Eat, Sleep & Dig (The Groundhog's Life)

Liner Notes
#groundhog #folk #acoustic #guywithguitar I'm a bit surprised that there wasn't a skirmish on this topic, since Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow today. Maybe a good thing since four of the next six weeks are FAWM-time, not sunbathing weather! Told from the standpoint of a groundhog who eats, sleeps & digs, and is mystified by all the attention.

Groundhog Day © 2026 raspberry33
Verse 1: So, they say, today’s a special day for a woodchuck or whistle pig I know you didn’t ask but there’s one task for me - beyond eat, sleep and dig I’ve been chillin’ since early fall In my three-bedroom den with a bath But is that light I see at the door Let’s look around and then do some math
[Chorus] I’m a groundhog (hey groundhog) I’ve been hibernating since September I’m a groundhog (woodchuck’s fine) I’ve got things to do remember? Eat, sleep and dig Eat, sleep and dig And once a year, look for my shadow.
Verse 2: It’s been gloomy now for months, but I think I see some light finding its way into my burrow Shall I look for food outside, maybe find myself a bride to raise another brood of trouble Is there danger if I leave my den Or just a news crew with some cameramen Who seem overly obsessed with shadows and light
(Chorus)
(Bridge) Now let’s suppose, how it goes, is my shadow will be black and white Then it’s back to sleep, I don’t mean to be impolite But there won’t be Spring for six more weeks…. And I’d prefer to sleep than starve.
(instrumental)
Verse 3: Well, the men in top hats wearing black coats - have all gone away After they say, another cloudy day could bring us early Spring and take away cold misery The days are all the same to me Eat sleep and digging constantly I don’t know what is so special About February the second
CHORUS
Outro: Eat, sleep and dig Hey, hey, hey Every day is groundhog day They’re all the same to me From February to September!

A groundhog is a whistle pig? Who knew? Beautiful song. Love when the bit of organ comes thru. "Eat sleep and dig' good hook....and "prefer to sleep than starve", nice nod to the biological reality of being a groundhog.
I really love how clever and fun this song is! A fabulous personification of the ground hog! This would be such a great children’s book or video! I love your gentle and upbeat vocals! Great chorus!
Thanks, Liz! This one's for the grandkids. I'm putting a CD together for them. They're too young to stream, but old enough to work a CD player!
This is delightful! I love the organ solo. "find myself a bride to raise another brood of trouble" is a great line too.
There's something very appealing about the relaxed, almost loping, treatment you've given this. It's appropriately pastoral. And I liked your singing as the groundhog. He seems like a nice guy, if a bit mystified by the ways of mankind (rightly so). Nice work.
Capturing the Groundhog's Day vibes very well within the lyrics. Maybe the groundhog enjoys eating sleeping and digging, who knows! I love the rotary organ accompaniment and the head-nodding drive of the song.
Love it!! Eat , sleep, dig, put up with bullshit every single day no matter if it’s rain or shine.. I’ve got two more years., then I’m probably going to stop digging and just stay in my $&@&ing hole. 😁
you are very believable as a groundhog. and my world has become a little bit bigger by understanding yours a little better.
I love it! Eat sleep and dig!
I love a good nature song. What a wonderful point of view! If groundhogs could sing and play music, I think this would their anthem.
