Angelina Jolie

Liner Notes
One morning in January, I woke up with a melody in my head. I stumbled to a guitar and picked out the chords. Then, for reasons we’ll explore later, my still half-asleep brain started singing “Angelina Jolie”, because it just seemed to fit the tune so darn well.
Since then, I've had the chorus lodged in my brain. But I’ve also not been able to come up with any other formulation of words that fit it better than simply singing “Angelina Jolie” over and over again 😂
Well, over the weekend, I decided to bow to the inevitable. I’ll just lean into the idea that it’s about Angelina Jolie, I thought. Or rather, it’s about why the hell Angelina Jolie was in the dream (which she wasn’t, technically speaking, but allow me some creative license here). Having made that decision, the rest of the song was pretty straightforward to write. It’s incredibly silly, and I thought it was going to be really simple to get down - but it’s ended up taking far far more time than I’m comfortable with. Damn you, Angelina.
Musically, I had Paul Simon’s ‘Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard’ in mind as a reference point, but listening back I think it may be more like a knock-off Barenaked Ladies song. Oh well.
Lyrics
Ooooh, Angelina Jolie Ooooh, Angelina Jolie Ooooh, Angelina Jolie Ooooh, Angelina Jolie
I don’t know what you’re doing in my dream I think your name just suits the melody My psychotherapist would say to me It’s unresolved childhood anxiety
Ooooh, Angelina Jolie What you doing to me Ooooh, Angelina Jolie What the hell could it be
If you ever meant a thing to me I really can’t remember what that thing could be
Am I fixating on Tomb Raider Though I was never much of a gamer You were pretty hot as Mrs Smith Perhaps that’s something I’m still dealing with
Ooooh, Angelina Jolie What you doing to me Ooooh, Angelina Jolie What the hell could it be
If you ever meant a thing to me I really can’t remember what that thing could be
Angelina, Angelina, Angelina….
Kazoo solo!!
Now I don’t know how to end this song So I’ll just sing your name the whole night long Oh, I can’t seem to push you from my brain ‘Cause Angelina, I can hear your name (again and again)
Ooooh, Angelina Jolie (until fade)

Reminds me of The Kinks. Super-catchy chorus. The upbeat jangly acoustic vibe is putting me in a good mood and making me want to sing along. Got my foot tapping too. And then there's the kazoo just to put some positive icing on the cake.... 'Now i don't know how to end this song' ... nice :)
To make one smile when they don't particularly feel like smiling, especially in the middle of a boring and annoying work day while doing boring and annoying work...that is the true mark of a great song. The kazoo killed me. The ending emphasis note brought me back to life and killed me all over again. I love how silly this, but also how fun it is to listen to cause it also sounds good. I also appreciate the production quality you put into this. This is gonna be such a fun and beloved song for so many people - regardless if they ever cared about Angelina Jolie or not (i was indeed crushing hard on her for a long stretch of time back in the day). Its just fun and catchy. And of course, its gonna be stuck in my head so thanks for that. Genuinely loved this.
There's something about the name, Angelina, that is so rock n' roll. I love all the response vocals. When you're given an idea like this you gotta do it. Sometimes it doesn't make any sense. Then the challenge is making it work somehow. Seems like you had fun as the result is quite joyous.
Hell yes harmonies, this song is crazy fun. I love how it's conversational and feels like the best parts of improvised. The guitar sound is really lush and the overall production is really clear. It's a great reminder to not fight what songs want to be. Also, I need a kazoo now. Thanks for that.
I can definitely hear the Paul Simon overtones in this, especially the kazoo or whistle at the end of some lines. This song has that same fun, devil-may-care, party attitude. The song may be a little silly, but it's a lot of fun. In this day and age, a little lightheartedness is more than welcome. Also, your lyrics are a cut above. Anytime you can work a word like "psychotherapist" into a song, you're doing all right. Nice work!
This is such a fun and catchy song and I really dig the Simon and Garfunkel vibes going on. The melody is a proper earworm and that minor chord turn in the chorus is so satisfying.
I love how you leaned into the silliness of the idea and just ran with it. It gives the whole thing this carefree, FAWM magic energy. The build into the kazoo solo is brilliant and the harmonies and production really elevate it beyond just a simple joke concept. Super charming, super infectious, and honestly the kind of tune that just sticks with you in the best way.
I don't think I've noticed that there's something Bolan-y about your voice - or is it the doubletracking? Did T Rex use doubletracking? I'm not sure that's important. It's great. My mind didn't go to that S&G song, it went to Cecilia (which is one of my favourites), just because it has that demented summery repetition thing going on. Very nice indeed.
But really, based on the story of its inception, I suppose this is your Yesterday?
I have no idea how this song idea came up... but it's catchy as hell. and I did not expect that to be so upbeat happy with a kazzoo
I can understand how that would be an ear worm! Such a catchy melody, and as always your harmonies and production elevate the whole thing. That minor chord turnaround in the chorus is so satisfying, and the build before the (sublimely ridiculous) kazoo solo is delightful.
Oh yeh I hear PS sneaking into this one. I think it's really good the way this happened and it's the sort of song that somehow becomes a hit, not less than from the strong delivery and classy production.
So fun! Love that you leaned into your tired brain response of "Angelina Jolie" :) It fits perfect! You are so versitle with your voice, matching this pop style effortlessly. Bravo!
It's so fun and catchy but it also has just so many awesome elements, where to even start? I can't - you know what you've done, and you've gone and passed your earworm on. They do say that's one way of getting rid of them but I speak from experience to say that might be optimistic! Aside from the BNL and Paul Simon, I was even getting a bit of Beatles in some of the chord progression, e.g. "If you ever meant a thing to me". Anyway, amazing.
Been a fan of hers [gulp] since I saw her in her first (?) movie as some troubled girl in a juvenile offender facility of some kind. (I THINK that's what the movie was about--it has been ages...) Anyway--great song! ❤️
Oh, these vocals YESSS! I am a fan. The full production is just awesome, and the KAZOO... epic
You just spin gold…who do you think you are?! Rumpelstilskin?! It’s so catchy but also gets across this feeling of waking up from a dream confused and kinda mad/upset like “what the hell?” That moment between sleep and awake where fantasy and reality are splitting apart—like a peanut butter sandwich or something similar. Great tune, great capturing of a very human experience
Yes can definitely here me and Julio in here, this was fun!
Your therapist is not a Freudian, I see :)
I have a soft spot for the goofy songs during FAWM. It's actually one of the things that makes the whole process enjoyable. Like I have a feeling that most of the time you wouldn't bother finishing off something like this, but here it is and it gives everyone a chuckle.
Plus it has a kazoo. I. mean.
I can totally hear "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard." Super fun piece!
Gosh darn you @davidtaro ! I’m not sure I will be able to write any more songs today because this infectious little melody (and Angelina Jolie) are going to be stuck in my head! What fun! Love all the whimsical silliness!
i never realized how cool her name was until hearing you sing it over and over. your voice sounds different here than i have ever heard it before. this is a goofy goofy goofy song. one that if you included it in your live set could possibly (to your chagrin) become your most requested number.
Love the whistle, tambourine and little asides. Funny perspective to take. Oh, and then the kazoo, the ultimate secret weapon.
Great melody, which is where I believe this started. Thoroughly enjoyed that, big smile on my face…
With that title and the kazoo solo tag, how could I not listen. and, yes, making a virtue of necessity is sometimes the way to go. And the details and their rhymes (Mrs. Smith/dealing with) are choice (along with "what the hell could it be"). But the best part is the chorus -- this is just so much fun.
One of these days I must put a kazoo in one of my tracks. Ha - what a tune! Love the playfulness and the humor. I certainly understand how this track came to mind. I think I’m gonna play this one again before my co-worker starts roaming into my office space to find out what is making me giggle. I’ve also taken notes. I’ve learned something valuable here.
It's a fun tune. I'm definitely getting a Barenaked Ladies vibe. Also the charm of Violent Femmes but with less punk.
[Sneaking into FAWM during a work meeting so can't listen yet, but let me tell you I have SUCH expectations of this. I mean, kazoo solo!!!!]
Prepare to be disappointed...
I was not disappointed! I love the upness of the whole thing - even the intro when one hard panned guitar is followed by another on the other side was super uplifting. Lots of brilliant wee production moments too - the pause and chorus on "whole night long" was just ace.
The kazoo solo was epic.
I can see both sides of the Simon / BNL debate in this song, but tbh it's a win/win as far as I'm concerned. So take that as a double win and rejoice!
Isn’t in funny when that happens. Silly lyrics to create a melody but then no other words work as well. I had one of those this year (Beelzebub, Halloween). I love the wide sound you have from the acoustics. I guess Angelina is going to be haunting my mind today now. The Kazoo is a lovely addition as well. There’s not enough kazoo in modern music. There also aren’t many fade outs these days either. Nice job
Had to be a fade out really to suggest the stupid chorus never actually ends. You're lucky I faded it so quickly, I recorded a lot more go rounds :D
You should have kept it going for at least another 10 minutes ☺️
Great start with L only sound to L+R. Takes me back in time playing Tomb Raider xD. I think i could sing Angelina Jolie all along in the pub, nice!
ha, this is inspired craziness! really well done and sounds like you had lots of fun doing it! (and who knows what it all means, don't worry 'bout it!) great tune and production. (and now I can't get it out of my head either!)
