Liner Notes

A #ukulele #folk tribute of sorts to the entertainers in pubs on Friday and Saturday night and the buskers. They've got their guitars and their hits, and I've got my ukulele, but many of them I know would rather be elsewhere singing their own songs, even if this is where the money is.

You want Wonderwall or Wagon Wheel, well, this is Wonderwall and Wagon Wheel, so it must be twice as good. #fuc

Lyrics

Midnight is a memory, light is growing dim Another ball of paper that you're lobbing in the bin A sip of lukewarm coffee can't eliminate the doubt The page has little space for all the words you're crossing out

Find the perfect harmony and sing a soft refrain Accompanied by the wind and by the rhythm of the rain Check the final verses of the forty seventh draft Will it make them cry or can you try to make them laugh

When you get your things together, head out to the bar Set up the microphones and plug in your guitar But you know what they all came for and that is why you are Singing Wonderwall and Wagon Wheel again

Need another syllable to end the second line Wonder if it matters if it's not a perfect rhyme Does it need harmonica, a flute or violin Ending on the tonic, with perhaps a little gin

Then get your things together, head out to the bar Set up the microphones and plug in your guitar But you know what they all came for and that is why you are Singing Wonderwall and Wagon Wheel again

Keep the candle burning, communing with the muse Changing, rearranging, bending breaking rules But the party's getting started and so what is there to lose By singing Wonderwall and Wagon Wheel again

And you've got so many stories that you're desperate to tell You're ready to enchant them when you cast your magic spell But there's beer and there's dancing so you think you might as well Sing them Wonderwall and Wagon Wheel again

Get your things together, head out to the bar Set up the microphones and plug in your guitar But you know what they all came for and that is why you are Singing Wonderwall and Wagon Wheel again

This is a lovely picture of what so many of us are trying to do. I think this month we can all empathize with "The page has little space for all the words you're crossing out." And I love the alliteration of "Wonderwall and Wagon Wheel." I kept hoping that maybe our narrator would have taken a chance at the end . . .

I knew the punchline was coming and it still made me laugh. A classic lament for all us songwriters who perform at open mics. We want them to want our originals, but we all know what they really want. I saw a bumper sticker once that said "Friends don't let friends play Wagon Wheel," and if I ever find it again, I'll send you one.

What a great lament for the gigging musician. Working so hard on their original material only to never find the right time to perform them. And how fun would it be to bust out this song when those songs are requested? Clever idea

I knew there was a reason that I avoided non-filk audiences. ๐Ÿ˜€ Good song, kind of funny, kind of sad.

(Wait! People edit things?)

Funny, true, melodic and catchy like...

Very good song - oh my are there 2 songs guaranteed to start a discussion, well yup i think we could both write a better lyric to Wagon wheel and how many more wonderwalls. The uke sound great - i would rather listen to this than either thank you very much

Great folk song. And the "Ending on the tonic and perhaps a little gin" is a genius line in this context. Also got a bit carried away with a little spoof you just now inspired:

Someday is gonna be the day that we no longer have to sing that sooong ๐ŸŽต Tonight it could have been alright but alas the crowd was wrong ๐ŸŽต I don't agree that anybody should be shackled to their sets ๐ŸŽต And sing wonderwall. ๐ŸŽถ

Ukedudes are pressured to learn riptide ๐ŸŽถ And somewhere over all the rainbows they can't hide ๐ŸŽถ There are so many songs I wrote that I would like to sing ๐ŸŽถ But I ain't allowed ๐ŸŽถ

But maaaaaybeeeeee........ ๐ŸŽถ

As someone whoโ€™s played in my fair share of bars I feel this! Love the line about ending on a tonic and perhaps a little gin, so clever.

@tiggy

I feel this. Someone I knew years ago used to be asked for Tie a Yellow Ribbon when playing his own music at a regular gig. It got so he almost walked away even though he needed the cash.

Hey, this is the job sometimes ๐Ÿคฃ Even as an audience member I still get hype for both! I live in the Raleigh, NC that gets shouted out in the song so itโ€™s kind of a freebie with audiences here!

Ya know, this is a great tune. I'm really enjoying listening to it, and also it's got me a little nostalgic, I used to really have a chip on my shoulder about those kinds of gigs. I always thought it was unfair no one wanted to hear my stuff. Nowadays on those gigs I just start playing my songs in the middle of the set and people seem to love it, lol. I actually like playing Wagon Wheel and Wonderwall now. I used to find it repugnant. It doesn't hurt that I do a killer version of each too.

Nicely done with everything you crafted here. It's a good strong tune. and well played.

I enjoyed this! You tell a story with ease. Every line sounds effortless with those rhymes and details. Very entertaining with your vocal and playing. Well done.

i love the way you tell this story and there is so much to relate to. On my old turf, however, i was the bars where you could sing your own songs, and the streets where you made your money busking with covers. so were i to write this song, my story would end with "when i start to get hunger and i need something to eat / ill just sing wonderwall and wagon wheel in the street. another topshelf song from my favorite scotsman.

@tiggy

You are currently the most prolific songwriter I know, and all are interesting . You'll need at least three sets at the next con!

[pic]

Cheers :). All in the hope that there'll be quality somewhere in the quantity, but really I think I can't resist a target... maybe if I make it to 14 my brain will let me get back to work!

[pic]

Brilliant here Edwin! I love how you do the juxtaposition in your writing so well. It's all about the craft, but I'm performing covers. A jaunty little number.

[pic]

Whoa. How did you get iny studio? And in my head? This is the life of a singer-songwriters in a nutshell.

Every time I hear anything by Oasis I start twitching, but even I found this rather engaging. Particularly the gin and tonic gag. Lovely tone on that uke, too.
