Lyrics
they grew up on outlaws drank them like whiskey slipped past the lawmen went on the run didn’t pay taxes fought regulations hollered “don’t tread on me” and stockpiled guns
they grew up on outlaws sang about mama breath like kerosene ghosts in the sky bar fights and bank jobs and gun-totin’ showdowns and shooting a man just to watch him die
but then somehow the lines got crossed and the message began to be lost
look at the cowboys they used to be tough now they can’t bend the knee fast enough fragile as snowflakes but cosplaying rough look at the cowboys they used to be tough
they fought tooth and nail for the second amendment because someday a gun might stop tyranny well tyranny’s here now but they didn’t come running in fact, nobody’s seen them where could they be?
look at the cowboys they used to be tough now they can’t lick a boot fast enough play like they’re rugged but they’re marshmallow fluff look at the cowboys they used to be tough

This is excellent, you diagnose the problem with devastating x-ray vision, and there are so many memorable lines here it’s really wonderful. In an alternative universe, this would be a giant country hit and make so many realize what’s happened. Great work.!
Well done. You're threading the needle with the commentary on the hypocrisy in an eloquent way. Love the juxtaposition of the archetypes. Great work.
I'm always amazed when I hear you do a different genre! Love the chorus harmony! Love the story behind the lyrics. Favorite line: 'play like they’re rugged but they’re marshmallow fluff'.
Wow. I don't think this one is going to get you invited to the Opry. What amazing social commentary.
I believe the saying is, "all hat, no cowboy." Great song! Very well produced and song, as always!
Tell it like it is, @carleybaer ! Big talkers, small walkers. Your vocals sound terrific, a classic country tune. Nice work!
Lyrics are right on point and absolutely gorgeous vocals.
Summarizes the state of affairs. They’ve lost all of their creds and turned into whimpering Karens living in fear of anyone and anything. I love a good, biting story song. Great production, wonderful lyrics.
Plain, simple, to the point. About as American as you can get. Them thar lyrics pack quite a punch, and they're pretty darn revealing, too. But maybe the cowboy myth has always been just that. It's not that they just ambled off into the sunset. Now they're hiding in their basements in front of their screens, finding other failure-to-emotionally-thrive men, and spouting their racism, hate, and conspiracy theories - all the while drooling over their guns. Your western vibe, and straight shooting lyrics hit the nail squarely on the head.
Oh, the irony of the whole situation. Gorgeous melody. A country song for our country.
Damn girl these biting lyrics. Amen to all of it, the cognitive dissonance is maddening. I love a straightforward country song calling it like it is. You’ve got such a great sound on the softly harmonized vocals. Really enjoyed this, but it also made me rage 🙃
Oh I love this! This is a modern classic. Beautiful vocals!
Wonderful song. I love the lyrics, they ring so true. I love the lines in the first chorus especially and the myriad references to old outlaw country songs were heart warming. The line about guns protecting from tyranny but tyranny being here and the guns did nothing is also very powerful. One of the strongest songs I have heard this FAWM.
What a beautiful song! Beautifully descriptive writing, excellent super memorable melody, gorgeous singing, phrasing and vocal styling, great flow and a total pleasure to listen to. I can't believe we are here either. Thank goodness for music!
I learned recently that 45% of cowboys were black, mexican or native american. So maybe one day soon, they will all be woke? Lovely metaphor, a travel to the heart of an ideology. Lovely music a true offspring of cowboy songs. "Things ain't was they use to be" melancholy and all that stuff.
