Skirmish: Ode to Spring (@ajna1960)

Liner Notes

FAWM 2026 / Song 9 Instrument: soprano koa ukulele tuned high GCEA

WELL THAT WAS ANNOYING OF ME -- I UPLOADED THE WRONG TAKE, in my rush to post this within the hour, and so congratulations if you saw the swearing-blooper one. ;) Correct demo uploaded now.

I started this skirmish with the prompt: Ode to Spring, then turned to my most recent songwriting notebook pages, pulling some lines that seemed to fit.

I recently heard that Western mystic Meister Eckhart, 13th-century philosopher and theologian, said this: “Time is what keeps the light from reaching us." There must be a way to have seasons without time. And what of the seasons in me, no matter the weather? What parts of me are frozen, stuck, flowing, green, dying, fresh?

23 minutes to rough draft lyrics, then tried to find music on my soprano ukulele. Couple of shaky moments on the melody, to get it recorded before the hour was up, but that will smooth with revision.

Lyrics

They come in your dreams The lost ships of winter They grind down the streams With the ghosts that ride them There's a quickening When you stand just beside them They come in your dreams In your dreams

Time keeps the light just out of view The seasons sift inside of you Winter needs a candle Like mystery needs a clue And spring is always new

There's a shivery wake Where the wind breathes you in And your hand will shake Inside your skin For the fire's gone out Or it's nowhere near There's a shivery wake Shivery wake

A frozen pulse of river Waiting for the match to strike A devil to deliver In the exhale of the night Even as we die We will outlive this ice And spring will come again -- Will come again

CHORUS

There's fruit in the flower A kernel in the husk And your heart must break To be one of us Underneath, the green Waits another hour There's fruit in the flower Fruit in the flower

Love the melody, especially in the chorus. Excellent vocal, too.

Thank you very much, Paul. :)

Lovely! Your voice is very theatrical. Also, nice Kamaka.

Thanks so much! I appreciate it -- and I love that little uke; it was a gift. :)

That's one hell of a gift! Then again, I was gifted a vintage Martin baritone several years ago.

@cjk

This is so strong from the beginning to the end. Love the images and the tune. Superb.

Oh, thank you so much! I am happy it worked for you.

So beautiful. Such a wonderful take on the prompt. A pleasure to listen to and to watch.

Thank you very much!

A hopeful song. I like the concepts of seasons with motion replacing the notion of time. Great writing.

Thank you!!

@debs

This is so lovely to listen to, and so polished for a skirmish/one-take! Love the vibrato in your voice.

[pic]

Thank you very much! I needed every second of that hour! 😂

I thought for sure this was in my "Ghost Story" skirmish. It's always great to hear from you.

[pic]

I love a ghost story! Thank you!

[pic]

Ooo, this was a skirmish?? Wow. That's seriously impressive. Love that little uke intro and the playing throughout, it paired well with the melody. You always have this ability to go places I don't expect melodically but make it work so well. The chorus is really strong, the candle and clue comparison is particularly satisfying. 💚

Thank you very much — that couplet got revised, and I’m glad it worked for you.

Beautiful song. I really liked the lyrics “The seasons sift inside of you.” An apt metaphor for time’s passing.

I appreciate you taking the time to listen. Thank you.

@mjv

Love the lyric concept and the idea of seasons inside of us, nice word choices to fit the overall theme for the prompt

Thanks very much for giving it a listen!
