Liner Notes

My first #randomcollaboration for FAWM! I was paired with @johnkaniecki, I supplied a title and then he wrote the lyrics and I wrote/played/sang the music.

This was really fun, and also very challenging — it took me several days to find a melody, and I really tried to figure out a way to stay true to all the lyrics, though I had to change the first line of the second verse slightly. I hope that was OK!

Inspired by the “Bob Dylan” line in the final verse, I recorded this without a click and played kind of loose with melody and instrumentation, treating it kind of like his style of a bunch of verses that sometimes seem only loosely strung together. I also kept it semi-acoustic but used the telecaster as the main rhythm, and an acoustic-electric DI bass.

Thank you John, and I hope you like it!

PS I was miserably sick all this past week and my voice hasn’t recovered, so this is quite a bit lower than I would otherwise like, but ah well, I can’t sing otherwise.

Lyrics

Hera got in a rage with the ageless Zeus She cried baby just maybe I’ll turn you loose The god of Olympus replied with lightning and thunder He cried Hera girl let me fill you with wonder

I was walking out the door And she cried just one more I said we’ve been here before She smiled just one more

Pocahontas’ story’s a sad lullaby By the Mississippi River we hear her cry She asks the whimsical question which is why Love songs are eternal they never die

I was walking out the door And she cried just one more I said we’ve been here before She smiled just one more

I gave you orange roses it was your favorite kind of flower We made love at midnight and talked into the early hours So why am I crying when I know that my sins are forgiven Why am I crying when God has taken you to heaven

And words of a song will never make it right Bob Dylan is perishing but you see him fight There are mysteries not meant to comprehend The truth is that all good things come to an end

I was walking out the door And she cried just one more I said we’ve been here before She smiled just one more

If I was Shakespeare I wouldn’t write a tragedy Simple human kindness is the world’s remedy When I say I love you know my words are pure If you desire my fire than yes just one more

I was walking out the door And she cried just one more I said we’ve been here before She smiled just one more

I really love this! The music and the lyrics fit perfectly! Great sound and flow. Love your vocal layers. The vignettes in the verses are fabulous, and a wonderful contrast to the chorus!

The lyrics are really good for something just prompted from a (presumably) randomly selected title - real engaging poetry in there - I have known your work (John) from muse songwriters but I have never kind of appreciated it until hearing it performed - rubber bandage does a great job with that guitar and the smooth harmonies - well done to both of you

Thanx. I appreciate your words. Glad you liked it.

A lovely, melodic track with unexpected lyrics and a cool guitar sound support fine harmonies.

Thank you!! I tried to get a little variation in with each verse and each repeat of the chorus, and the harmonies were a great way to play around with that ☺️

Oh wow, this is gorgeous, such beautiful imagery and the music supports the lyrics just right. Excellent collab!
