Don't Call Me Shirley
Liner Notes
What's that, you say? You want another #MovieQuote song? With more Leslie Nielsen? Oh, go on then. I'm sure I don't need to tell you that this one is taken from the absolute classic Airplane! (1980).
This is a more straight-ahead #rock or #pop approach than you're probably used to from me. There's a lot of #guitar, the almost-inevitable Jazz bass, and a bit of #Warr-guitar, but there are no synths on this at all. Not even one. And at under three minutes, it's #short and (I hope) sweet.
Lyrics
I've had enough of presidents and kings Let's elect a bunch of Muppets instead They couldn't do a worse job of running things Surely you can't be serious, they said
I am serious. And don't call me Shirley.
I'm not the slightest bit confused I know I'm right when I refuse to play a game that I can't win Not taking part's not giving in
I can't believe I didn't think of this before I just quit the job that made me brain dead They only noticed when I walked out the door Surely you can't be serious, they said
This AI is no better than predictive text Don't believe that rubbish on the web you read But when I refuse to use it 'cause it makes me vexed Surely you can't be serious, they said

Brilliant! What an entertaining listen. I have also used the Surely/Shirley; still makes me laugh. Thanks
This rocks in the best quirky way! Love the driving beat and great guitar lead and riff! Love the change up between different sections! Fabulous vocals, Shirley! This makes me smile and bop!
I think i say this at least once - stop calling me Shirley! my wife just rolls her eyes! Too late the muppets are in charge. Looks like i choose the wrong week to stop listening to headfirstonly! why coz this is good !
This gave me such a smile. One of my favourite movie lines ever. Such a delightful song and so well executed! The chorus is super lit and that ending guitar solo is just epic!
This is a great listen...I love where you went for the bridge breakdown with the progressions...some nice turns before the last verse. Really cool bass lines too! Engaging ode to standing your ground against the tide of rubbish too many seem to just go along with...well done!
Great way of fitting the quote into a larger social context. And the textures are classic HeadFirstOnly, which is to say amazing.
Thereās a slight U2 feel to some of the guitar playing in this that Iām enjoying. Iām impressed by how youāve woven the quote into the lyrics without it sticking out or feeling forced. A fun song that sounds great.
Great listen! And the quote is gold. I really like the voice performance here.
Oh my gosh, I say that all the time. I'm liking the doubled vox in there. That's some muscular guitar. Another good one!
I havenāt been able to say āsurelyā without somebody quoting this ever since āAirplaneā - lol!
As an Airplane fan the title caught my eye and I was compelled to listen. Glad I did, it works! Catchy :-) Oddly enough this morning I woke up thinking about a different movie quote - youāve inspired me to maybe write a song :-)
This is the way!
ha! great fun, and of course the music is so well produced and performed and mixed. Great exploration of that fun phrase...
Good job Shirley. You have some very witty commentary here.
One of the best movie quotes ever, the title drew me right in! This line struck me: Not taking part's not giving inā. Love all the mix elements, but I especially dig the bass tone!
This made me smile. I remember Leslie Nielsen saying that. š Creative lyric set to a great soundscape. Well done!
