If I Were

Liner Notes

This one came to me while listening to https://fawm.org/songs/321734. In fact, I had to keep starting the song back up in order to keep writing - I think my browser is having some trouble with SoundCloud? But the point is, I literally couldn't be in the right frame of mind for these lyrics without that music playing.

I sort of almost have a melody because there was a soft sing-song that naturally came with the words as I was writing, but I'll have to come back to that. I wonder if there's a way to make it fit in better with the more hard-edged sounds I've been going for, since I'm trying to put together albums for release now.

Lyrics

If I were a flower I'd never leave your yard I was never picked For dodgeball or anything I never took it too hard Sometimes it's fine staying right where you are Never straying from being just you I may not have a fancy car Or a face you would take anywhere but the zoo but if I were a raindrop I'd fall from the sky The same as the other ones do The differences come when you're passing through life I don't know what you're going through but if I Were the music that played in the background You never would notice me too Except in my absence If I ever left you But that's not something I'm going to do That's not something I know how to do

Oh, this feels like a sweet cradling way of speaking to your (or my) child self. Settling into acceptance over a lifetime of quiet observing. Learning to be comfortable with being an outsider and an independent liver and thinker.
