Liner Notes

Due to being sick I’ve fallen a bit behind and so this was just a fun lil’ #acousticonetake that came to mind as I pondered what to write for the first Weekly Challenge while also wanting to contribute to #fuc, and the inspiration was already in my hands!

I’m a huge language nerd, so if you didn’t actually know these references:

  • I’m playing a ukulele with a banjo head and resonator, so a “banjolele”.
  • The small salamander-like creature was an “ewt”, but people heard that as “a newt”.
  • The name for the small red stone fruit is “cherise” but that was understood to be plural “cherries” and that made the singular form “cherry”.
  • After extensive adoption of the Sanskrit game of chess circa 700CE, the term shāh māt became used for the game-ending move, now generally translated from Persian as “the king is defeated” or perhaps “the king cannot respond”, misheard by English speakers as “checkmate”.
  • The word for ideas that propagate and rapidly evolve is from the Greek mimēma, a word which has itself become a meme.

Lyrics

What qualifies as made-up And does a wombo count (That means a word combo, which you prob’ly figured out) Does it have to be nonsensical, or make the meaning clear? I’ll think as I play on my banjolele For you all to hear

Think of all the new things That someone just misheard You might know that “newt” or “cherry” Wasn’t the real word Same with shouting “checkmate” in a game of chess All these words are with us now Cause language is a mess

Dictionaries aren’t prescriptive Add a few more words All you need is lots of folks Repeating what they heard It’s an evolution That’s much faster then our genes Contribute to our culture and create a bunch of memes

This is fantastic, so fun, informative, and clever! I was definitely feeling the They Might Be Giants vibe here, and I enjoyed every second. I didn't want it to end!

I've not heard of a banjolele so that is new to me. This song made me smile. Well done!

For being sick with the crud for much of fawm, you seem to be killin' it. This was so clever, Caroline. Perfect example: 🎶I’ll think as I play on my banjolele🎶

@vivian

Okay this was delightful!

I love this take on the prompt so much, and the explanations of the etymology of the words you reference! "Dictionaries aren't prescriptive" made me want to cheer :D

So fun! I love the etymology lessons!

As a long-time fan of They Might Be Giants (and Barenaked Ladies, who have done similar things), I love a little lesson in a song! Glad you liked it 😊
