And now for something completely different! These lyrics were written two years ago after I read Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Fairies (hint: don't write one, they don't like it much). The story of the Bone Tree and the snow king was fascinating the way it was woven through the narrative and I wanted to be able to sing it in filk circles. I'm pretty pleased with this. I'm new to using my whisper voice, but it has the slightly sinister effect I wanted for the Fae in this song. Also, they had to have the last whisper.

Lyrics

ooooooo

Fisherman fisherman, why come you here? No mortal dares walk where the Tall Ones are near This country is our, now you owe us a boon We wish for more bones to hang under the moon

Fairy-maid, fairy-maid what shall I do? The Tall-Ones' songs whisper the day and night through They wish to release what is bound in the tree Oh whisper your wisdom, dear fairy-maid free ‌ Bring us the bones that you pull from the sea Those deep water monsters we’ll hang on the tree Weigh down the white tree until it does fall And the once-hidden king again reigns over all ‌ Here lie the bones of my long-murdered kin Dig them up quickly and then bury them 'Round the great roots of the bloodless bone tree And don’t you forget that you must marry me ‌ Bring us the bones that you pull from the sea Those deep water monsters we’ll hang on the tree Weigh down the white tree until it does fall And the once-hidden king again reigns over all ‌ Fisherman, fisherman, hang up the bones Weigh down the side where the tree starts to groan All manner of beasties you’ve pulled from the sea Now wait for your honour once our king is free ‌ ooooooo

The breaths of all hushed in the gathering gloom The bones clattered creepily under the moon But the tree did not lean or crack under the weight And the once-hidden king was condemned to his fate ‌ For 'round the great roots of the Bloodless Bone Tree The bones of her kin held on fast, steadily They’d not let the snow king again walk the world To freeze all the land and his icicles hurl ‌ Bring us the bones that you pull from the sea Those deep water monsters we’ll hang on the tree Weigh down the white tree until it does fall And the once-hidden king again reigns over all ‌ No matter which bones he should pull from the sea No deep water monster shall pull down the tree The white tree will stand, we’ll not let it fall And the once-hidden king will ne’er reign over all ‌ ooooooo

I love this! I wish I had more to say other than that but it is simply so!

Spooky lyrics and eerie voice. (I managed to avoid reusing creepy, yay!)

A song to remember that stealing babies was a main fairy leisure activity, and that fairy tales are not over until someone has died or lost their soul!

I'll have to get the book, if only for this one story.

Hooray for synonyms!!! The book is a fun read, but you have opinions about fairies you might yell at it a bit. Or a lot.

I love fairy tales and also their deconstructions or modern takes, so I took a look at the encyclopedia sometime last year.

I do not remember why I left it on the shelf at the time, but your retelling of The Bone Tree really worked for me, and now I want the source.

As for the yelling, that wouldn't be the first time... But that one story, I really want!

I totally understand this! I love retellings too. I just didn't want you to be taken by surprise.

Beautiful intro. Love, love your strumming and the lyrics and your voice are so accentuated... in the best possible way.

It sounds like you're sitting on a fairy hill in the moonlight... in the mist, with the fairy folk at your feet!

Yes, the lyrics are a bit eerie, but I really like that!

Your voice is magnificent, as always!

Well this is delightfully creepy. That "Bring us the bones that you pull from the sea" stanza in particular IS really epic! The whisper voice works really, really well for this, too.

Delightfully creepy was the goal! Hurrah!

Oh I like this creepy tale full of fantastical (and quite grisly) details. "Bring us the bones you pull from the sea" is EPIC. Really enjoy the simplicity of the performance, the big reverb adds such a spooky sung-from-a-cave-on-a-mist-shrouded-moor vibe to it. Excellent stuff.
