Abacadabra

Liner Notes

Wanted to get on the board early this FAWM and thought it would be fun to start with an instrumental while waiting for lyrical inspiration. The bass challenge also sounded like a fun one.

This track uses only my Yamaha 5-string bass. Rondo form (ABACABA inspired the title). Bit of Dream Theater (Yste Jam) influence, maybe?

This was great in the headphones I was wearing while listening. I liked quirkiness of the start but also the section that started before a minute -- how different the vibe is there, and then how it builds again after 20-30 seconds. Cool composition!

Oh fun! I really like the idea of the bass challenge and you've really nailed it here. Cool to hear the variety of sounds you can get from it. :)

Hell ya, love it! Wonderful groove and harmonies. I definitely hear some Dream Theatre and Les Claypool in hear. I'm also a bass player based (bassed) in the bay area. Would love to collab!

That's most interesting, unusual bass solo I've ever heard!! Stanly Clark (my all time favorite bass player) level stuff. Love the transitions!! great composition...great playing!!

BIg boomy bottoms, but one of the top fawm-tracks that i have listen to this far.Well done!

Very cool! I was intrigued to hear what you would come up with the bass challenge. Pure bass magic!!

When I read about the bass challenge my mind immediately went to Spinal Tap's "Big Bottom" so I'm delighted to see that other people had a far more refined and nuanced response to the prompt. Great fun, though I'd be tempted to notch out some of the boominess at around 150 Hz.

Thanks! I'm terrible at EQ/mixing, and did literally nothing, tone-wise on this than record the parts and hit export, but I genuinely appreciate the insight as it's an area where I want to improve my ears/skills.

This. Sounds. Fantastic! Love your tone and clarity. Not to mention your playing's on point! Great job incorporating the slapping to give it distinct texture and rhythm.

Great to see you back this year! Amazing bass playing, and a really cool vibe. Agree that a full band version would be interesting.

I love this groove. Why does give me some SOAD meets Tool vibes? As much its fun to work with the bass, I can imagine this song blowing up in the chorus with a drumset. Definitely a keeper

Probably the polyrhythms and general rhythmic weirdness ;) Thanks, Nadine!

This is great! Love me some bass, and yours has been surprisingly versatile. Quality songwriting to boot. 😀

I love the twists and turns this piece takes...the electric bass too often gets overlooked as a medium of polyphonic composition and this is a nice showcase of this concept!

This is a cool composition. Love those harmonizing "trills" on the bass.

I know the challenge was to stick just to bass, but I think this would be rad to hear a version with drums. There is a cool groove to it.

Great job!

I was thinking this would be good for a full band treatment! Would make some of the arranging easier.
