Sunshine and Cthulhu

I was struggling to get off the ground this FAWM, and I had commented this morning on a tune by @owl and mused that the current situation with certain "frozen stormtroopers" being a part of daily reality made life feel like "sunshine and Cthulhu" (as opposed to sunshine and puppies!) I realized I had accidentally song-prompted myself with that...ruminated on it at work...and came home and banged this out. Not sure if it really works or not, but it's fun...hehe! I'm on the board and off to the races at least...

Lyrics
I woke up, the sun was shining The radio was bringing disturbing news A dreaded mythical beast had just awakened And was out on the loose
His tentacles took the form of would-be soldiers Snatching folks indiscriminately off the street As though the legend was coming to pass He was looking for souls to eat
His supine minions in the halls of power Spreading the horror of his word And I’m supposed to just go through life like normal It’s really bizarre and absurd
Guess it’s a beautiful day for our souls to be eaten It’s a beautiful day for our souls to be eaten It’s a beautiful day for our souls to be eaten alive…
The city folk looked on in horror The skies began to snow and sleet House doors broken down and car windows smashed Empty running vehicles left in the street
The people started to join together A movement began to coalesce Neighbors helping neighbors resist his evil And raising the cry of distress
The dread beast’s acolytes were angry Releasing a litany of threats But that just made the people more determined To put the evil one’s nonsense to rest
Guess it’s a beautiful day for our souls to be eaten It’s a beautiful day for our souls to be eaten It’s a beautiful day for our souls to be eaten alive…
The monster just wants everyone to surrender And give in to his eternal gloom But the price of freedom is vigilance If you want to keep your soul off the dread one’s menu…
Guess it’s a beautiful day for our souls to be eaten It’s a beautiful day for our souls to be eaten It’s a beautiful day for our souls to be eaten alive…
Is it a beautiful day for our souls to be eaten? Do we really want our souls to be eaten? I’m not a fan of anyone’s souls being eaten alive

Don’t get eaten!

Got done with listening just now and outwardly said, "damn, I wish I could listen to this song everywhere I go" (my dog is my witness)... Then I saw that it's downloadable, and I am waiting for the moment when I can blast this in my car, can't drive now, wine has my soul, but when I am hungover in the morning, the McDonald's line won't know what hit them when it's blasting out of my car! Some of my favorite lines: "His tentacles took the form of would-be soldiers Snatching folks indiscriminately off the street." "His supine minions in the halls of power Spreading the horror of his word." and of course "It's a beautiful day for our souls to be eaten." Okay, done fawning over you now!
Poor McDonalds line...hahaha! Thanks for listening and welcome again to FAWM!!! Was great meeting you virtually in the chat last night!
That first organ just slid right in and the first chords punched me in the face and I shit my pants. Great opening, man!
Love the lyrics, "It’s a beautiful day for our souls to be eaten" is a killer hook, love the groove. Lead guitar fits beautifully. Great mixing to get all of these competing timbres playing together nicely. This is one of my favorite tunes of FAWM 2026 so far, well done!
Don't get eaten, sir. Words to live by.
So kick ass! Fun and catchy, foot tappin' along until you realize what you're tapping to. Then you just keep tapping anyway. This rocks!
Damn son! Another total friggin banger! Thanks I hate it! LOL ICEOUT
I didn't think it was possible for something to be so fun and so utterly not fun at the same time, but here we are 😂 I love pretty much every element here, but to briefly list my favourites: Killer guitar tones (with some very tasty connecting licks), the whole chorus (the whole of it, it's laugh out loud funny and doesn't get tired on repeats), those toms in the bridge, and the amazingness of that solo playing. In fact, it's such a bop that there's a danger you risk losing sight of the political commentary bit - almost like you've made something too good. Congrats man!
Yes, coming out rockin'. This is fun. I like that half-time pre-chorus. I like the tom groove on the bridge. I love the humor. I laughed that first time the chorus came around. I like this a lot: But the price of freedom is vigilance If you want to keep your soul off the dread one’s menu. 🤘
And I’m supposed to just go through life like normal
How I feel every day planning for Q2 when WW3 is at our door.
So good, Todd! There's so much to unpack too, but that bassline is special to me. Lovely!
What a jam Todd! And an apt-albeit-satirical reflection on the current events of the day. Your awesome multi-instrumental skills are on full display here.
Excellent in every way. And catchy. Love this!
what a blast! catchy, punchy, funny, tragic. love the energy, from the fantastic playing and sound to the loaded rhythmic lyrics that you got your tongue round so well! great stuff Todd!
Rock on, you B3nut. Sad but sad and danceable. It’s a pleasure to hear your Hammond playing.
I think this is one of favorite FAWM tunes so far - romping, topical, tongue in cheek, with a sweet solo, and (probably) the good guys win. Well done
And THERE it is.... swooping right in from the start. Wonderful groove and super fun. I mean other than the terrifying monster and all. But seriously, it's almost as if Huey Lewis decided to go horror, haha. Wonderful instrumentation, playing, singing and mixing. Top to bottom this is a stunner! Wow! Loved it (I just built my Nötadümble last night, haha)
This rips right at ya from the get go! Love the energy. Lol the joyfulness of the chorus is so perfect. So well done!
Oh man, I loved this from the very first second. Your bass part really moves - I love it. The lyrics are comedically joyful and well-delivered and that chorus is like...I want to dive into a pool of it. The guitar solo is a blast. Everybody needs a little B3 in their lives and you fill the prescription. And that final, "Don't get eaten" is perfect. I wish I could approach this level of quality in my own recordings. Really fantastic job!
YES!!! Love the use of organ. This is proper rock. Massively hooky chorus. The arrangement and production are phenomenal. It’s great to have a song that has an element of hope about the current climate. The bridge is awesome. Getting Bryan Adams Reckless from it (one of my fav albums ever)
Found myself singing along to your chorus! WOW, my jaw is on the floor!
Everybody join in. The Tentacle Rock. It goes like this: Put your arm in, put your other arm in, put your other arm in, put your other ... What a great romp.
i like this more than springsteens song. it is both angry and fun. the boss lacks the sense of irony that lifts your song above simple disgust. the music reminds me of blood sweat and tears before david clayton thomas joined the band. also a touch of chicago. whatever happened to the horn bands? i love the way you kick things off with a blast of the organ....and also fade out with it at the end.
I totally understand where you're coming from. And quite boldly I'll let it be known, I will not be eaten. Maaan, this arrangement reminds me that I have a long ways to go. That's not a bad thing. It's quite good. I've taken out my note pad and started jotting down things you've got working in this little number. One of which is that I must learn how to program drums...better than I do. And I love your guitar tones and how you have them arranged...which I must learn to do better at. So - you've taught me a great deal before 7:00 AM in the morning. Sheesh...it feels like HS all over again. Peace!
This is fire! Way to start the month – anthemic chorus, pure rock energy, all around great instrumentation and lyrics on point! "And I’m supposed to just go through life like normal, it’s really bizarre and absurd" – you described all the madness perfectly. Of course, your signature B3 playing is the icing on the cake, but personally I gotta say the bass stands out for me.
You just wrote a rock epic. I love the energy in this song though the lyrics are bitter
Rocking from the start! What an earful of music, all the elements come together so well.
Wow! What a drive this has. It was the title that brought me in and the crazy good vocals and complex orchestration supporting a strong message. And then the guitar solo charged in! Love the chorus. Amazing.
This absolutely rips! What a strong rocker. Love the lyrics! Great tune! And of course the B3 is stupendous.
What an earworm this is! Reminds me of Weird Al for some reason even though I know it's not a parody. Nice work and the organ, as always, kills.
wow, and more wow! this is fantastic- first of all, I love how each instrument is really on fire and somehow it all works together so well. And its got that 1974 Rock feel so well! Of course, the lyric is a killer (no pun intended, or intended only a bit) and it describes this whole mess so well.
The tempo is fast for the lyric, which i think gives this added punch, too. by the way, i still dont know how to pronounce that CThu.. thingy! If you'e gonna release it on bandcamp or something (you should) get lots more background vocals for the chorus.. it needs that big gang of vocals there i think?
fantastic job, what a great listen!
Wow, although the topic is hilariously/sadly current it feels like part of the soundtrack to my youth. Love the Hammond!
