Red Shift (cello version)

Liner Notes
#acoustic #cello Dan: @briansmith answered my call for a cellist to play over this track on one of the forum threads and I could not have been more happy. I was expecting one stem but he sent me 5 and I literally cried a bit when I hear them for the first time. The sadness of the cellos and the sheer beauty of the harmonies they create moved me so much, I enjoyed getting them all mixed down although it took a bit of work. I am likely to use this track on my next album as I love it so much!
Brian:
Lyrics
Count the stars, count them all, Hang them up on your wall, Notice how they blink and fade, As they red shift away, And how the starlight bends and plays, Like the lights are lost in phase, Count the stars, count them all, Hang them up on your wall.
Your nights are so long, Your days red shift away, Your nights grow so long, Your days red shift away, But only curious minds, Yes, only curious minds ever notice.
Fragile as the night is long, It goes on and on, There’s a light that splits in two, Beauty radiates from you, Lonely like a violin, Tender as a lullaby, Half remembered late at night, And so softly spoken.

I realized this is really the version I heard, so pasting my comment here: SoundCloud this one up to me while I was listening to a @twyllodrus song. I was surprised it was one you’d done for this FAWM, it sounds so finished. What a beautiful response to a science documentary. I especially like the way each phrase is so clear and clean and I can picture them, but there’s a lot of space to build in my own story to hang the lines together.
Ooo I love this. Wonderful vocal performance, instruments and lyrics. Science and space imagery hits me so hard - that red shift man! This song has me thinking about the relationship between love and the heat death of the universe. I think love will win in the end.
Very poetic and touching and the cello adds just the right atmospheric touch. Very nice work here!
This is beautiful and sad at the same time. The cello is a great addition.
Very delicate, intricate finger picking work. And of course Brian's cello tracks are just a perfect addition. This is gorgeous. I love how the melody rises up in the second half of each verse, and then even more in the chorus... very satisfying to the ear.
BTW I don't know if I've said this before Dan, but I really love your voice.
Really, really nice collab. So beautiful, thank you for this.
This is one of the best tracks I’ve heard all FAWM. Your vocals, the cello, the lyrical mastery. My goodness, I’m amazed. Great work both of you!
The cello sounds amazing here! I love this use of the idea of red shift and your subtlety around using that idea. I love the idea of hanging stars on your wall!
Such great controlled singing - as you climb your register the fragility of the message really comes out in the texture. Beautifully crafted song the cello textures are a great touch - reminiscent of Barber’s adagio. Super write, fabulous listen
before listening i sat for a minute and decided whether to go and listen to the first version first. I did do that in the end, and what a song! I came back here knowing exactly what i wanted to hear from the cello, and boy it didnt disappoint. the stereo multi cellos came in and i just smiled and let it consume me. there are two songs from other Fawmers in all the FAWM's i have been part of that I revisit. this will be number 3.
Aw thanks, @celineellis That is so lovely of you to say! ☺️ Brian hit it out of the park with this one!
Was it possible? Yes, it was. This song got even better and I see how you will put it on your release. In a sound world this will be a hit.
After listening to the first version over and over, and being obsessed with it, it's so awesome to hear it with cello; it adds even more of a lift to your already lifted chorus. WOW. And then when the harmony cello comes in oh god full body chills
@froggymagee Thank you so much for your overwhelmingly wonderful feedback. Brian has lifted the song to unbelievable levels. I know what you mean about the body chills. I got them over and over when mixing them down!
Oh my gosh. I had listened to the original version of this track and bookmarked it to come back to (and comment on), because it was one of my favorites and I loved the inspiration. But the addition of the cello? Next level. Unbearably gorgeous.
