Like Flowers Need Bees

Liner Notes

So we've had quite a hectic few weeks with our gorgeous 6 year old. Her emotions and behaviors have been becoming quite heightened and challenging, and the other day I cried in front of her (for the first time) after it all got a bit much. Amazingly she came to comfort me and demonstrated a breathing technique to help me, as we've done for her many times. It was a powerful moment.

We saw a specialist recently which has helped to better understand her sensory preferences/needs, so I'm positive about the road ahead.

And here's me unpacking all of that! Went down the rabbit hole on this one.

#Soul #Funk #Jazz ?

Lyrics

It’s raw and it’s real, These feelings we feel, Sometimes they won’t go away

Breathe deeply in, this time no-one wins, Let’s start again like a brand new day,

I could be your guide, and take it in my stride Hold my hand, I’ll show you the way,

Thread is wearing thin, where do I begin, seems like we’re both afraid

Just let it all out and I’ll do the same, No shadow of doubt, there’s nobody to blame So don’t fall into fear and shame

Wherever I turn, there’s lessons to learn, But now we’re running the red,

All systems go, time to put on a show, Let’s clear the tears that our hearts have shed,

The most sensitive of souls, easily gets stuck in holes, Hold my hand, let me lift you back up

We will make progress, help you to process, Clean up the mess from an overfilled cup,

Just let it all out and I’ll do the same, No shadow of doubt, there’s nobody to blame So don’t fall into fear and shame

We can be brave, to ride out this wave, Float out and see, calm and tranquility

We can be strong, find where we belong, Like flowers need bees, You can rely on me

Oh I've missed your funky offerings! Great to hear you again! And the subject matter of this song really resonates with me - both the parenting stuff and the discovering of sensory needs/preferences. I think I'm going to be singing this chorus to myself as a form of self-care! Also really love the line "the most sensitive of souls, easily gets stuck in holes" - so true!

Funk and harmonies, I am here for it! This is such a good production where all the elements are mixed just right. Love your vocals, love the chord progressions. Nice work!

This is such a clean production, everything transparent, everything perfectly placed, bright but never harsh. Love those moaning (synth?) woodwinds in the break and behind some of the vocals. A really beautiful melody, especially the long line floating down on "Just let it all out...". Such nice use of harmonies and vocal doubling, expert subtle harmony shifts from minor to major and even diminished (!). Listened twice and it was mellow and uplifting.

Lovely liner notes to read - sounds like she's been raised just right to comfort you like that. Some absolutely wonder guitar work in this track. Those acoustic flourishes are wonderful. The melody is so summery and breezy which is pulling out the eternal rainy greyness we've had in the Uk since.... oh I dunno, 2012 it feels like...

I saw that title and had to click. So lush and funky-smooth and nicely orchestrated. Second time around is just as nice as the first. Is that a pair of scissors in the rhythm section, or just an artful use of EQ? Regardless of the source, it's a nice touch in the 2nd half of the song.

This is such a great song! The music is so catchy and draws you right in, and then you realize that the words have something very deep and powerful to say. Wow! This line, "Just let it all out and I’ll do the same, No shadow of doubt, there’s nobody to blame So don’t fall into fear and shame" is simply amazing, and I might say amazing parenting. You have wrapped up your love and commitment to your daughter, as well as your own vulnerability during a challenging time, into a perfect package. What a gift - to her, to you, and to us!
