why complain? the understudy is getting paid and doesnt have to do anything beyond learning the part and being prepared. when i was directing, i never had the budget for understudies, so when an actor wasnt able to perform or just didnt show up, i had to do the part. it was nerve racking. once in a childrens play, one of the 10 year old boys was grounded by his parents for skipping school that day and i had to shave my beard and be the third of a trio of 10 year olds. boy, did that test my versatility. another time, my polonious went out after the saturday night peformance and got drunk with an old frined who had become famous . when he failed to show uop for the sunday matinee, i had to play that part. so understudies whould be happy to be getting paid to be on hand. they do more than not act. they relieve the director's anxiety.

My mind went (as a bass player) to certain lead guitarists I've known over the years. (To be clear, not the current ones...) But, yeah, this works as a theatrical understudy, and maybe in middle management, too! Great pub tune! Superb vocals and picking, too!
