Hold On Me

Lyrics
My baby’s got a hold on me My baby’s got a hold on me My baby’s got a hold on me My baby’s got a hold on me
I was climbing the Eiger Mountain Was 100 feet from the top Lost my grip, started to slip And screamed as I began to drop
My baby grabbed hold of me She was anchored, and right where she needed to be When I thought it was over She showed up like a four leaf clover And grabbed a hold of me…
My baby’s got a hold on me My baby’s got a hold on me My baby’s got a hold on me My baby’s got a hold on me
We were sailing ‘cross the Atlantic Ocean When a wave hit like Old Bones Brown I flipped overboard, my adrenaline soared Then started sinking down, down down down…
My baby grabbed hold of me She was anchored, and right where she needed to be When I thought it was over She showed up like a four leaf clover And grabbed a hold of me…
My baby’s got a hold on me My baby’s got a hold on me My baby’s got a hold on me My baby’s got a hold on me

So melodic, your guitar rhythm is flawless man, it pulls me in and carries me along instantly! Absolutely love the scream at the drop! Perfect. Such a sweet song, those lyrics feel super fun and the guitar soloing is on point. I find it really hard to know how to describe the pure joy this brings me! Really crisp recording by the way too, you really catch the tone of the guitar, do you record with a mic?
I record the guitar separately using, typically, two mics. I really don’t know what I am doing and am winging it. Some FAWMers get such a lush full sound when recording. I’m always envious and curious how they do it…One of these days. Thanks for listening and the comments. I always appreciate hearing what you have to say…
This one jumped right into unexpected territory as soon as that first verse landed and put a huge grin on my face. Beautifully delivered sweetness and that groove is sublime!
I think i could listen to you talk about any ol' thing on top of your amazing guitar'in. I love that falling guitar section after the 'then started sinking down down down..'! Admittedly while listening, i started to think your baby is some kind of well-made piton or anchor or climber's tool etc. The fact that I still don't know makes the song even more enjoyable. (the falling scream made me smile) Lots of fun, this! Let the gushing about your guitar playing commence!
My sweet lord - forgetting the fact that there's all the expected musicality/performance/guitar chops stardust sprinkled over this, that's just a garnish. At it's heart this is a wonderfully written song - music and words equally great. It is a complete package, and it is phenomenally well done. And since you were very kind about my singing on TBWTCOHS - if we can do a bit of a mutual love in - your vocal approach to this song is perfect - you sound great.
Soooooo smooth.. Rich - the depth of your guitar lines has always blown me away. This is a particularly wonderful piece. The vocal delivery is spot on, and the lyrics are oh so clever :) You've got a gem here!
Really fun song, more great guitar. I laughed out loud with that scream in the background after the Eiger drop. I really like how you recolor the chorus each time by changing the meaning of "anchor." I really enjoyed grooving to this one, nice job!
Hey Derek…Thanks for listening and commenting. I’m hoping you’ve got more to post. Loved your first song. Ready for more…
Great play on words using your hook. It's a fun song with a great rhythm. I always enjoy listening to you play!
So much fun. The whole idea is clever as heck and the execution is perfect. Wickedly catchy and proficient guitar work along with a vocal that couldn't fit better. This is what Roy Bookbinder wishes he sounded like.
World class guitar playing, such a natural effortless sounding vocal delivery, great story telling, beautiful tension between spoken and sung lines, funny literal interpretation of a love trope. The only thing I hate about this is it makes me feel like I need to practice guitar about 2 hours more a day. Bravo.
Yeeeees!! I love this. Beaut. guitar, fabulous vocal delivery, 4 leaf clover I love...
Well, wide grins all round on this one...not just because of the guitar bewitchery but for the overall jazzy goodtime feel the song conveys!
Hey, Rich I had listened to this a couple of nights ago, and didn't comment then but wanted to, so I am back listening again, and my feeling is the same second time around. I love your vocal delivery, and title hook! Guitar is really cool too and compliments the whole piece. Dig that ending. Good energy, man. Enjoyed listening. : )
Ah, this is a GREAT song - love your jazzy seventh chords and the way you double your meaning on "my baby's got a hold on me."
Great guitar as always. I like how the "hold on me" is literal rather than the usual figurative sense.
This is just awesome. Some many juicy chords, I'm sure you know the ones that grab me the most. Everything around "drop" is brilliant, the lift, the pacing, the movement. And of course, the scream in the background. 😂 All those dancing riffs that are perfectly composed, perfectly placed and perfectly played. Giving the guitar center stage to build the drama before she saves you is top notch writing.
You are wizard, man. I hope I can play like you when I grow up.
Fun lyrics and really solid guitar playing. Don't know why, but for some reason I got Tuck Andress vibes if you've ever listened to him?
Hadn’t heard of Tuck Andress but have now. That guy can play , holy smokes…I’m just trying to navigate the bunny hill…
Wonderful acoustic guitar performance, the way the chords and licks weave together feels really natural. The vocal delivery reminds me of early Tom Waits, that conversational storytelling tone really suits the song. I also love the lyrics, especially the way the repeated hook anchors all those vivid scenes like the Eiger climb and the Atlantic moment. It feels playful, visual, and heartfelt all at once.
This is a delight! So clever. Really enjoyed all the elements in this. Great guitar, playful vocal, fun lyric! Makes ya smile!
Tremendous guitar playing here (I would expect none less). I really like how you have a really simple structure here, but turned our expectations around. Would we all have a baby that has a hold on us!
Right from the off - loved this - the descending scale from drop is epic - what a lovely song. How do you get that super clean acoustic sound like you’re round a campfire - brilliant
Nice! Love the groove and rhythmic guitar playing. Imagery in the verses paints the pictures as the catchy hook has a hold on me. 🎶 So fun!
so sweet and just perfect! really love how intricate and expressive the guitar part is, really feels like it's telling the story along side you :)
This is so cool man. Clever lyrics, the story made me want to keep listening to find out what happened next. And the harmony is great, like Clapton in his acoustic era.
Oh Baby, this has a Sweet Jazzy Funky Groove going with your Snappy Geeetar playing. The Storytelling Vocal and Fun lyric Holds together Mighty Fine!
This is so groovy, you sound great!! I was bopping along the whole time. I especially like the song structure and your storytelling is wonderful
I just love your vocal delivery, and the guitar playing is really wonderful! Groovy chorus and the speaking parts have me smiling from ear to ear!
This is awesome, such a cool, smooth, bluesy delivery. Fun and groovy.
This reminded me of last week's Taipei free climb of that skyscraper. I remember thinking WHAT IS THIS WIFE THINKING WHILE HE'S DOING THIS AND SHE JUST COMES UP TO THE TOP VIA ELEVATOR SMILING AT THE END?!!!! Anyway, you've got another great one here. Very nicely performed! ❤️
Rich, I love your groovy guitar playing here. I have no idea what you're doing but it souns so delicate, bluesy and playful. That scream though....
Excellent guitar picking here. Really fun song.
Your guitar sounds so wonderful! And your voice is very effective. There are so many cool little details in the music and the writing. You’re bad ass
Super stuff. You're a very skilful guitarist, of course, but a word about your vocal, which I love, Great combination in the performance.
Love the reverse-metaphor here; using a familiar turn of phrase literally. Really fun play between the vocals and guitar - and the scream is so much fun.
So much joy in this. Such a light touch on the guitar. It keeps rhythm when it needs to and it embellishes when it needs to - adore that descending figure on "drop" at the end of the first verse. Catchy and very sweet. Nice work.
How fun is this?! It all flows so well - lyrics, guitar, rhythm and the catchiness of the vocal style.
i love that your guitar part is so much of the story telling. so good! love the last line! great Rich! utterly enjoyable listen!
I can't decide which I like better, the scream, or the "down, down, down." Great fun, Rich!
Hi Patty!!! A song or two is better than none. Look forward to checking them out.
Genuinely laughing out loud at that distant scream at the 30 second mark! Had to rewind it to make sure I wasn't imagining it!
Love those little guitar knocks and it sounds like you were having fun all the way through this one. Love to hear it!
She showed up like a four-leaf clover 🍀 What a fantastic lyric! Great playing, singing and vocals! I love this.
This is fantastic! Instant classic. The guitar playing is absolutely fabulous. The vocal has so much character ... notes of Randy Newman and Tom Waits. Those single-fret slides, hammer-ons (and offs) and sliding chord runs... beautiful. And the limerick-pattern rhyming in the verses is so spot on. It's the kind of song that feels like it's been around a long time. Congratulations for this one!
Someone blew the budget on that screaming mountaineer FX, but it was totally worth it! In most songs, ‘a hold on me’ would be exclusively metaphorical, so I love how you turn it round. The whole thing has a bit of Randy Newman vibe (which I, of course, love) but with an unmistakeable richaaaaay delivery and humour. The way you sing ‘drooooop’, ‘down down down’ and all the little grunts and ‘yeah baby’s during the mini solo are textbook you (and one of the many reasons why everyone loves you here). The guitar work at the end of each verse is also very uniquely you, splendid stuff. Finally, really digging the verse lyrics you’ve developed - the references to specifics (the Eiger, 100 feet, Old Bones Brown) really sharpen the song as a whole. Whooooooooo yeah, well done man.
You are killing it this Fawm Rich! Great to hear your offerings. This one hooks the listener in with the storytelling and the humour. It just sounds like you are having so much fun too. Yay! Fantastic guitar work, sounds effortless! Chorus is lovely and catchy too
so cool!
Groovy, a cute morning tune to go with a cup of coffee. I was a little uncertain about the beginning but it developed into a nice, catchy tune. Congrats!
Nice storytelling and love the guitar work.
Gorgeous guitar work, as usual. Love that vocal slide down on, "drop" and "down, down, down"! I like that you pair fear of falling with reassurance of being caught. What a lovely, loving song. Perfect for the month of February.
