These Days

Liner Notes
Dan: Vocals, Guitar, Bass, Percussion Sarah: Vocals, Keys, Trumpet
Dan says: Here we go again! Sarah gave me a few prompts to choose from and the obvious choice for me was “Abstruse Leverage.” Haha. I recorded my parts and sent to Sarah and she proceeds to send me vocals, keys and no less than 7 trumpet tracks. Mix mix mix. Always a blast. Thanks! 🙌🎶
Sarah says: it’s always a pleasure to collaborate with Dan! I may have gotten a little carried away with the trumpet especially, but I was having so much fun! In case anyone wonders what the muted sound is behind the chorus, I’m using a cup mute. And…the prompt…I keep a running list of “poetic phrases from unexpected places”. This one came from a scholarly paper about corporate jargon 😆

Lyrics
These Days - September 6, 2026
Abstrusely ambiguous. Leveraging, continuous Abstract in all the wrong ways Ciphers to decipher these days
Chorus: Just lookin for some clarity For you and me Why don’t you say what you mean For once
Unequivocally preposterous Deceptively deceiving us Uniquely obscuring mainstays Facts, unsecured these days
Vaguely vicious vitriol Wavering large and small Simultaneously swaggering crazy Overloaded navigating these days

The measure and flow of the lyric, the phrases with the more sharp, biting quality, especially where they're alliterative... well done! And this arrangement is marvelous, occasionally bordering on whimsical. Kudos, both of you!
That chorus is such a great resolve. That tambourine is perfect. Loving the lyric, the combination of voices, that cool acoustic guitar run... well, really all of it. This is great!
Thanks for listening! @danvaillancourt was the mastermind here, it was so easy to add my parts in after what he'd created as a canvas. Really appreciate your kind comment!
This is a truly wonderful song. What a collaboration!! The lyrics, playing, singing and arrangement - I love it. And the trumpet is really cool.
Thanks so much for the trumpet shoutout! I had fun with this one, it's such a fun song!
A wonderful musical journey - and a lyrical gymnastics act - brilliantly done, love the trumpet parts and the guitar riffs - when it’s gets to the call and response that’s super with the background signaling to the solos giving me jazz vibes. Super ending section bravo!
Thank you thank you! It was a fun call-and-response at the end and it was a bit like soloing in jazz (I do a bit of that in one of the groups I play for :) )
Great collab, you two! Sarah, the recording of your trumpet tracks sounds so good. I want that on one of my songs too, I just don't know what. I'm sure you're also hella in demand.
Haha well let me know if something calls out for it! I might have time :)
You guys this is awesome. Harmonies, flow, everything. I loved it.
Thank youuuuu 🥰
My high school years were all about trumpet, keys, and voice. ;-)
And looking up words like "abstrusely"... Great collaboration, you two! Love everything about it! ❤️
Thanks so much for so many kind words! This was a blast (literally and figuratively) to put together! Time for you to dust off your trumpet???!!! It would be awesome to have another FAWM trumpeter!
Yup the trumpet is lovely! it certainly needs a thesaurus! but worth working through it! The vocals and all vocal effects are top class as is the running guitar! fine song
Thanks so much for the trumpet shout-out! The mix turned out really great, I couldn't have imagined that my random prompts would lead to something so fun!
Two things really hit me on a first listen: The interplay between the mariachi-esque trumpets and the intricate guitar motif is inspired and totally makes the song feel special; and then the clever, creative lyrical stylings on the verses. Also love the combo of your voices. Oh and then the way you’re playing with the motif later in the song is such fun and really highlights some top musicianship. So that’s four things, then? Awesome collab!
Thanks so much for listening! An honor that you didn't stop at just a few kind things to say. My heart is full reading these compliments!
I suspect you have a well-thumbed thesaurus and dictionary at home. They certainly got a workout for this song!
The guitar work is impressive and I love the brass choir. It's particularly tasty at the end, when you do the instrumental call-and-response between the guitars and the trumpets.
Great fun!
Dan's lyrical prowess with the prompt was perfection! Thanks for the brass shoutout and solo section kind words!
Oh this is delightful! The trumpet harmonies are excellent, and the guitar parts are tasty and wonderfully recorded. Top shelf vocal work guys! Love the fun rhymes in the verses. Great tune!!
Thanks so much!! I appreciate your kind words! I was originally just going to record one trumpet line, but then I was like, hmmm...let's see what adding one more will do. And then I had seven -- ha!
Today's a harmony day. Every song I've listened to (not just yours) has had beautiful harmonies. Love them! Great guitar, bass, and trumpet playing too. And these lyrics... wonderful! I feel like this presentation has a hippyesque sound if not a full-on hippy vibe. Love that!
