Devotion & Desire
Skirmish: Trapped (@alyxanderjames) Challenge: SEASONS CHANGELiner Notes
Started writing this yesterday but could not for the life of me figure out music to go with the lyrics I had. Picked it up again this morning, simplified the lyrics, and managed to figure out some music. I don't know if this one's a keeper but I like it conceptually, at least.
Lyrics
It's still too hot for September I hope autumn's on its way It's been a strange sort of summer Full of grief and joy and rage And days I can't help thinking Sometimes safety is a cage
This little voice keeps telling me To set my life on fire It's not that I'm ungrateful Maybe I'm just tired Of something missing, misaligned Between devotion and desire
I'm ready to wear sweaters And remember that I'm safe As coziness descends And the seasons start to change But I still wonder whether Sometimes safety is a cage
This little voice keeps telling me To set my life on fire It's not that I'm ungrateful Maybe I'm just tired Of something missing, misaligned Between devotion and desire
I keep falling Hard and fast Life keeps changing Nothing lasts Has this chapter Reached its final page Why does safety Feel like a cage
This little voice keeps telling me To set my life on fire It's not that I'm ungrateful Maybe I'm just tired Of something missing, misaligned Between devotion and desire

Great lyrics! I love the line “set my life on fire.” I think the melody you chose works well too!!
Oh, that chorus hits hard. Love these chords and this repeated line in particular:
Sometimes safety is a cage
I like how it ends unresolved, too. Wonderful work!
Oh btw my "trapped" song has a demo now!
I feel so much of this. These lyrics hit a lot of emotional resonances, and unite them into a sense of deeper self-understanding. There's warmth as well as churning in this guitar which work really well with your vocals. Also, holy moly the note on 'cage' beautiful!
You're definitely on to something very good here.... you've illustrated the dilemma of the protaganist very well, and the music and lyric really fit well together. -that 'safety feels like a cage' line is very well said. (maybe that should be the title?)
So many excellent lyrics here “safety is a cage”…”set my life on fire”…”misaligned between devotion and desire”… The chord shift at “cage” brings that line out and elevates it to shine. I love the pensive emotion wrapped up in this, and I know it’s not about me but I feel like these words could be about my own journey. Great song!
Really beautiful and captivating lyrics and melody. You are good at capturing your experiences through song.
