A dear friend recently went through one of the hardest seasons. Her young elementary-age child needed to be hospitalized as an inpatient for many days during a mental health crisis. My friend could not be there outside of official visiting hours. When she did get to visit, her child was often so sedated that all she could do was cradle and rock him like she did when he was a newborn.

The visual of a mother alone with her child in such crisis, being able to do nothing but sing a lullaby, watching the minutes tick down during visiting hours, nearing the need to depart, was so heart-wrenching. I tried to put myself in her place and imagined what I'd be singing, both to the child and to my friend. This is what I'd sing

Such a beautiful song about a crisis that so many have endured (more than should have to honestly). And all from the perspective of the mother whose child is going through it. I love the harmonies and instrumentation, and just really like this song.

This is gorgeously gentle, and all of the layers fit so beautifully. The repeated phrases in the verses are so effective - it just kind of drives the sentiment home and when someone is struggling I think you do kind of need to repeat things like that. Also, I love the harmonies and the cello is just so striking. Wonderful arrangement and composition!

That low cello is heartachingly soothing... I don't think that makes sense, but nonetheless..... This is so comforting and has a quiet strength. A lullaby tinged with sadness. That first line of the chorus is beautiful/perfect. Well, the whole thing is beautiful.

I am held rapt by the simple beauty of the music, especially the cello on the instrumental break and the subtle chord augmentations that are nearly invisible but alter the tenor of the melody in most effective ways. But above all there is the sad tenderness of the lyric and their delivery. i keep seeing in my minds eye the image that accompanied the line "Out of the Cradle Edlessly rockeing" from DW Griffith's "Intolerance."

Thanks for listening and for the kind words. These were hard emotions to work through, even harder of course for my friend, but I'm happy to say that they've left the hospital and are into new and more healthy rhythms now <3

This is lovely writing, composing and performance. Love how each line starts with a simple phrase, like "I'll be here" and the second phrase is a striking,, complex image like "if your mind has gone outside you." And the melody and harmonies are moving in themselves. Beautifully done!
