@greengrassgirl emailed me these criminally fun lyrics with the subject line "Are you up for a little bank robbery? 💰". How could I refuse?

As soon as the music was done, I knew there was only one man for the job of lead vocalist. One man with the gravitas, the gravelly voice and the gratuitously good guitar chops. Enter @richaaaay, who laid down a smokin' vocal and a lovely bit of lead guitar.

But even then, I knew it wasn't quite done. It needed another voice in the mix. Step forward @serene, who added that final touch of class to the show!

Hope you all enjoy the result. And... dammit, McGuire! What were you thinking?!

@greengrassgirl says: I had this idea for a bank robbery spoof, and who better than @davidtaro to pull off the heist! I sent him the lyrics and he said, "Leave it with me." Fast forward to this delightful multiple collab. @richaaaay with the perfect gravitas to star as the mastermind of this caper, and @serene providing the perfect vocal for our gang's moll. I'm sitting back and being totally entertained by this "How Not To Rob A Bank" tomfoolery. Thanks, all!

Lyrics

The money was the first thing, just for the record Then there was McGuire, he was the second The break-in went like clockwork, down to the wire We kept our wits and did our bit, except for McGuire

We knew that bloke was risky, couldn’t keep his trap shut Sure enough, he blabbed, and the plan blew a gasket McGuire told his girl about the Greyhound locker Too bad for us, that doll’s a plant, an undercover copper

McGuire, McGuire You’re dumb as a post What were you thinking You idiot moke Had to be a big shot Shoulda slit your throat McGuire, McGuire Game over, you’re toast

It coulda been our ticket, set us up forever But no, he had to risk it, trying to impress her The only thing that gives me hope, stuck here in prison I know how to defend myself, McGuire’s just a pigeon

McGuire, McGuire You’re dumb as a post What were you thinking You idiot moke Had to be a big shot Shoulda slit your throat McGuire, McGuire Game over, you’re toast

I’m not sure how I’ll do it, I’m working on a plot Gonna get even without getting caught McGuire knows I’m scheming and that’s worth a lot

McGuire, McGuire You’re dumb as a post What were you thinking You idiot moke Had to be a big shot Shoulda slit your throat McGuire, McGuire Game over, you’re toast

Oh, this is luscious. So smooth with this winning melody and vocals. And these lyrics - what fabulous storytelling. This made me smile throughout the whole song. I love everything about this song! Wonderful collaboration you guys! So well done!

[pic]

In a word, wow. Great song, great singing, Poor dumb McGuire.

[pic]

Somehow, I just loved, "Poor dumb McGuire!" Thanks, Mike!

[pic]

Yesssss
. Such a fantastic song! Fabulous noir story telling
such fun lyrics and the music is phenomenal! Love that vocal delivery!!! Kudos!

[pic]

This is superb - great storytelling in the lyrics, and superb performances all round. One tiny lyrical suggestion - instead of 'I know how to defend myself,' would the character say, 'I can look after myself'? McGuire is a great name for this character by the way.

[pic]

I love love love this - great lyrics from @greengrassgirl, amazing vocals from @richaaaay and @serene and incredible production from @davidtaro. You all nailed the noir vibe perfectly - such a pleasure to listen to!

[pic]

Very fun song! Great lyrics (I had to look up "moke") and excellent lead and background vocals and a superb slow swing of a melody.

[pic]

Let me know when the movie will be in the theatres! A great layering of parts adding up to brilliance. @greengrassgirl is one of my favorites, always brilliant lyrics, but a secret to her superpowers is who she selects to collaborate with. All of you helped build this into, perhaps my favorite FAWM production of the year... although, I have to say all of @greengrassgirl's collabs are in the running!

[pic]

Aaah! Thank you, Bob! Your very gracious comments have made my day!

[pic]

This is brilliant on so many levels! Excellent lyrics, superb gangster music and vocals, glorious harmonies. Poor McGuire, he sure did get suckered.

[pic]

Haa love this. So quirky and clever. You allotted the roles to everyone perfectly. Very underworld gangster vibe.

[pic]

Very cinematic...film noir with a swingin' soundtrack...plaudits to @davidtaro @serene @richaaaay and of course, @greengrassgirl 👏👏👏

[pic]

Thanks, Gwyn! Glad you got a kick out of our criminal collab! 😀 I thought the crew did a great job, even though poor McGuire looks like he may not make it out alive!

[pic]

This gives me the old-time detective show vibes, but in this case these characters are the bad guys. @richaaaay' voice is such a perfect fit. Serene's female vocals are an awesome compliment to the smoky feel. Amazing collab by all!

[pic]

Andrea, I agree with you that these "partners in crime" nailed the perfect vocals for this heist-gone-wrong. I sent the lyric to DavidTaro and he assembled the crew. I couldn't be more pleased! Thanks for letting us know you enjoyed it.

[pic]

What an awesome fatal four way! Yeah can hear Tom Waits but there’s also something of a deeper Donald Fagen in there too. Lovely addition of the female vocal, I just want to hit a jazz club now for a couple of whiskeys and some great music. The slinky vibe runs through all this, great keys and bassline and the idiot moke line is my favourite. This is what collabs are all about!

[pic]

@richaaaay When you were teaching Tom Waits how to sing, what album was he working on? So smoky...so cool. I love this.

[pic]

So classic and classy from a group of class acts! So good! Swinging you hep cats!

[pic]

Patty, you must have had the most fun writing this one. Simply brilliant story telling. David, you must had even more building up this pitch perfect arrangement. Props to the little wink on the piano at the very end. Richaaaay and Serene - what a brilliant performance from you both. So much fun - possibly too much fun for a Tuesday morning.

[pic]

This is so fun — have to agree on the waits/dr john thought but a little more blatantly self aware theatrical.

Damn, I love fawm.

[pic]

Oh my goodness! Quite the set of songwriters here. The feel of the music is glorious, and I love how we get dropped into the story and are hearing about the problems as we go along. So atmospheric throughout! Waiting for the sequel from our narrator who is "Gonna get even without getting caught."

[pic]

Holy smoking jazz joints - this is AMAZING!!!! I smiled all the way through my first listen and went straight in for a second. Great storytelling in the lyrics from GGG, some inspired musical vision, composing and directorship from David, and omg the perfect vocal performances by Rich and Serene!! this is such a vibe - Thank god McGuire is toast!

[pic]

Oh hey coolest of cool jazz! This trumpet player appreciates those beautiful brass bits and hits! The storytelling here is so on point and you had me laughing over and over again with the roasting. I just saw The Godfather #1 movie played with a live orchestra doing the soundtrack, and this is a nice followup to that sort of mafioso crime spree vibe!

[pic]

What a fun listen to start my day! Y'all combine talents to deliver this perfectly, lazily Tom Waits, patiently Dr. John.

[pic]

Perfect fit for a perfect band. I absolutely get why you wanted Rich doing the vocals, Serene the backing vocals and jam on David Taro's composition that is based on Patty's lyrics. I had so much fun, and thanks for the download

[pic]

Richaaaay, your voice is sooooo perfect for this! You guys! AHHHHH! This is so insanely amazing, those harmonies, all the instrumentation is just so fantastical and magical! BRILLIANT!

[pic]

Hi, froggy, so glad you took the time to listen and comment on our 4-way collab. It was David's imagination that brought it all together. I'm still chuckling.

[pic]

The vocal is fantastic ... it fits the character sketch and bar-room jazz vibe perfectly ... reminds me of Romeo is Bleeding by Tom Waits. The musical production quality is outrageously good... the brass, the guitars, the drums, the Hammond organ... it makes for a totally immersive experience. One of those collaborations where it all clicks into place. Brilliant.

[pic]

great sounding song all round, Richaaaay's vocal is so good, and when Serene comes in it just radiates the glossy side of that world, beautiful voice as ever sounding silky smooth with David's production, and what an arrangement.. Puts the whole grisly plan firmly under the West End/Broadway lights. haha just imagining a round of applause at the end, but then i have no subtlety, unlike you guys who pulled a beauty out of the (swag) bag. (Maybe not full on west end, but that sort of thing, even if in film maybe, I'm trying to say Framed - like McGuire)

[pic]
@sbs

Classic @richaaaay and the gang! This is what FAWM is about! So fun!

[pic]

This is amazing and totally unexpected. @richaaaay was absolutely the best voice for this 40's film noire type of song. Every other part, lyrics, instrumentation, backing vocals, all is perfectly place. Nice job gang!

[pic]

Huh, “Moke”

We have a different slang word in America, “mook,” that’s used in a lot of old gangster movies, and the words are unrelated.

Lead guitar was fantastic. Take that, McGuire!

[pic]

So glad you got a kick out of our multi-collab. Re: "moke" here's what my research told me, so that's what I went with:

The origin of the term Moke is somewhat unclear, but it is believed to have originated in the United States during the 1960s. At that time, the term was used to describe a person who was seen as being a bit of a loser or a misfit. Over time, the term evolved and began to be used more broadly to describe anyone who was considered to be uncool or unpopular.

[pic]

ooh this so has the vibe!, smoky jazz joint! Late night piano. Casablanca

[pic]

Yep! Exactly what I had hoped, and @dtaro knew exactly the crew to bring in: @richaaaay and @serene to pull off the job. Fortunately, they were all smarter than McGuire!

[pic]

an excellent variation on the classic Saint James Infirmary model.. richaaaay inhabits patty's lyrics like a film noir star, bringing the story to cinematic life. love the trumpet bit and the many other touches of class david brings to the arrangement, and bringing serene in for a second vocal on the chorus was a masterstroke.

[pic]

As you know, it was @dtaro who put all the parts together, and doesn't he do a great job! Your comment sent me to Youtube to listen to Louis Amstrong's song. Never heard it before, so thank you for that, too.

[pic]

Wow! I never knew a ménage à quatre could be such fun. Great presentation (and representation) of character and music to be envious of.

[pic]

Thats some trio off the back of Patti excellent lyrics. What a good selection perfect choices, Richaaay up that the voice and Serene perfect against it! Top class all round. yup a bit moocherish well teh catchy bit!

[pic]

This is on the level of "Minnie The Moocher" and "Smuggler's Blues." This is such a fun song and an amazing effort from everyone. The horns are fantastic. The brush drums. The upright bass. The guitar solo. It all serves the song to create an absolute smoky, noir vibe.

[pic]

Thanks @jamesstaubes. It's good to hear the things you particularly liked about the song. Thanks! @davidtaro was our ringleader, putting all the pieces together. Glad you enjoyed it.
