Liner Notes

I've been wrestling with a bit of a gnarly wave of depression for the last week or so. As these things do, it's ebbed and flowed day by day, and today I felt just detached enough from it to write about it.

I knew for the #FoundSounds challenge that I wanted to use this little clip of blue jays calling from my walk with my dog last week. And then I got a lyrical snippet in my head from the card that @wylddandelyon pulled for me for the #MagicOracle challenge, "Underworld Dreams," and as I kept writing, I realized they were destined for the same song. (I've never played MTG -- it's a rabbit hole I haven't let myself explore yet, because I know I'll be sucked in immediately lol -- and this was a fun way to engage with it!) I wish the voice memo was a little cleaner, but that was my tenth take and my voice was starting to be uncooperative, so I let it be this one. Guitar is tuned DADAAD, which has become one of my favorite tunings to play in. All in all I like how this one turned out!

Update 9/9 -- I've re-recorded a better demo of this and put it up on Bandcamp under a new title. It'll also be available on streaming services over the next couple of days. This has turned into one of my favorite things I've written all year!

Lyrics

I'm carrying something That I can't release The familiar weight Is starting to smother me I feel myself sink In unavoidable gravity

I walk the dog And listen for blue jays And keep writing songs And looking for a way To dream myself out Of this Underworld I've found That I'm in

I'm in a fog The light's fading fast Don't know how much longer My strength will last But I won't be answered If I never ask

I walk the dog And listen for blue jays And keep writing songs And looking for a way To dream myself out Of this Underworld I've found

I walk the dog And listen for blue jays And keep writing songs And looking for a way To dream myself out Of this Underworld I've found That I'm in

Oh friend, this is spectacular and I hope you don't mind that I downloaded it because the feels went straight to my heart. These are my favourite kind of lyrics - they say so much so simply - and the music, oh my gosh. Every choice you've made about this is perfect. So many of songs on this topic get loud and lash out and you've just kept it so quiet... and the birds, oof. Thank you for sharing this with us (and this take specifically because it's great). Wishing you more ebbing days and all of the birds.

Thank you so much! I don't mind you downloading at all -- I also just uploaded a better demo to Bandcamp, there's a link in the updated liner notes for this song if you're interested. :)

Very sorry to hear about your situation. It does help to write about the feelings. Beautiful idea and song. Tender and truly special.

those beautiful bird calls - they're saying something, what is it? I feel like you've really encapsulated the whole vibe of a contemplative walk. You don't say it outright, but by encouraging us to "listen for blue jays", it's encouraging us to ditch the headphones that are everywhere, both pleasing us with our own music choices, but making us miss other beautiful sounds. I love the line "looking for a way to dream myself out of this underworld I've found"

Hi Jays! The way you put experiences into words is one of my favourite things. The idea of dreaming myself out of the Underworld is just lovely. That first verse encapsulates many experiences I have with depression too. It's beautifully put. Hugs

That tuning works well for your style of vocal! Very gentle and thoughtful! always striving for the light!

This is so tender and lovely. Thank goodness for dogs who force us outside!

Oh, I really like this! The words and guitar are lovely. Your voice sounded great, totally suited to the emotions of this song. The only change I'd make, if I had the arcane techie skills, would be to replace the guitar squeaks with more bluejay calls. The birdsong sounds lovely, and somehow adds a little hope to the lyrics.

I got new external speakers delivered today, and your song was my test song. So pretty! A good song to inaugurate new equipment. Thank you.

Love the found sounds, you sound great in this tuning! I really like “I won’t be answered if I never ask”

Love me the sound of birds in a song, I really like the line "To dream myself out / Of this Underworld I've found", it's relatable and poetic, I feel almost anyone is dreaming of better things, and in doing so we all start to believe the world is far worse than it is, so yeah, take your mind off things and experience some nature might indeed be a the place to think of something else or keep musing on that.
