Liner Notes

#punk #swing #needscollab I'm hesitant to call this a punk song. But if Iggy Pop's The Passenger and Richard Hell's Blank Generation are punk songs, this one is too. I would love for Richard and the boys to play this one. He could write some more lyrics, as well.

If you want to write some lyrics, I would be delighted. The line about painting an angel is from from the realist painter Gustave Courbet. Assuming you do want to write lyrics, what would we be trying to say? Would you know an angel if you saw one--if one blasted its trumpet right in your face and told you to stop your mewling and heel-dragging and get on with your tiny little life? An angel is a holy messenger. Well, what if this this song were the angel--right here, right now, what would you do? Paint it for me! That's a lot to say in a handful of words. We might have to speak in tongues to get it done. There, I've shown you the angel...

Lyrics

You asked for an angel I didn't think you were sincere But here one comes You said, "Show me and angel and I'll paint it for you" Well, watch out Here one comes

We go until we’re done Singing Not here Not now Not like this We go until we're done... You said, "Show me an angel and I'll paint you one"

Well, here one is Your expectations notwithstanding Right now, here one is

We go until we’re done Singing Not here Not now Not like this We go until we're done I've shown you an angel Now paint me one

(If this doesn't make sense, what are angels for?)

Possible words: I am the messanger Every day there’s a setting sun Sing it: right here, right now, just like this You can’t stop until you’re done Sing it: right now...

Take a segment And cut some more Take it down to the point where the point is all And the blast of the clarion call is the point where no thought holds you in its thrall

Yes - almost a little Stray Cats vibe. It's swinging and has the ethos that only Fresh Spotless Youth can pull off.

Swing punk is now totally a thing, now that I’ve listened to this song!

There are definitely some aggressive undertones in this song. I was anticipating some harder guitars and more intense vocals around the 1:11 mark. Nice groove on this one, btw.

I don't care what kind of music this is. It's fun and bouncy and intriguing and clever and kind of in your face. Love it

@mhol

A little bit Iggy pop but also a little bit lou reed, this song got me grooving, great work!

I really, really like the chord progression on "Show me an angel and I'll paint you one". The way it feels unresolved but inviting.

Lyrics that came to me during a relisten:

hold a rock call a friend don't let worry be the end varnished thoughts and burning minds see any thread can paralyze just try just try

artistry is collaboration the canvas made of warp and weft ancestors to next generations as long as you're here there's time there's time

and stitches left

This is lovely. I've had those opening lines in my head a lot lately: hold a rock...call a friend. A little mantra

Last year I organized a community event where we welcomed everyone with a little goodybag with the programme, a pen, and a rock. Mostly pebbles from my personal collection as I'm in the habit of picking up a rock or two when I go for a walk. And it was one of the biggest points of feedback: "I love my rock. It was so nice to just have a rock in my pocket to hold when I felt unsure of myself or wanted to fidget!"

Rocks can hold a surprising amount of space for us. So, yes. If I were to appear as an angel, my divine instruction would be to spend more time with rocks and friends :>

Great job on these lyrics--and I enjoy your vocal treatment throughout this! Terrific! ❤️

I love this! In my late teens I used to sort my music in three piles: punk in a broader sense (biggest pile), punk in a narrower sense (slightly smaller pile) and non-punk (tiny pile). So this would have joined the big pile, because it's not clearly not punk. Maybe it's because it does remind me of Iggy Pop, and I liked Iggy Pop in a not non-punk-way. But maybe now I like him in a non-punk way, and it doesn't really matter anyway. Sooo. The music is really catchy and energetic and improved my mood immediately. And I like the idea of someone grabbing an angel by the scruff of the neck and triumphantly dragging them to M. Courbet. The angel would probably get quite annoyed.

Definitiely a punk-ier vibe and energy, in some of the vocals too. But unmistakeably your style in delivery and the lyrics, and always so damned catchy and sort of perfectly rounded, nothing unnecessary. Sounds great when you doubletrack your voice on "Show me an angel..", you should do that more often! (not should, but it's just so effective and powerful I think).

OMG i saw Richard Hell and the Voidoids in 77. get what you mean particularly about passeneger - you say punk you have it - although i never thought any of them were punk! Firstly these lyrics are far too good and there are too many for all those 70s bands. Lastly i like your voice better! so there! I like this whatever

[pic]

That's some lyrics and that's some song and yes, it has a somewhat 70's punkish vibe but I think it feels current too and the words cut across time boundaries imo...really good!

[pic]

This is great.. is giving Talking Heads vibes. I could listen all day.

You had me at Richard Hell and the Voidoids and Iggy Pop. Show me an angel and I'll paint you one.... that's inspired. Wish I had wrote that line!

the opening made me think of ricky gardiner's riff upon which iggy pop placed his passenger, then when i read your liner notes i saw your appropriation of that riff that intentional. on the lyical end of it, i believe that "show me an angel and ill paint you one" could well have been Caravaggio's battle cry.
