My Bookshelves

Liner Notes

sorry about the buzz. Where all the gremlins come from is a mystery to me.

John I think we may be onto our 7th year of collabs, we must have more than a dozen with Fawm and 50/90. I just flick a lyric and Marthie bends it to her will, which means a cool piano abd a top class vocal.

Lyrics

Bookshelves

v I look along the shelves Like a story of my life A top sits the family photos The children and my wife.

V I only keep the special books So they read like a history Of all my years of mulling Untangling the mystery

c Oh my bookshelves holding my past Remembering the good times trying to make them last

v They say you can tell a lot about someone From the books along the shelves Mines pretty eclectic So they they can make it up themselves

v From mysteries to fishing books Music and travel Books with facts and puzzles For you to unravel

cOh my bookshelves holding my past Remembering the good times trying to make them last

bSadly I’m a techno now Books now, only when i must So slowly my bookshelves Have started to gather dust

C cOh my bookshelves holding my past Remembering the good times trying to make them last

My, how beautiful this is. The piano playing is top notch, with beautiful chord choices. Vocals shine and are so dynamic. I could sing like this about my books on my shelves who are my friends…today I pretty much only do audio books but I still have a shelf full of copies. Will I ever pick them up again? Who knows…

That piano line pulls me so instantly! Beautiful and tender. And the lyric and melody. I relate to this so much. I love and treasure my books and the memories of when I read those books. I do much less of that kind of reading and this awakens some of those feelings.

We are in the process of doing some house-clearing and we have had to get rid of a lot of books, so this strikes a chord with me. The playing is so sympathetic to the vocal, the two work so well together for a very touching result.

I love hearing Marthie without the reverb effect! Really nice performance. Sort of laid back and quiet but also powerful. The lyrics really capture the days gone by feeling. Like being left in the dust just like the books.

I have been trying to learn the piano for the last 3 months - when I hear your playing I realize this is exactly why I wanted to learn - the way you squeeze so much expression into your playing and your voice has me transfixed. I aspire to be at this level - I dont think you are playing anything super complicated, but the way you navigate the keyboard contains such effortless intensity! I see you have quite a few lyrics, but you say you are open for collaboration... could I email you a couple of lyrics and see if you were interested in them? I dont have them posted because I always feel I will "get to them sometime" as a musician - but I would be flattered if you would take a look!

Yes sure send some over.@fabkebab. Good luck with the piano- they become friends and sometimes listen and play what you tell them- them planos. I usually compose when I hear my first ‘mistake’. Like I tried to demonstrate in ‘time, water and stardust’

Hi @marthie what is the best way to contact you? By mailing something to your website?

Well done on this collaboration! The piano goes so well with the subject/lyrics and the singing is great.

i can relate to this lyric, as i had to sell all my books in 2012 before moving to peru, and i wasnt able to buy any books in peru as the postal system was corrupt and rife with theivery. so now that i am back in the states i have been restoring my former library and am re-reading a lot of the books that have influenced me through life. marthie does a wonderful job of personalizing johns lyrics and setting them to a winning melody and a lovely piano arrangement.
