Liner Notes

Neil says: Patty sent me this wonderful lyric right back at the beginning of FAWM 2026. I loved it and I've been pondering what style to go with ever since. It really needed to be something country-ish though didn't it? Thanks so much for collabbing, Patty!

Patty says: I’ve enjoyed Neil’s songs on FAWM for years, and I was hoping to be able to collab with him this year. I felt this lyric would be a good choice for his many talents. The quiet country style seems like it fits perfectly with the message. Thank you, Neil!

Lyrics

V1    He talks to every mountain Listens to the wind Hopes to find a rainbow Just around the bend

V2 His eyes reflect a sadness That doesn’t have a name He’s fallen for a woman Whose dreams are not the same

Ch He’s country, she’s city Alluring at first But it’s killing them both inside He’s country, she’s city They can’t make it work Apart by a country mile

V3 He couldn’t wait to show her The sunrise from his porch The fragrance of the fir trees But truth is, she was bored

V4 The quiet made her antsy The mountains hemmed her in She couldn’t see a life here It didn’t fit her skin

Ch He’s country, she’s city Alluring at first But it’s killing them both inside He’s country, she’s city They can’t make it work Apart by a country mile

Br He met her in town when he picked up supplies He fell for the spark in her eyes But it isn’t enough He sees that now But still, it gets him down

Ch He’s country, she’s city Alluring at first But it’s killing them both inside He’s country, she’s city They can’t make it work Apart by a country mile

These are great lyrics. A tale as old as time and a nice spin on this theme! And love the arrangement. That second to last chord in the chorus hits hard. And the organ is awesome!

This song has a classic 1960’s country feel to it… the piano and organ co-mingling to bring a feel of melancholy. Simple, but effective, story… clean instrumentation, effective harmonies bring the perfect blend. Great cowriting!

Love that big opening organ and how it is used throughout the song. It adds a nice lift to the chorus. Wonderful space in the instrumental track around the verses. Beautiful piano playing. The deep, rich vocals are so expressive. I can really feel the pain in the chorus of what can never be. Patty does an excellent job highlighting the space between these two characters, summing it up so succinctly in the line "Apart by a country mile". As always such wonderful and relatable story telling in these lyrics. Great collab!

This is lovely - sweet, sad, wistful. The mellow country vibe suits the lyrics perfectly. The piano is awesome!

Love the choice of instrumentation on this. The organ sounds perfect on it. Great story song Patty. I can imagine hearing it in a pub or a roadhouse stop. It’s very cool.

@miga

Beautiful piano playing and singing! Very evocative of the sadness of something that seemed good but just can't stand the test of time 😭 I like the realism of the lyrics that don't 'cave' and lead to a happy ending. Seems almost more relatable that way. Really nice job!

Great collab. The lyrics are a good bit of storytelling, and I like the telling details: picking up supplies; the scent of the fir trees

Thanks. I like hearing what resonates with a listener, so this encourages me for the next lyric.

It's a country song without guitars, which just shows that country's a state of mind. The organ is adding great flourishes, but as usual, it's the progressions that build it so well. Smart choices with the harmonising and occasional jazzy note to add appropriate twanginess! Captures the mood in the lovelorn lyrics to a T. Plenty of things to love, but the overall is, it's a great collab. Loads of heart!

Great song! I love the rhythm and chord progression of the tune and how well the instrumentals support the lyrics. The story is crystal clear and the images do a great job of painting the divide between the two lovers: I love "The quiet made her antsy/The mountains hemmed her in/She couldn’t see a life here/It didn’t fit her skin"

Erin, so glad you enjoyed our song. I thought @ayeahmur did a great job of presenting a sad story, but one that I'm sure happens now and then. And thanks for pointing out the lyric lines that you particularly liked. That helps me for the next song.

A sad and well written song. Reminds me of a romcom, but in the end he would be showing up in her city to be with her -lol. You paint beautiful visuals. I love the country treatment. A perfect fit! Awesome collaboration ❤️

Thanks, Andrea. I know what you mean about the romcom plot, but somehow I went in a different direction! Probably won't get chosen for a TV special now, right? 😀 I thought @ayeahmur's music and vocal showed real sympathy for the underlying sadness in the message. That's talent.

Definitely country (Yee-Haw!) About half of the songs I write are country, I do love this one. Great collaboration! ❤️

The organ gives it a sound like The Band, but with Bruce Hornsby taking the lead on piano! Great lyrics, fully showing the story - but so predictable, from the title!

Ah what a great (albeit heartbreaking? concept)! The instrumentation is great and I love the harmonies!

Great premise (I know several couples who are a bit like this!), expertly told and composed. I was sold from the opening organ glissando. Neil’s really captured the underlying sense of sadness, both in the mournful country balladry and the longing in the vocal. Lovely collab, well done both!

The lyrics tell a great story of a tragic incompatibility very well. The music is appropriately sad, and the performance and production are excellent. Wonderful collaboration.

A very country lyric well taken to more cross genre by the delivery! Yup star organ there for sure. Very tight lyric that moves along the story. Nice collab

what a fun collab! and it worked out so well. i love the organ a lot a lot and the piano is gorgeous as well. the vocals are a perfect match for the instrumentation and your mix on this too! nice job both of you. lyrics are really intriguing and carry you through a story. more from you both, please!

Thank you, it was a lot of fun to do!
