Liner Notes
This is Tape 4 from the Annual 4-Track Cassette Challenge - The tape was recorded one track at a time in the order below:
- @burr - acoustic guitar
- @eargoggle - standup bass and vocal (and lyric)
- @guatecoop - slide electric guitar
- @zecoop - drums
ZeCoop: I was thinking about a lot of different things for this one, as the last person. First off, I really liked the boom/chick click track Burr had put on and wanted to keep it, so I had big plans to bounce and add BGV and a solo... but I stink at solos and couldn't set up a bounce mix I felt would be good. So, I replaced the click with a drum track and am really happy with that. I think it gives more variation than the static click track would have. I had a great track to work with - the three before me really wrote a fantastic song!
Burr: really pleased with how this one turned out! when you start a tape you never know what direction it will go, and you even forget what you did! i love the sonic textures and dynamics choices you all made. lyrics really fit the vibe, too.
Eargoggle: Wow, just wow, hearing this - what? 3 weeks after I wrote something, recorded it, and rushed off to the post office with it? Burr gave me a great start to a song so all I had to do was fill in the verses and choruses and send it off...but something made me want to record bass AND vocals on the same track, at the same time, you know, old school-like, so I did that. Came out great!
Guatecoop: Yeah, this one had a vibe right off when I listened to it. The crazy thing was that the click track ALSO had a big part in the song that I just didn't want to take away. Tried banjo, electric guitar, and keys.... SO, WHAT DO I DO!?! Slide! Great Song. I am so grateful to have this experience!
Lyrics
Colors that I know that always fade so fast Like love that never lasts, drains away the soul
Looks like a photograph, heaven help me Your touch is like a flask that you drip on me Always hurts to ask
The pain it only grows until I see you smile Feels like I never know but only for a while
You’re like a phonograph, you comfort me so Can I spin you round the past, before you let go It always hurts to ask

This is all over the plae in all the best ways. It's so big, it's hard to imagine that it's only four tracks. What a great song, and the bass is just a treat.
I love the slide guitar against the bass. Really nice feel to that
These are some killer lyrics, but I was particularly taken by the last stanza. Fantastic, clever lines there. Really love the vocal tone and the metaphor in the lyrics. This whole piece has a great structure and is really tonally pleasing. This is what I've been looking for whenever I look for "Alt-Country." That guitar sound is just gritty enough to be exciting while being really pleasant to listen to, and the upright "wah" is thumping this along beautifully. Drums nailed the western shuffle for me. Great work all!
Amazing instrumental mix and the vocal and lyrics really fit well. What's the name of your band gonna be?
Great to see a picture of the process. I could have never guessed how this song was recorded because it sounds very consistent. Like you're a real band playing the instruments in the same room
sounds amazing. such a great sonic palette. "can i spin you round the past" - epic line.
I second the road-trip song comment... the perfect combination of energetic yet relaxed. Has a real easy-going feel with the acoustic bed, jangly slide and nice thumpy bass. Cheerful counterpoint to the bittersweet lyrics. Good call on those drums. Really ties the song together 😁
The drums was definitely a good choice with the slide and the double bass. I like the standup being kind of a lead instrument here. this is right in my wheelhouse, great work all!
This is awesome! I love the interplay between guitars, bass, and vocals, it's so rich harmonically... and good call on the drums, John, it really elevates everything. Must be hard to add drums once everything is already settled like in this song. So good, listened a few times!
I like how jangly this is. It contrasts nice with the thumping bass. Makes me think of a road trip song for some reason. Nice job!
This whole thing has a delightful rhythm and jammy band feel. The standup bass sounds so great on tape, just so warm and popping.
Yo. This is fantastic yall! That stand up bass! Those drums! Everything! What a perfect FAWM tune!
