When the small things in life are the ones that matter the most. Like pancakes. Then again, maybe the pancakes point to a bigger picture. #folk #acoustic #singersongwriter
Lyrics
The moon is a pancake Hangin' in the sky There just above the lake But I can't touch it if I try Yeah the moon is a pancake Well it's a pancake moon I know she's gonna bring me Some delicious pancakes soon
It's a pancake moon
She'll take a pinch of cinnamon And a spread of honey too She gives me one and it's already gone And then she brings me two The moon is a pancake Such a pretty sight Glowing there upon my plate Served with coffee black as night
It's a pancake moon
The moon is a pancake And how she flips it 'round And then she hands it over Crisp and golden brown When she makes me pancakes I feel gratitude and love Stronger than a handshake As peaceful as a dove
It's a pancake moon
The moon is a pancake Hangs in the sky The moon is a keepsake It ain't gonna die

I love this so much!! The way you just gently expand the metaphor over that dreamy groove - sublime.
Thought I'd come and get me some more traditional OLJ fare. And what delicious fare it is too. It really is a mystery to me how you're not a household name, you sound so damn classy. Love the tuneful humming on this one. And the way you tease out that delightful conflation of the moon and the pancakes being prepared by a lover. Trouble is, now I'm hungry.
Pancakes, yes, definitely. Sounds so nice (just like pancakes) and who wouldn't want a love song about pancakes? That was lovely.
Love the wordplay, the fs guitar is so perfect and with your vocals- works so well, love the trad folk sound. Beautiful song - beautifully performed. Bravo!
man. the calming effect that came over me the second the song started. Nicely done. The guitar sounds so nice and your finger picking so great.
If there was a skirmish about "pancake" and "moon" I would have passed because how could something great come from those? You've proven me wrong. And you've written such a pretty new song. And also now I want pancakes. I love your soft and sincere vocals and the skillful way you pick the guitar. I love the tender melody you've composed. I love that this is a love song! Seriously excellent songwriting and performance!
Your voice, playing and lyrics bring a smile to my face.
Love the picking and your voice is like a warm hug. Excellent song! I have to start checking out your other stuff too. This is top notch!
This is so pretty! I love the story you manage to tell with this simple idea and it becomes a love song. You vocals are really lovely. Is it in a higher register than usual? Your vocal sounds lighter somehow? Great finger picking as always. Really lovely and I nice way to start my day.
i don't know what it is about the opening line but you sounded like Dylan and that's not a bad thing. but your own voice is it's own awesome stand-alone thing that never needs comparison. besides that...i love that old lost john has a song about a pancake moon. my 2025 and 2026 self needs more of this. just beautiful in it's simplicity.
Man, the vocal delivery and guitar groove are a perfect match here. (Also, a totally kickass production job; sounds like a favorite LP from 1975.). Fovorite couplet: "Stronger than a handshake / As peaceful as a dove."
FAWMs egna spelare är helt omöjlig här i Indien och det hoppar och bryter alldeles för mycket. Trots det så är det ljuva toner jag hör och efter att ha njutit en citronpannkaka idag så kom denna nästa som en ljuvlig dessert. Tack 🙏
Funkar den här länken bättre? https://oldlostjohn.com/track/4651710/pancake-moon
Obvs the fingerpicking, your voice, and the lovely metaphor.
An almost quibble: rhyming "to" with "two" . . . but then you give us "coffee black as night" IN A SONG ABOUT THE MOON and I think, awwwww, give it to him.
Lovely lovely. So glad I got to hear this today.
My doughnut spice whole wheat pancakes are the best.
Yeah the to/two rhyme bothers me a bit, but it'll do for now. Actually, I like my coffee with a little milk, but I had to modify the truth for the sake of the song.
a brilliant example of the mundane relecting the mysteries of the eternal. the guitar and vocals create such a soothing pilow for contemplation. i havent heard such thought out and well written lyrics since the cowboy buddah days of townes van zant.
Oh thanks a lot Bill, that's quite a compliment!
I love making pancakes... nice pickin'.
Ah the most important thing is working out the most important thing! maybe it is a pancake! Lovely guitar and vocal as always!
Got what I came hear for…Always enjoy your guitar playing…Just superb. Lyrically, I’m a big fan of pancakes so this song hits just right. I make some killer pancakes and I always mix in some love. They’re fun that way. My favorite line is “ Glowing there upon my plate Served with coffee black as night”.
Lovely guitar playing, warm and cozy for talking about things like moons and pancakes. I really love the chord progression during your “mmm mmm” parts. Vocal delivery is great with a little bit of crackly edge and whisper, very nice!
Hi, a beautiful opener to this season of FAWM. An ethereal, celestial breakfast that speaks of things much deeper than a pancake
For me this one carried a whole lifetime inside it. The first verse was a child making sense of the world. Then the child grew up but still carried this long ago association into love, and then towards mortality and the comfort in knowing the world will persist. Beautiful playing and singing and writing.
