Liner Notes
this 4-track cassette collaboration was born during the 50/90 challenge in 2024, went missing, was rescued for FAWM 2025, and died an untimely death, dismembered at the hands of US postal service processing equipment.
all i (burr) ever received was the shipping label and apology letter below...
as luck would have it — mr. jim made digital backups of the stems before he shipped it across the pond to me. so i downloaded files for tracks 1-3 to see what i could make of it. there was no click track.
- @beto - synth drone [tape]
- @harryklippton - synth drone [tape]
- @jimdgreen - guitar drone [tape]
- @burr - modular synth bleeps, drum programming [DAW]
given that the soul of the tape had been resurrected as a neurosim construct, i opted to stay in the digital realm. i used logic pro's tempo mapper to try and sync with the existing drones, used that to trigger a glitchy "metronome" with my modular synth, and then sequenced some analog drum samples. i also chopped up the bagpipe-like track 2 as a "lead" of sorts. the tempo mapping is imperfect and slips occasionally, which, i think, is part of the charm...

A super cool glitchy synth track here and so happy it’s been brought back to life well done @jimdgreen for making that backup!
There’s something really magical about the way it’s greater than the sum of its parts, especially knowing the whole tape saga behind it. I love that slightly imperfect tempo mapping too, the little slips just add to the charm and give it that woozy, otherworldly wobble.
It genuinely feels like a call from beyond, half lost art piece, half alien transmission. And that bagpipe like lead floating over the drones is such a great touch. Weird in the best possible way!
The lyrics 😆 I did not understand much of the description but it sounds like an epic reconstruction, and it did end up being bleepy and bloopy and yet singy and songy. I’d listen to more like this!
bit late to listening to this, but WOW.
I was actually quite worried how this would turn out but the magician @burr waved his wand, sprinkled his magic and gave us something greater than the sum of it parts.
fun fact, my bit is actually not a synth . . . but guitar though a Helix Stomp and a random "amdent" preset downloaded of the web.
Also lesson learnt, when backing up the tape - back-up the click track as well!
Yep, definitely feels like a call from beyond. It's free from all constraints, which is ironic. Also, who's playing the alien bagpipe?
Glad this track lived to see a new day. I gotta tell ya…it’s got a weird vibe to it that requires more than one listen. Pants kickin’ all around.
Nice weird synth track. Love the wobble of it, and that it survived despite USPS doing their best to destroy it.
Who knows, maybe a postal worker stole the tape and added their own fourth track! I like how kinda eerie this feels, being a once lost art piece, found again and brought back to life by the machine it tried to fight in the first place.
I love the thought that this tape has a secret doppelgänger out there in some retrophile postal worker’s basement studio...
This is so above my pay grade 😀 I love this and don't know what's happening in my mind. Something is happening. I love the story behind it too and what came of it is amazing.
Granted I'm only on year two of participating in this 4-track cassette tape challenge, but this might be my favorite collaboration of this type that I've heard yet. First off, it sounds great in its own right; it moves, grooves, and has emotional impact (I particularly like the bagpipe sound). Second, it's even better because it's about as far from what my expectation of a 4-track collab is as you can get. So it's mind-expanding/eye-opening. Finally, this tape has to have the best adventure story of any tape that has actually survived its journey. It's a grizzled warrior back from the front lines.
Wow, what a story. I'm glad the music survived, and in the end thrived!
What a vibe this thing has, which makes sense with how much it went through! JimGreen saves the day. Techno head bobbing for sure. The drums give it a real push but all the sounds are solid and glitchy wonderfullness. Nice work folks! So glad this one lived on.
Nice textures to the synth drones, a great bed for the bopping rhythms. Not only is this an interesting listen, the visuals and ideas of the title and lyrics are complementary works of art. And what a backstory. Excellent use of friction and foraging in bringing this to completion.
In my mind you're in a copaganda TV show lab, looking at the bits and pieces and fragments of tape and some suit yells out, "ENHANCE!" behind you and you push one button and magically the pixels come into focus. This is a ride and groove, even without the backstory. How cool that this came to be.
Love the lyrics! Cool little atmosphere going on here. Sucks you in. Intriguing sounds.
Love the glitchy drums, I can really feel the story in the sound! Great job rescuing this one!
This is so fvcking cool!
What a story, showing the lengths that someone will go to, to drag a song into this world. The effort was totally worth it. The sometimes fragile sound just reflects the difficulties of making the song happen. Really 🆒
Really cool. I like all the imperfections a lot, keeps it interesting.
@burr you made magic with this. I'm eternally grateful to @beto and @jimdgreen for your contributions here too. This came out so cool
Holy guacamole. This turned out incredible. @burr you mixed a tape last year where the clock got recorded over and somehow managed to do drums on that one, too. Pretty amazing stuff!
My favorite thing about this challenge is how every mistake/accident/setback only seems to squeeze more awesome sauce out of the final product. Well done, everyone!
i remember that tape! i think you started it? that time, logic didn’t have a prayer of figuring the tempo out, so i just played live drums and IIRC got something usable in 1-2 takes, which was an unlikely blessing! 😅
Great story - this just had to come to life somehow - that drone noise is is my head and will be for............ Worth the wait for sure, Could you please send me a copy so i can open it in about 5 years time after it has toured the world ha ha
Bad. Ass.
This. Is. AWESOME!!!!! I'm so glad that you came back to it even with it being abruptly halted TWICE. Great job to all of you!
Well that's a wild tale and a cool tune! Well done!
Nice you were able to save something after everyone's effort. I was listening for something that sounded somehow like it came from a 4 track. What I thought sounded most like that...the drums...then I read the story. Ha!
This is so cool! It sounds like the ghost of the tape... or maybe the sound is garbled because of all the cassette tape went through? This turned out fantastic, one of the synths sounds like a bagpipe, the drums are solid, and I have no idea or recollection of what part I played on this.
Long live kombucha!
Cool, trancey, like the bagpipe like sounds. Makes me dizzy, in good way
