Rusting Orange

by @mace66

Liner Notes

So, the inspiration for this song is the British weather (I know I'm being a cliche)

In the UK it has rained every day since the 1st January - which, as of yesterday was 40 days.

Credit goes to @tamsnumber4 for suggesting the rhymes with the word 'Orange'

For those interested in the recording process -

The track was recorded using Cubase Elements. The bass is a Squier PJ bass which I swapped out the original pickups for a set of EMG active ones. I used the Cubase amp simulator to add a bit of distortion.

The two guitar parts are played on an Epiphone SG utilising the Cubase Amp simulator, onboard flanger and phaser..

The drums are from the Cubase sound library and played real-time from a keyboard controller.

Horn sound is from the Cubase HaLion library.

The cowbell is a real cowbell recorded with a SE Electronics SE2200A condenser mic. Vocals are also recorded using the SE mic.

No AI was used.

Lyrics

For 40 days and 40 nights, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) I'm rusting orange, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) Just like a door hinge, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) For 40 days and 40 nights, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) I'm rusting orange, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) Enough to make a man cringe. (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) For 40 days and 40 nights, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) I'm getting wetter, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) It ain't no better. (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) For 40 days and 40 nights, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) I'm rusting orange, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) I'm rusting orange... (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...)

Those stormy clouds have opened up on me, There's no blue sky for as far as I can see, This ain't no time for a walk in the park, It's too darn wet and it's oh so dark, Well... I hope you're happy, I hope you're happy, I hope you're happy Rain...

For 40 days and 40 nights, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) I'm rusting orange, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) Just like a door hinge, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) For 40 days and 40 nights, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) I'm rusting orange, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) Enough to make a man cringe. (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) For 40 days and 40 nights, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) I'm getting wetter, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) It ain't no better. (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) For 40 days and 40 nights, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) I'm rusting orange, (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...) I'm rusting orange... (Rain, rain, rain, rain, rain...)

That ice cold rain is getting into my bones, You don't pick up when I call on the phone, That lighting strike goes right through to the heart, That pouring rain is washing me apart, Well, I hope you're happy, I hope you're happy, I hope you're happy, Rain!

Rain, rain, rain, rain, Rain, rain, rain, rain, Rain, rain, rain, rain, Rain, rain, rain, rain, Rain, rain, rain, rain, Rain, rain, rain, rain, Rain, rain, rain, rain, Rain, rain, rain, rain, Rain...

This is full-on 80s revisited party jump-around. The cutting lead guitar has a David Bowie Heroes industrial jangle and the vocals have very much a David Byrne energy. Great sound... ah, takes me back.

This sounds like a party song, a good-time, get-down celebration of the rain. Yeah!! I live in Portland OR, which has a similar climate. But lately it's been alarmingly sunny and pleasant. Put the kettle on and keep making music until things change. I love the "I hope you're happy" refrain. Love the whole thing, actually

even though this is a dreary subject - unending rain - it has an 80's club feel, with a healthy side of the Heads. I like the counterpoint horns coming in.

Great song - I love the arrangement and production, it manages to evoke the best of post punk grooves without actually sounding like any of the bands, which is a really clever trick!

You keep doing this stuff that's so much like everything I love from the 80s. I WISH I could come up with stuff like this!!

Awesome energy! Good groove. Irresistible cowbell. The guitar sounds cool. Reminds me of Talking Heads at their funkiest.

I love that bass! Cool line, cool tone. Cool production overall, really. And the vocal melodies are very catchy! I must echo that rhyming orange with door hinge is a really fun touch.

wow, this is tremendous! love that whole production going on- its like a wild party in the rain! and of course your rhyming the supposedly unrhymable word 'orange' is bonus. great fun and a timely comment on the British weather.
