Stepping Out

Skirmish: Stepping out (@madvikins)Liner Notes
Written for @madvikins's skirmish "stepping out". The first thing that came to mind was that cliche of a father stepping out to buy milk. He made me think about how with my own father that the last day I saw him was just like any other day.
I like when lyrics that come out surprise me. The image of a scented Glad trash bag made me smile.
I'd written the lyrics but I had a gathering of songwriter. Friends where we were sharing works in progress. There's a piano there and I just plunked out some cores and made up the song pretty much on the spot.
Lyrics
When you stepped out that door Crossed the moss to your car How could I have ever known That blood and bone were suggestions?
Big Man Hides his head in the sand Digging up seaglass To see between cracks If only to catch a glance Of the past
A ballpoint note in the $5 card Stranger writes, “I love you, son” Tossed in the trash Tied up in a scented Glad bag Heaved in the dumpster
If these hearts are handbuilt How many lovenotes fill the landfill? Torn in half by jilted lovers Hallmark petals blown about And cluster in the gutter
When I pull back the vines To read between the lines Tossed in the trash Tied up in a scented Glad bag Nothing I can’t leave behind

Great vocal + piano. Love some of the jazziness in there. And the voice is kinda Jamie Cullum (love him!). Great imagery...I can smell that Glad bag (which as an aside, I think smell grosser than most trash ever does!)
Emotional, nice piece. Lovely vocals and piano playing! I’m sorry about your own dad stepping out. :(
