Liner Notes

There's a place just a few minutes from where I live where, when there is a nice astronomical event like an aurora or a meteor shower or an eclipse, I can be pretty sure of a dark sky. So often, though, something else comes along with the same idea.

Sometimes when I write things like this, I like to sneak in some extra detail with a hidden meaning. But just to be clear, here, I am simply using a bit of #ukulele #nerdfolk to moan about the weather.

Ideally I'd record this again and find the same tune for each verse and chorus, but honestly I am too tired. Perhaps I'll come back to it if I decide I like it enough.

Lyrics

We have to go to see it A rare and special sight A trail of dust and debris A fleeting burst of light

They blaze into existence Then fade away and die So find the darkest corner While we've got a clear sky

With hats and coats and gloves and setting off to see the show We'll walk out to the fields to escape the city glow We'll climb the hill, to find a better view But the clouds'll come along to see it too Like us, to find a better view

When Venus makes her journey Across Apollo's face When the planets are aligning To warn us of our fates

With hats and coats and gloves we're setting off to see the show We'll walk out to the fields to escape the city glow We'll climb the hill, to find a better view But the clouds'll come along to see it too Like us, to find a better view

Tonight the gods are angered And the moon goes fiery red We'll watch from safe below As it rages overhead

With hats and coats and gloves we're setting off to see the show We'll walk out to the fields to escape the city glow We'll climb the hill, to find a better view But the clouds'll come along to see it too Like us, to find a better view

They only want to find a better view Like us, they want a better view

This is both cute and thoughtful. You may not have intended metaphors, but there they are. The idea that the clouds want a better view too can be interpreted in a lot of ways, as can the cosmic nature of the verses. I agree with the previous commenter that you captured a lot in a friendly little uke song about stargazing. :)

Lovely song, my friend. I love the extreme zoom-in during the choruses and then extreme zoomed-out perspective during the verses. It captured my attention immediately. It's like you've told a creation story and then captured the human-condition over the course of a single song. Quite a feat!

i love the observation that the clouds will follow you in order to get a better view. we're not the only entities that want to get a better view of cosmic phenomena.

Ahh this paints such a special picture, walking out on terrestial land to see something incredibly celestial and so beyond our understanding. I LOVE the choice of uke for this, it gives a hopeful longing and sweet and just...oh...all the FEELS...tone to the entire composition. I think this might be my favorite of yours this sprint :)

Well, that ukulele melancholy got me crying even before I got to the gods. I would really like to go back to the other timeline now thank you. I’m just a little hobbit and not meant for watching these things happen.

It's interesting that, even though this was written and intended literally as "it always seems to be cloudy when cool stuff happens in the sky", there's plenty of other interpretations now that I look again. I hate this timeline too. Here's to clear skies!

The old classic uke progression! I use it for improvisation regularly. Well its the the British dna to moan about the weather. I like the Pace pick up, comes at the right time to move things on!

Lovely as always, Edwin. There's some really beautiful imagery in this. And I love the sentiment of the clouds trying to get a better view!
