Liner Notes

Another fabulous percussion loop from @nahlej381 here (thanks dude!). I sang a variety of random words over it, which coalesced around the phrase 'too many fires'. In my head, these are fires inside us rather than literal fires, although I appreciate there are too many of those around at the moment as well. #bluesy #indierock #choral #percussion

Lyrics

Too many fires in this place Too many fires, more than I can trace Too many fires you can see from outer space Too many fires in this place

Too many fires in the hold Too many fires spread a hundredfold Too many fires out of our control Too many fires in the hold

Ooooh… there’s too many Too many fires

Too many fires in my heart Too many fires keeping us apart Too many fires burning from the start Too many fires in my heart

And everybody thinks you’re crazy Tells you just to count to ten Can’t you see you’re maybe driving me right round the bend And here I go again

Ooooh… there’s too many Too many fires Ooooh… there’s too many Too many fires

Wow, this all works: the production, lyrics, vocals, instrumentation. And I love a bridge that pops and also enhances what comes next.

Fab - you set the world alight there -really strong lyric and very topical. The way verse two opens out is wonderful. Great little touch with the reversed effect crescendoing into the third verse. And the triplets in the first phrase of the guitar solo - hmmmmmm nice. You just need to convince your better half that you need to move in an entire gospel choir to the basement so they can ‘help with rent’

Well this is awesome. Gosh damn. The world you've built with the layers of instruments and vocals are such a treat for the ears.

Listening again. Do you know the album "Photograph Smile" by Julian Lennon? This song brings that album to mind, partly because the lead single, "Day After Day" does a similar walk down from C to Fm. But it's more than that. There's a moodiness and a vibe here that feels like it would fit right in. Anyway, check it out. Whether you agree with my comparison or not, it's a great album and well worth a listen. 🙂

Hey there. Started listening to the album this morning - some really cool stuff on there (a few fillers too!), scary how similar he sounds to his dad in certain moments. Thanks for the recommend dude!

This is awesome. It's mining George Harrison in the best way. I'm not sure I would have paid as much attention to the percussion without the notes. Not because it's not super cool, but because it's never trying to do too much or doing anything to disrupt the flow. I'm glad I did pay more attention because there are some really cool things going on, the groove, the accents, it's all very slick.

I'm blown away at where you took "too many fires". It went from a pretty interesting ad lib to what feels like a piercing commentary on the human condition. Incredible. The music bed nails the vibe perfectly. The chords, the arrangement, the vox FX at the start, the sweeping flourish before the second verse. I was already jealous as all get up before hitting the solo and "ooh" chorus.

Putting this on your next album should be the easiest decision made in the process. Jaw dropping stuff here.

Ah, thanks Justin, really appreciate the detailed and very kind notes. Any comment that starts with a George Harrison comparison is always going to be well received!

Great bluesy feel and the vocals really work here. Nice job! Great collab.

Possibly MY FAVORITE 5/9 SONG OF ALL for September! Great, great collaboration, you two! Awesome music and one of David's best ever vocals! ❤️

i love a ballad with a blues foundation. saint james infirmary is one of the best, and this takes me to the world where songs like this are born. nahlej's percussion has set a lot of firesthat ignite david's soulful vocals and those guitar solos,,,,,,what can i say? this collaboration is out of this world, and im flying along with it.

It's too late at night, so I just sat back and enjoyed. Well done!

I still have that Burdon feel on my mind ( dont get me misunderstood). Ive run out of words, just enjoying the ride!

Sounds great!

wow this is fantastic, great lyric, great music , rhythm, and performance, and of course that production is so compelling and enveloping.... great work all around!

Sounds so good guys! That pause at 1:32 is sooo nice, makes for such a nice transition back to the top. Catching a Moby vibe, then a Beatles-esque bridge. Vocals from top to bottom are A+ top-notch. And can I ever relate to the "too many fires" sentiment. I loved listening to your track!

@sbs

Super cool percussion loop. Love the vocals sung over it. And then out of nowhere the guitar kicks in. (That part reminds me of Octupus’s Garden). Thanks for the joy of listening!
