Lyrics

Chestnut wind blowing smoke like my old man Bittersweet November light Evergreens overgrowing the grandstand Big house gates chained up tight

Take a deep breath, this is just the season Turn the clock back, get an early night Are you looking for an invitation Is that right?

Chestnut wind blowing across the railway Lover's moon hides in the cloud Fires blazing between the jetties We're just numbers in the crowd

Just because your memories make you cry And the chestnut wind gets in your eye

Chestnut wind blows you back to autumn Chestnut wind won't tell you how Reach for a hand half-remembered Chestnut wind blows you back to now

Thanks for your comments on "Before and After." In this song, I like your use of a lot of specific images that help set the scene. The wind takes gets personified a bit, like in the "Chestnut wind won't tell you how", which makes it more that an aspect of weather. Well done!

I like this. It carries a lot of importance, if that makes sense? Like, just seems important somehow, on a musical level. 😀

This is like an urban equivalent for Gram Parson's "Hickory Wind". This has an early Strawbs or ISB feel. I like it a lot.

What a great listen! Reminds me of the folksy pop I listened to back in the sixties! Love the cajon! Nice harmony. Oh, and happy birthday :)

This is great, Jon. The lyrics are top class, and nice interplay between some classy guitar and the percussion. It's not a competition of course, but I can see I'll have to bring my A game next week!

Lyrics paint such a vivid picture with the sensory elements... I can smell the tobacco smoke and the cold wind, hear the trains. That autumn feeling both in the season of the year and season of life, when the catalogue of memories becomes so thick it's easy to get lost there. All the sensory elements bring it back to the present. Lovely groove with the drums... feels like a nice blend of easy-going optimism and melancholy nostalgia.

Very nostalgic feel throughout and love the hand half-remembered and many other images you sparked. The wind references and gentle drumming carried the song on a relaxed, even thread. Lovely. Nice to hear your songs again.

I really enjoy the cajon and the guitar sound is beautiful. the lyrics feel very autumny which fits the weather around here perfectly and makes this a great evening listen.
