Liner Notes

I'm really happy about this song's melody ideas. More 'pop-like' than my usual stuff and is something I'm trying to do. The lyric came from my friend Warren, a non-FAWMer but definitely a collaborator on this piece. It's about a neighbor who we all call the mayor because he's so inclusive, community-building, and makes a point of knowing everybody. Good guy. I think this is Lydian mode although I haven't analyzed, just it starts on an Eb major chord and is in key of Bb. So Modal Challenge points! Woohoo!

Lyrics

Cheers to the Mayor, Cheers to the Mayor, Cheers to the Mayor of Chamberlain He’s going out tonight With his hair combed nice, his robes all shiny bright.

Ya Cheers to the Mayor, Cheers to the Mayor, the councillors all genuflect As they enter his chateau Not in respect but the doorway is so low!

The party’s on dusk to dawn, game they never end Please take care to close the door we don’t want to offend!

Everybody welcome, everybody welcome, everybody to Chamberlain says the Mayor with a smile Over there’s the snacks, please single file

There’s entertainment, such entertainment, stimulating entertainment we hope the home team wins when they do we’ll all have massive grins

The Mayor’s wife’s so lovely nice she asks us to come in The happy little dog say ‘Arf, pet me on the chin!’

Break

Cheers to the Mayor, Cheers to the Mayor, Cheers to the Mayor of Chamberlain He’s going out tonight Everybody’s welcome. Such a happy sight!

The Mayor sounds like a good person to know; this is a lovely tribute. You going to play it for him?

Yes! See below...dark humor....

lovely tribute, upbeat and i really like the melody, reminds me of the Divine Comedy. Cool song

How fun! I love the guitar sound but I above all love your neighbor, he sounds like a treat! What a great tribute.

Mad guitar playing. And fun song that keeps everything from being serious lyrically. Good work.

“Not in respect but the doorway is so low!” Is a delightful line and I also love the stanza about wife and dog — it’s even more fun knowing it’s based on a real person in your neighborhood. Makes me feel cheery. Delightful melody, too — those leaps up really work for me. Boisterous rhythm on the guitar. All things are working right here!

This is such a fun song. Will you be sharing it with The Mayor?

[pic]

Yes! I hope he likes it and doesn't get embarrassed and sad and hang himself. That would be awkward! I can't see it, but I've misjudged before.

Very cool jaunty jazzy feel. And cheers on tackling something in Eb, I did that yesterday with a skirmish song as well just to force myself to work in a key I don't usually use. This tune dances around some really unexpected chords but they really work in context. Nice!
