Liner Notes

Imagine finding a collection of someone's love letters from years ago, an element of their history you've never heard of. That's the basis of Old Love Letters. In lyric form, it was called Collected Memories, which was entirely accurate. The repeated phrase in the chorus suggested the title you see above and Liz graciously approved the change.

When Liz heard the original recording, she offered to send some harmonies to add to the track. Thus inspired, I added some, too.

Liz Says .... Thank you Paul for putting together this great song. It was a delightful collaboration. I really enjoy how you make the music reflect the sentiment of the lyrics.

Lyrics

Deep at the back of a hallway closet Where collected memories tarry Lingers a tattered, world-weary box Waiting to meet the light of day

Under the lid, dusty cards and ribbons Quiet remnants of your life Keepsakes that give proof of existence Revealed to unfamiliar eyes

A stack of old love letters Fastened with frayed twine From long ago when you were together When two hearts were combined A stack of old love letters

Ink on paper held your love together Faded by time, but not erased Alone at the end, you weren't together There are truths the letters didn't say

Now in my hands, your past feels nearer In notes from the one your heart adored Loving echoes of a hidden chapter Are quietly tucked away once more

A stack of old love letters Fastened with frayed twine From long ago when you were together When two hearts were combined A stack of old love letters

A story you kept in silence Reveals itself at last The love you never mentioned Emerges from the past

A stack of old love letters Fastened with frayed twine From long ago when you were together When two hearts were combined A stack of old love letters

Thanks for your positive comments on this and "Letters from Minnesota", Liz. I try to grab the best lyrics to work with which is also why I pick yours, too.

This turned out beautifully! I agree that the melody (and harmonies) support the lyrics so well.

Amazing collaboration. These are REALLY lovely lyrics--and no one covers a set of lyrics better than Paul! ❤️

Thanks so much, Jerry. In truth, I expect many people can cover lyrics better than I can, but I appreciate your faith in me.

Thanks for this glimpse into some unknown people's histories. Some nice little details about the fading and the twine with some joy but also a bit of nostalgia in the tune. Lovely harmonies too.

Ah, you were attracted to the same details as I was. Thanks for visiting our song.

I like the harmonies in the chorus. Nicely delivered. Those details bring us right into the play by play of the discovery. Great details of being in the moment!

Wonderful collaboration and idea! So much to think about and many ways this story could play out. Harmonies remind me of barbershop chorus. Love it for Valentine’s Day!
