Liner Notes

Today's #MovieQuote is John Rhys-Davies's immortal line from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) spoken after Gimli watches Legolas take down an Oliphant and all its riders, all by himself, and then—in the most outrageous shot of the entire trilogy—surf casually down its trunk.

And as we're on the subject of counting, this #oddtimesignature composition is in 7/8 and therefore thoroughly embraces my #prog sensibilities. Which means it's #ChapmanStick time again. I may have got a teensy bit carried away, because the number of tracks of #guitar (my Parker Fly) is well into double figures here and then I kept saying to myself, "Yeah, that's done" before adding another couple of tracks on the Korg M3...

Nice structure with the drums keeping everything on rack while the melodic bits get to play. The count OUT was definitely clever.

Oh yes! I remember NOT playing your Chapman Stick when we met at Wobbie's "do", knowing that if I laid hands on it I'd want one. 😀 And now, listening to this track, I want one even more! This is fantastic Chris! I love the whole composition and production. The instrument choices, voicings, and dynamics are perfect. But I would have expected nothing less. But above all, it's the sheer musicality of the piece that has had me enthralled. Simply lovely mate. 😄

It’s always so fun to listen to what you do with all those mad musicals skills you possess. The odd time works wonderfully here. What an epic composition….I like the count to seven outro…

[pic]

Oooh I like the jazzy feel of this. Really cool. I would never know where to start with 7/8 time.

[pic]

Great drum sound, groove and overall recording. A blank page for the listener to imagine a story. Good work, laden with emotion !

[pic]

I like the groove, but the translation at 2:00 really sold me

Another fan of the 7/8 groove here, lovely to see you doing it so darned well in the services of Tolkien inspired instrumental prog (I mean what else would you use it for???). The Chapman sounds so bloody lovely and huge here, allowing you to hang all the other (many) guitar textures off it. Really clever to echo the count-in on the guitars later on in the piece too.

This an absolute pleasure to just sit back and enjoy.

@sirius

Yay, that 7/8 groove is really perfect. I picture the scene in the movie with that track playing, how great that would be! The production is amazing, as always ( it takes at least two listens to notice every detail). Both the weight of the Oliphant and the nimbleness of the Elf are there. However, 'because the number of tracks [...] is well into double figures' : That still only counts as one!!!

You’ve definitely nailed a groove with 7/8, which isn’t exactly easy to pull off. You just grab the attention and take us on a trip! Great song!

That surfing shot from the movie is hilarious as is the quote you used as the inspiration for this song. The song itself is really something. Your mastery of odd time signatures is impressive, and this song showcases it well. It also showcases your engineering prowess - this tune is definitely ready to go right on your next album. You've managed to successfully corral way more tracks onto a FAWM song than anyone has a right to. I also appreciate your vocals on this. For those of us (myself definitely included) who struggle to count odd time signatures, it was a much-appreciated flotation device. Oh and did I forget to say that your composition here was beautiful? It was.

[pic]

Love the Stick! I have an off brand touch style, but I suck at it. This instrumental takes you places. It's secret agent movie soundtrack material for sure. Great playing throughout. Love it!

[pic]

The time signature makes this somehow.. addictive. Maybe it's taking me a bit further in time than 2003. You make the amount of guitar tracks sound so effortless! I just love how much stuff there's going on at once. The bass tone is really cool, too.

[pic]

Sounds epic. Your count in at the beginning helped me lock into the time signature. Very Prog indeed. You’ve even got the wandering flutey bit and the Hammond organ chords! A one man supergroup. Great stuff.

[pic]

Very memorable scene in the movie. Nice track. Hard for me to lock in to the 7/8, but doesn't mess up the groove for me. Sounds good but I like guitars.

[pic]

I now think I sent you the wrong thing. Clearly you are in a proggy mood this FAWM :-)

[pic]

I remember it well - the interactions between those 2 was always a highlight. &/8 hm sounds good very proggy all through! a song i would have put on late at night with the mates as we played various games! A lot of layers in here!

[pic]

I recognized the quote right away, of course, so had to listen! The 7/8 time signature is hard to wrap your head around, in some passages its subtle, and in others, quite disquieting. Love all the tracks!

[pic]

Came for the quote. Stayed for the music. I would love to be able to make odd time signatures work with such ease.

[pic]

Lots of tracks, but so... much... space... This sounds as much like a real band wigging out and thoroughly enjoying themselves as anything on FAWM possibly could.

[pic]

Such a cool number. Fantastically executed and I gave up trying to count the number of layered tracks. 7/8 tempo is genius.

[pic]

More catchy, even danceable than 7/8 ought to be. Great stuff Chris.

[pic]

Perfection once again--love your instrumentals and will never tire of them! ❤️

[pic]

Time sig is fire for the vibe! I love the guitar solo in the second section; it has the perfect amount of fuzz. The organ is very tasty with the harmonized guitar, and I appreciated those guitars coming back several more times 🎸

[pic]

So well executed, amazingly detailed work with the drums. The 7/8 gives it an extra "always evolving" quality I think, like the song is sort of floating while still having a clear structure. I love the wall of guitar-sound, very thick and lush!

@dannen

7/8!?! Good way to challenge yourself. Had my head nodding to the rhythm. I was introduced to the Chapman Stick when we were in Hawaii. Very cool instrument.

[pic]

Why does 7/8 feels so nice when you play it? For me its one of the hardest signatures that feels like stumbling. And these guitar and synth sounds are awesome

[pic]

you make that 7/8 thing sound so easy and natural. Great composition, great arrangement and great playing, as always-- and this really hits on all cylinders. (a seven cylinder car with eight carburetors? well, you get the idea)

[pic]

awesome. doesn't even feel like 7/8. flows so nicely. great bass-line, and quote as well! very Tool-like to keep adding those guitars. love that organ around 2:15, so mellow and chill over those guitar riffs. little bit of Queen with those leads towards the end (and the drums at the end too). very nice. kudos!
