I Think (Therefore I Was)
by @philkmills
Liner Notes
I was writing a different song this morning when the last line of this one's chorus arrived from nowhere.
(I'm not exactly happy with the performance; my tongue was offended by some of the word choices or phrasing.)
Lyrics
I think about baseball; I was a kid A favourite summer thing I did Never learned the splitter, Couldn’t break a curve Faced with bouncing grounders, I lost my nerve But late at night, alone in the dark I bow on the mound to the roar of the park The bleacher fans all know my name And I beat the Yankees in a seventh game
Don’t tell me I’m mistaken. Don’t say I lie, because I remember everything. I think, therefore I was.
I think about reading, wet afternoons It’s like the local library in my room No way I’d go outside Mostly I’m content Quiet entertainment while time gets spent I turn one page, suddenly I stand Surrounded by a whole world of sand Another page, an elven glade With villains dead and a hero made
Don’t tell me I’m mistaken. Don’t say I lie, because I remember everything. I think, therefore I was.
I think about high school, I got good marks Solving math equations for a lark Friends weren’t so common Romance just a joke Scared of sounding foolish, I seldom spoke But while I drowse in our physics class I change to my suave self at last Which leaves important people awed: The football team and the cheerleading squad
Don’t tell me I’m mistaken. Don’t say I lie, because I remember everything. I think, therefore I was. I think, therefore I was.

I love this. Please add it to your "Sue likes it so maybe I'll do it at a house filk" list.
Apart from the great unexpected contortion in the chorus, I love the hopeful nostalgia in the lyrics Phil. And the sound of your guitar reminds me of just how much we lose when listening through high-compression algorithms in Zoom circles.
Great concept for the refrain. It’s the past, so it was. Now you are writing songs.
I really like that line I think therefore I was and the reflections are so descriptive. Really nice work
The wistful, nostalgic and subdued soundscape here works really well to elevate the narrative in the lyrics. I especially like this line, with its turn of the usual phrase: “ I think, therefore I was”. Beautiful performance!
