Liner Notes

This is one of those songs that was too impatient to wait until February - the chord progression and most of the melody came a few weeks ago, but I’ve held off the last few touches until today. It’s another love song, albeit a rather different vibe to my previous effort. I guess it’s also about the fragile nature of the world just now. Hard not to let that slip in at the moment.

I’m trying to channel my inner John Mayer here, albeit with a fraction of the guitar chops*. In fact, I’d have liked more time to work on the solo, but… well, FAWM. I may also have taken a little diversion to Cheese Town in the chorus, for which I may or may not be sorry.

There’s actually less production going on here than it sounds. I wanted to really anchor the sound around bass, drums and an organ (a bit like Mayer’s ‘Gravity’), and then have the guitar as more of a decorative thing. That said, I may treat myself to some more acoustic, pared back stuff for the rest of the week.

#bluesrock #ballad #possiblyabitcheesy

(* In an attempt to make up for this, I’m using a John Mayer Silver Sky, which I feel is arguably more important than silly things like regular practise.)

Lyrics

Well, I never felt so low Never felt so lost Seems like all the world Is either fire or frost They’re closing the borders Barring the doors Some days you can’t even Leave your home no more

And it makes me realise The unimportant dreams I have worshipped all my life That never meant a thing to me

When there’s nowhere I can turn (She shows me where I’m meant to be) When I feel the fire burn (She can be a sanctuary) I don’t know where I’m going But I never hit the bottom

The dark clouds gather In a clear blue sky It gets so hard to tell The truth among the lies And I hear the sirens I see the lights I watch them flashing As the world dissolves to white

And it makes me realise The one important thing On which I can rely Is standing right in front of me

(Chorus & solo)

Well, I never felt so low Never felt so lost Seems that all the world Is either fire or frost

And it makes me realise The unimportant dreams I have worshipped all my life That never meant a thing to me

(Chorus)

Sounds great. Love the vocals. Those backing title line vocals, too, those are a tasty touch. I like the guitar playing, for what it's worth. I like Mayer a lot so I understand the comparison.

[pic]

I too am a John Mayer fan so I dig what you're doing here. I was hooked on, "Last Train Home," for all of 2025.

The call and response on the chorus is great. It totally uplifts when we get there. (How do you get the high vocals? Are you pitching up your vox or do you have a secret female singer lurking?)Your production is solid. The mix is big and wide.

[pic]

Thanks James! Sadly it’s just me doing falsetto, no pitch shifting 😅

[pic]

Same here. If someone ever soloed those tracks it'd be humiliating. LOL

@gm7

Cheezie town chorus is awesome. I am a fan of John Mayer and this song is on my repeat list. Sob Rock lives!

@oswlek

Yowzer! This kicks ass. And then spins me around and kicks my ass again. So smooth and creamy and soulful. I don't get any cheese, just a strong satisfying lift with a brilliant call/response. And it nails the landing whether it's resolving back to the verse or the solo. Which also kicks ass. 😄

I'm a big fan of those stabbed guitar chords to punctuate the snare. I love them every time I hear them, yet never have the good sense to use them myself. I should make it a FAWM goal to employ them at least once. It won't be this good, though!

That organ is so lovely. With the bass and drums, you've got all you need as a foundation.

I can keep going if you want. Stellar vocal performance, great melody, outstanding arrangement full of satisfying lifts and resolves. Sweet guitar playing. Rest assured that whatever piece of granular song creation or construction was terrific. 😄

@cts

I'm not getting any cheese here. And I'm not sure I'd want it. What I am getting is a bit of rawness (and I'm not really comfortable using rawness). I can definitely sense the Mayer vibe. It's in there...like one of many ingredients that makes Nanna's spaghetti sauce taste so marvelous. You get where I'm coming from? Lyrically, I'm getting here what so many others have expressed. Again, I can't rightly describe it...I just sense it. In some ways I can relate and in other ways, I cannot. Still - this is giving me pause to think. Music and performance never disappoint from you. Once or twice maybe, I've been tempted to see if you could purposefully go sideways with a song. I'm going to stop here. I don't want to overcook my sentiment.

[pic]

Some mighty tasty cheese, if that's what you want to call it. Seems super sweet and sincere to me, and the whole number sounds beautifully put together. Take a bow, sir.

[pic]

Ok...I'm back. I've probably listened five times, at least. I've also read all the comments. One thing is so clearly evident, this song is fantastic but more than that, you have so much respect and admiration from this community. Every ounce of it is well deserved. Your music, composition, lyric writing and production skills are all enviable. However, what has everyone coming back for more is you are just so darn humble, encouraging and just the kind of guy everybody is routing for. Thanks for giving us this song and for just being you. Kudos...

[pic]

Thank you dude. What a lovely comment. Blushing profusely over here ☺️

[pic]

Quality in every department, David...inspired music and lyrics plus intense, soulful vocals...I can only sit back and applaud...👏👏👏

[pic]

Great progression and vibe. Nice playing and great dynamic epic production and performance. 🙌🎶🎸

[pic]

This didn't strike me as the slightest bit cheesy. It's a beautiful, heartfelt song, well performed and recorded. The John Mayer influence comes through loud and clear, but that's a good thing. Nice use of augmented chords. My wife bought me a PRS John Mayer Silver Sky for my birthday last year and it has quickly become one of my favorite guitars. You make good use of yours here. Your playing is very controlled and dynamic. Really great work, David!

[pic]

Slow jam me to the moon, my friend. If this is cheesy, then I'm a happy slice of baguette waiting for one more bite 🧀. So tasty I'll forgive you for getting a head start. Guitar tone is just right, the backing vocals on point, the lyric soulfully and lovingly delivered. Yessir.

[pic]

oh wow. love that organ. it really was perfect for this song. your guitar chops are impressive. really tasteful bluesy solos. vocals are top notch. your songs never feel like demos. they always feel ready to be released and played on the radio. such a strong start to the month. so excited to hear more from you throughout the month!

[pic]

Ah, one of my favorites of yours ever! Terrific, terrific song--production, vocal, the lyrics, you name it! ❤️

[pic]

Nice organ-driven ballad. A meaningful juxtaposition of the chaos outside to the sense of home inside. Powerful prechorus lyric, both times. And that little stop time at the end of the chorus as well as the instrumental - chef’s kiss. Well done friend.

[pic]

You continue to break the mould on production (and arrangement), and the guitar is delicious. The organ (B3?) is a glove-like fit, the backing vocals are lusciously warm, the groove gets the body swaying and your voice really shines. The chosen subject is hard to avoid for any of us at the moment and I understand your impatience to express what you feel in your music (me too). They should be playing this one on the radio. Amazing stuff (as usual)!

[pic]

Dude, you just know how to write this kind of songs. Such a nice fluffy, almost jazzy feeling. I love the backing vocals, and the arrangement. The organ was sweet, not cheesy.

P.S. David, yesterday I just saw a video about what guitar types say about the player, and I guess they just described yuo when talking about the John Mayer Silver Sky loool

[pic]

Haha. I don't want to know what this says about me tbh!

[pic]
@triads

Ok, wow, this song is much higher value than the entrance fee. Looking forward to the full show!!

[pic]

Wow, It´s more of real love Town than cheesy. With the right person you can really feel like this. Its a great song with a heartfelt performance. I really thinkl its A-A-_Amazing. Keep em coming.

[pic]

So good! Belongs in the same space as the classic blues songs. And echoing eveyone else's sentiments below, of course. Cheesy? I'd maybe just say heartfelt?

[pic]

Dude, that organ is massive! Just full-throated and growly and bluesily brilliant. The guitars are bright-eyed but also tender like a... wait, I'm in danger of turning this note in in the style of Theophilus P Wildebeest. Rein it in, Neil! All right, two things:

  1. So you're doing love songs. Thank you for that. It's wonderful to have my focus drawn to things that matter, humanity and togetherness, all that mushy stuff.
  2. That Dm Gaug Cm7 progression is pure sex. Woof!
[pic]

“That organ is massive!” … made me nearly spit out my coffee 🤣 For that, and for bringing up prime Lenny Henry, I thank you mate.

[pic]

You're welcome!

[pic]

Just a big enormous YES on this one, David. I love how the steady bass/organ/rhythm guitar leave room for the gorgeous phrasing and flow of the lyrics. The “fire and frost” line is particularly layered and satisfying. I will also confess that I was getting a Paul McCartney/Wings vibe in the best possible way.

[pic]

Comparisons with Wings… yes please! Thanks Erin :)

[pic]

This is a viiiiibe. I can feel the Mayeryness without it sounding like a ripoff. It just feels like a good time. I love your chord choices, super tasty. Great tones and delivery. If this is cheesy, I want to eat it every day.

[pic]

Great lyrics and production with a fantastic mix. Creates quite the vibe! Love the background vocals!

[pic]

Big ideas, big vocals, big production (at least for me), but basically I just want to say this is big, a lot (in a good way!). Classic David Taro!

[pic]

It’s not cheesy. It really isn’t at all. It’s balance for the dark lyrics and chord extensions.

Guitar sounds good though you’re right that it could use another pass on it at some point to tighten up a few of the bends.

The production level is perfect, it sounds huge without the overabundance of instrumentation that can be thrown at stuff these days.

[pic]

your vocals and the deliberate pacing reminds me of the acoustic version of never had a love like this before, which is my most listened to of your youtube videos. if the cheese of the chorus is in the female vocals, im glad you slathered it on. ive never listened to john mayer, so im not one to comment on his influence, but if he is anything ike this, i will have to check him out.

[pic]

Oh my gosh.... I am speechless! I could tell you everything I like about this, but it would end up being an essay. I'll keep it short. Those chord changes, the B3, holy cow, groovy background vocals, and masterful production!

[pic]

Thank you!! That means an awful lot :)

[pic]

Amazing production as always! If this is "less production" I need to know the secret :). And there's nothing wrong with a bit of cheese, really, is there? Not too much or you get bad dreams instead of the unimportant ones, but nothing struck me as over the top here. This was a really nice listen. I was enjoying the guitar throughout.

[pic]

you had me in the intro! I spoke to Mayer he said he wishes he had chops like Taro and he had a Djokovic moment "I don't understand why people don't like me like they like David ! Ive said it all before class delivery and production

[pic]

I’m gonna have to comment later…I’m busy trying to write a song about trigonometry…I may be a while…

[pic]

incredible production and damn good guitar-playing aside (don’t sell yourself short!), i relate so hard to these lyrics. i feel so lucky that i don’t have to shoulder all the horrors alone, that there’s someone who will rub all the knots and tension out of them, and that i will do the same for her. what a song.

(i hate how much i love Room For Squares because john mayer does really suck as a guy. but also damn, that album is really something)

[pic]

Love the guitar tones here. Powerful vocal performance and the backing vocals are chefs kiss. Solo is fire. I have a Slash Les Paul which I agree, is maybe more important than regular practice 😂

[pic]
@sbs

Lennon meets Mayer. Love that opening guitar - so yummy! A melodic vibe as smooth as drinking a Scottish Professor. This is what I’m here for.

[pic]

You’re an immense talent. And so utterly likeable…I know Mayer is a good player but he may be the most punchable dude I can think of…so much so that I can’t listen to his music…again I acknowledge he shreds but I just can’t.

You’ve got so much tasty tasty candy in here and the guitar sounds SOOO good. Your voice is powerful and the arrangement is incredible. I’m a sucker for an organ. I don’t think I’ve commented on it much but you’re a great bass player too. You e got the groove! Positively beautiful. Lastly you are a true artist with the pen as well. Your words always make me think. You’re great at distilling emotions into cogent words and I truly (no BS, no being FAWM nice) and earnestly think you’re the most talented human being I’ve ever met.

[pic]

Yeah, kind of agree on Mayer as a person... but DAMN his playing is so so so good. Although I really only like his Continuum album. Anyway, the rest of that message makes me feel very happy and I love you dearly too. In fact, I may go and check out one of yours before I turn in for the night. Cheers dude!

@kc_

Nice B3! Tasty crunch on the guit! Diggin' it Dave! Nice... great write, composition, performance and production! Catch a hint of Van Morrison around the line of "fire". Sweet!!
