrific lyrics. I feel like the vicissitudes of the vocals are like being thrown up and down from the crash too. Well done!
Nice and torch-y.
I love it when the lyrics set up a metaphor and stick with it all the way. Congratulations.
Yeah!
I always enjoy it when you go full on speakeasy diva @debs . The words are perfect for this groove.
You two play nicely together! Gosh, this one really stands out though. The lyrics and the musical performance are just so in sync, like a burger with fries and a drink.
Oh this works so well as a bluesy piece! Really gorgeous collab work, y'all!
Debs you’re such a natural, this song belongs in an after hours bar set with you singing with an almost asleep double bassist and cats being petted on questionable sofas by insomniacs. @kahlo2013 these lyrics are chef’s kiss.
