This about the generations of lost men/boys who bought into the myth that they needed to achieve power over others in order to be worth anything. And now those men run the world but they themselves are ruled by fear, and that’s super sad! There’s a certain trade-off you get when you seek safety by having power over others, because that safety is instantly washed away the second you show any humanity.

Also I think I went into a fugue state when I wrote this and now I don’t know if the lyrics make any sense at all XD

In retrospect I think I stole the verse chord progression/melody from Lorde’s song “Liability” but ykw it’s fine. Also edited to add: I have never pronounced anything more Midwesternly than "yr systr aftr bayand" I didn't know I had Nordic roots like that

Lyrics

I’m on top of the world cuz I’m better than you And I stand in bocca di lupo Watching the world get swallowed down its giant maw

I’m in a lake of fire, I’m at the combination Top of the world and lake of fire and I am, I fear, quite above the law

Me and my girl, we’re gonna populate the world And then the guys in gym class cannot call me “lil shrimp”

I’m on top of the world, but I never bloomed But I’m better than you so this is now your problem too

Is it weird to think we would’ve been friends? Can I get a ride home from your sister after band? And then I’d see on Facebook in 20 odd years You turned into a red pill made entitled by your fear

We’re on top of the world, we’re in a lake of ice We’re at the combination top of the world and lake of ice And Satan has three heads

It’s weird that people think he rules hell when he hates himself Red, yellow, blue, his trapped heads relentlessly chew

On the betrayal of Christ and imperial decay We grew up in this world and it has always been this way We’re on top of the world, we’re in a lake of ice We’re at the combination top of the world and lake of ice

Is it weird to think we would’ve been friends? Let’s watch Wizard of Oz and smoke to Pink Floyd songs again And then I’d see on Facebook in 20 odd years You turned into a red pill made entitled by your fear

I used to want a tattoo of Dante riding the geryon into hell Cuz I liked the way he seemed to lose and find himself And Canto 2 lines 88 through 90 would surround it Which in Italian would not fit into this song

“A man must live in fear of just those things” “That truly have the power to destroy his whole being” A boy in gym class asked me why I even tried I’d rather try and fail than win a trophy of a lie

You’re on top of the world cuz you’re better than me And you stand in bocca di lupo Watching the world get swallowed down its giant maw

I’m on top of the world cuz I finally bloomed And I do the things I want to do And I’m in danger, but afraid of nothing too

Is it weird to think we would’ve been friends? We’d have political debates over AIM Then I’d see on Facebook how much you never grew You always were a red pill, but I still cared

For you In bocca di lupo

@miga

The lyrics show your ability to see through appearances to the way things are, which is a cool gift to have! Even better to put it into song. You stayed true to your melody too. I like the line "which in Italian would not fit into this song" - a bit like addressing the camera - lol! This song has such a blend of something like disgust and something like compassion - very complex and human.

Great lyrics on this topic! I especially like “ It’s weird that people think he rules hell when he hates himself Red, yellow, blue, his trapped heads relentlessly chew” though I don’t know the significance of those colors, unless it’s that they’re the primary colors.

Tbh I don't know what the colors signify either. It's just how Dante described him in Inferno 😅

Wow! Impressing and true lyrics! Great song!

I love this SO MUCH. This is such a brilliant reflection on toxic masculinity, and that last verse brought me to tears, damn. Beautiful work.
