Nothing Ahead In Sight

Challenge: SAWTOOTH MELODYLiner Notes
#synth #liveinstruments #bass #drums Well, this was pretty fun. I was in that place where I didn't know where to begin. I tried on several things, as that is what I do when I don't have anything yet. I decided to map out a structure and do drums first. After I got that done, I really didn't know what else to do and nothing that I tried was producing anything that I found interesting. So, I got into my Arturia Microfreak, which is a super fun synth that I had not used yet this FAWM. Well, that got me going and the vibe completely changed. After some recording some parts, I decided for bass and that was really what was needed! So, in the end I have something that I like but had nothing ahead of me when I started. But, THAT IS the fun and challenge for me. It ended up really satisfying and pleasing--when I thought that the initial action (drum track) wouldn't produce anything initially. So fun. The title comes from the process of coming up with this song, but also has other implications. We just had almost 25 family members over at our house over the weekend to come together after the passing of my dad, @srcoops. Mortality is inevitable, but the togetherness isn't. The title has a lot to do with the fact that we are so lucky to have a family that doesn't have any impending doom or anxiety over what will happen. We know that we will be communicating and working together. It just is..... You never know what quality you have until you actually have to deal with something! Well, we have found out many times over. Another part of this is my main job. We (and many others across our country) are dealing with budget cuts and we just don't know if our jobs are safe....It's out of my control. I don't have anything in sight that I can control.... My wife is going to sing on this one, too! Two in a year!?!? We haven't had that in some time and I'm happy about it. I played: my drums, Arturia MicroFreak in many ways, and my Sterling Subray4 bass

Great to hear some synth from you again! That little bassy melody from the synth around 2:35 was particularly pleasing for my ears. There is a positivity and "free spirit" to this song that lifted my mind and brought me back to happier memories. Nice work!
I like how it all opens up at 0:44 for the first time (and again later, of course), taking pensive synths to drum-driven catharsis.
I like your liner notes: "Mortality is inevitable, but the togetherness isn't." My uncle passed in the past couple months and requested no service. It's weird to not grieve with my family.
So so good! I love the originality of this. It really takes me on a journey. I do love the bass and the drums, great tones there, and then the synths take this to a whole other level of interest and creativity. Bravo!
Ah, so this is going to be a song that your wife sings eventually? Cool! Really enjoyed it. ❤️
This feels great. I'm glad you got something out of your exploration. I think there is something very rewarding about starting and just seeing what happens, even if you have a loose plan, it can reveal things you didn't know you needed. I, too, like the bass and how it really fills out the track, propells it in some ways. The whole thing sounds good, too. Very sorry to hear about @scroops and I hope the hurt is dulled at least a little by all the creative magic happening this FAWM. It feels like you are finding a way to express yourself which is likely the best we can hope for in such a situation.
I really like the feel of this. Like a The Horrors track (circa 2011). The ups and down are really cool and it is just crying out for some vocals. I could have a stab at layering over some vocals if you like? If you send the WAV to [email protected] I can have a go.
lots of cool things going on in all corners of the sound, but it is that delightful melody that carries me through all the textures. and even when the melody is dropped from the mix, i still hear it in my mind's ear.
This is all around really great. It sounds like one of those tracks that was just super fun to record. Really digging all the layering and textures in this.
It sounds like you had fun and that is what its all about! Great drums - yes yes i'm coming late to really appreciaiting them! The synts below forth with real majesty. very cool
Nice! Proggy and cosmic and groovy. I like the variety of synth layers/textures
What a vibe! The drums sound pristine and the part is killer. The synth and bass play so nicely together, and with the drums. I was just thinking about how cool it is that, before you write it, a song is absolutely nothing, and after it's just there. Magic. Feels like you were there too, and knocked it out of the park. Well done!
this is super fun! love the vibe on this one. it has such a great rhythm to it, really easy to get lost in. nice work!
This has an amazing vibe! The MicroFreak (which I'm unfamiliar with) sounds fantastic. I'm very much looking forward to the vocal rendition :)
