It's All Decay

My sweetie was talking about plucked instruments and said, "It's all decay." I said, "That's a song!" Three years later, here it is.
My sweetie didn't just provide the title; she also picked up a violin after a pause of 60 years and spent hours coming up with what you hear here. Marilyn, thank you for your courage and collaboration.
I also want to thank my brother Ross who three months ago, when he knew he was dying, kindly gave me a Fender Jazz bass. This is the first time I've played it (or any bass). He was, if possible, even more crazy about music than I am, and a real bass player to boot. I hope he would have liked this song.
Lyrics
Hand off the fretboard Bow off the strings So what’s this thing that still rings?
. It’s all decay . It’s all decay . But there are overtones that fill the room when we no longer play
That sun has left town Now comes the night So how’s the light still so bright?
. It’s all decay . It’s all decay . But there are cottontails discernible beyond the end of day
Car quits the driveway Taillights disappear So why’s it clear you’re still here?
. It’s all decay . It’s all decay . But there’s a constancy that holds our hearts while you must be away
It’s all, it’s all It’s all decay It’s all, it’s all It’s all decay Decay

Dang this is great. Love the melody. Love the concept! Great piece of art.
More light for the night: the moon, lightning, and billions and billions of stars :)
Nice song! Cool lyrics. Lovely instruments. Yay, Marilyn! Yay, Eric! RIP, Ross, and thank you so much.
excellent examples of the beauty of decay. and what a violin solo! wow.
That chorus has a bleak message, but the song turns it into something hopeful and uplifting. I wouldn't have believed you'd never played bass before if you hadn't said so in the liner notes. It's a lovely arrangement!
You have a really compelling feel for melody (and harmony!). This is such a catchy delight. I thought you might be talking about the human situation more broadly, and maybe you are. I love the ending so much. I think I'm going to be singing that refrain for a little while :)
