Rough Winter?

Liner Notes
ductapeguy sez: Our annual zoom collab. I suggested a Donny and Marie kind of Little bit country, little bit rock and roll dialogue. Carley suggested winter (or her lack of it) and we were off. We brainstormed ideas and co-wrote verses and song structure on a shared google doc in real time, 5000km apart. We are living in the future.
carleybaer says: I love writing with Sean because it’s always my two favorite things: fun and easy. And we usually get a pretty good tune out of it! Thanks for the conversation and the laughs and the absolute ease of process. A highlight of my FAWM every year.
Lyrics
80bpm
Sean Looking like another hard winter Snowbanks piled past my ears. Every street a blind corridor Hope the roof holds up this year
Carley I keep waiting for winter It’s coming, that’s what they say But when I look out the window It’s another dry and sunny day
Chorus Both Winter winter can be rough Sometimes you get plenty sometimes not enough Winter winter makes you tough Unless you don’t get any Or too much of the stuff
Carley The trees and buds are blooming And it seems strange to me To go outside and get a sunburn In the middle of February
Sean Looks like another squall is blowing in Salt from the roads gets everywhere Not to belabour a point Salt from the roads gets everywhere
Chorus Both Winter winter can be rough Sometimes you get plenty sometimes not enough Winter winter makes you tough Unless you don’t get any Or too much of the stuff
Bridge Time for us to get on a plane Get under the sun, or even the rain If there’s no need to shovel I won’t complain
Chorus Both x2 Winter winter can be rough Sometimes you get plenty sometimes not enough Winter winter makes you tough Unless you don’t get any Or too much of the stuff

What a great collaboration! This goes down easy, much easier than an Ontario winter, that’s for certain.
Oh, what a fun way to collaborate. You should "record" the zoom conference and post it on YouTube. I would definitely watch it! You guys really did a great job on this one! ❤️
Really enjoyed reading the description of your collab process, that back and forth definitely shows in the cohesion of the final song. Love the minor to major, verse to chorus. And that chorus melody is a real winner, made particularly wonderful by the harmonies. The lines about getting sunburn in February, and the salt getting everywhere are excellent. A great listen, well done both :)
Great showing of the contrast in the lyrics! Fun bi-coastal collab! I've 'had enough' here this winter.
Sounds like winter where I live. (At least sean's part) This is a very nice duet! The contrast is cool and then yall come together great on the chorus. Simple yet a cool comforting melody. Great work you too.
That line "Sometimes you get plenty, sometimes not enough" is the heart of this. As a Brit, living somewhere in the middle of your extremes (it's just cold and wet here for most of the winter) I feel jealous. I'm just not sure about which of you I'm jealous of...
Great harmonies!
Winter is too long either way. It seems like winter takes up more of the calendar days than spring or fall. That must have been a fun afternoon together, online.
Very nice collab! I understand the sentiment… I remember living in CA and not getting enough of the winter…and then sometimes here in WI it will literally break me with its dark depression. But hey we had a sunny 60 degree day yesterday so I’m recharged. Anyways, I loved the harmonized part at the end, your voices blend well and it was lovely!
Oh wow, this is a lovely collab! I, too, know the feeling of getting a sunburn in February! I love how the lyrics tell two sides of the winter story in this tune, also love the harmonizing in the chorus :)
The duet aspect is really well delivered, with lovely contrasts in your vocals in the verses and harmonies in the chorus. Winter / not-winter seems like a pretty potent comparison. Working in B minor -- a rare choice for guitar-based chords? -- works really well, too.
