Well, we were in #Egypt. #travel #pyramids #nile_cruise #comedy This is intended to be fast patter with a drunken chorus. It'll hafta be, to keep it short! Not set yet.

We did... Egypt from the bottom to the top of the Nile, But other than their mummies, never saw a crocodile 15,000 fishermen above Aswan Dam So even there the crocodiles stay mum, if they can.

V1 We gawked at Pompey’s Pillar (an error in translation, Poor Publius, it should be his name on the station). And wandered down and down through Alexandria’s catacombs, Where nobles AND their horses went (don’t know about the grooms)

Getting back to Cairo from Pompey was well done, Heading up the highway dodging driving at the ton! The pyramids, they snuck us in, on a private tour! (Even though they didn’t know we’d been there long before)

V2 We shifted base to Luxor, a cruise ship leaving soon, But first we were inveigled to go up in a balloon! With forty more of other loonies dancing in a ring, And landing in a cane crop near the Valley of the Kings.

And there we start the temple round, Hatshepsut the first, And tombs and tombs of kings all carved in a colour burst, And Karnak with its sphinxes and hypostyle hall, And Luxor with its temple, church and mosque, we saw them all.

V3 Cruising up to Edfu and on to Kom Ombo Where the crocodilian mummies are all lined up in a row, And Philae up at Aswan, and the High Dam’s modern line, Then miles of howling desert, to the Abu Simbel shrine.

To our cruise ship we were lightered, for some food and longed-for sleep Above the land of Nubia, drowned, silent in the deep. Then back up north we cruised, salvaged temples, tombs and that, But we’d lost our concentration and started losing track.

That sounds like quite the adventure! Are you sure you saw enough temples?

I've been reading Algernon Blackwood's supernatural fiction lately; the man was completely obsessed with Ancient Egypt and reading this is evoking many of his weird tales. Back when he was writing (in the first decade or so of the 20th century) Egypt was remote and exotically strange; I wonder what he would have made of cruise ships rocking up and discharging hordes of tourists there en masse...
