Liner Notes

As the anniversary of 9/11 gets closer I think a lot about the letter I found in storage recently that my 11-year-old self wrote on that day. I was scared and confused and not really grasping yet how big it was. Sometimes I still feel that way.

Lyrics

Good god, please bless the bones Of the candle I lit for the angels and ghosts It's a miracle you ever let me go

By your rod I am guided to shore Of my own desolate paradise in the storm It's the only America I know

So if you ever get the letter I wrote back when I didn't know better

It's all right, it's only a sword in my side I guess I should just kill my pride as your memories Conveniently fade away Is it my time or your glorious ending I might just be transcending Paid more than my dues in the grave In the land of the greed and the home of the saved

Holy fire, eleven years old Mama told me to hush, turned on the radio And the music was just the hum of war

I'm tired of the rumble of hate Of the counterfeit passes through the pearly gates And you say it's not America no more

But if you ever get the letter I wrote back when I didn't know better

It's all right, it's only a sword in my side I guess I should just kill my pride as your memories Conveniently fade away Is it my time or your glorious ending I might just be transcending Paid more than my dues in the grave In the land of the greed and the home of the saved

Learned my lesson, teacher From unholy preachers

It's all right, it's only a sword in my side I guess I should just kill my pride as your memories Conveniently fade away Is it my time or your glorious ending I might just be transcending Paid more than my dues in the grave In the land of the greed and the home of the saved

What a phenomenal melody! Very poignant lyrics and solid production. You have a BEAUTIFUL voice! 25 years is wild to consider. Wow!

I like kind of minimalistic production of this song. Land of the greed... well said.

Powerful writing, arranging and singing, Robyn. I have huge admiration!

Phew, these melodies are so good! Love the big leaps. Great take on the subject.

25 years...that makes me feel my age.

Sometimes you write a song and you think to yourself, "Yeah. That's it. That's what I wanted." I dearly hope you have that feeling about this one, because ooof... 💯

I was drifting off to sleep while listening - forgot it was Fawm and though it was radio —and I though I must Shazam this so I know what it is and I can buy it

This is so good! Really powerful lyrics, and catchy hooks, and the whole thing is just a banger. Nice work!

That intro is so good. Helps set the stage perfectly. Your vocal bends in the chorus really make this whole thing shine. This is awesome.

i love the way you bend forms to fit your own means of expression. the internal structures keep the listener rooted to the melodies and lyrics while your personal expressiveness keeps us hinged upon where each line will take us. having such a firm grasp on traditional structure and the intelligence and emotion to go your own way with it results in a song that is both immediately comprehensible yet filled with unusual flips and turns. for some time after listening i was trying to rememer the artist you reminded me of. i just couldnt remember her name and was surprised that she did not appear on any of the lists of alt-folk women singers of the 1990's. and finally i found mention of her. Ani DiFranco.

That is high praise, thanks, Bill! :D

@sbs

The title says it all! I couldn’t resist and had to listen. Nicely done! Great combo of lyrics, vocals and percussive production.

Woah, you nailed the evangelical imagery here. Definitely felt this one deep. Your vocal leaps and harmonies in the chorus are so good, and they really emphasize the anguish. I can't pick out just a few pieces of this, I love it all, it so well put together and I'm immediately with you in that world of reflecting on a past version of myself that it's hard to believe existed.

Loving that bass sound, and I like what you did with the title/hook line. So many hard hitting lines, in fact - memories conveniently fade away, paid more than my dues in the grave, ...

[pic]

That bassline alone contains so much weight, and then you put these great, heavy, weary words on it.

Learned my lesson, teacher From unholy preachers It's all right, it's only a sword in my side I guess I should just kill my pride as your memories Conveniently fade away

Goddamn.

Wow. I'm in awe with this! So incredibly powerful and good!

"I'm tired of the rumble of hate Of the counterfeit passes through the pearly gates"

A BAR. This made me think of the hateful people we see being honoured after their deaths. I won't name names but I know we can think of at least one from around a year ago. Powerful stuff. Rock on.

Oh yup monster bass so cool! Deep dark and has that real story feel! What an excellent song!

That bass is divine. Heavy times. Great harmonies too. Well done.
